BobAliceInATree··on Nike exits the S&P 100 after 18 years and a $200B market-cap wipeout
Allbirds didn't really "pivot" into an AI datacenter. They sold off their shoe business at firesale to another company, which will still make & sell the shoes.

Then the name and public listing remaining was basically a shell, and basically SPACed into the AI datacenter company with more funding.

BobAliceInATree··on Matt Mullenweg tells Automattic staff in Slack he's back in control after ouster
Changing jobs can be rough or maybe even impossible in this job market. I'm sure there are many there that are not aligned with Matt, but just need the steady paycheck. Same was true after Elon took over twitter.
BobAliceInATree··on Nitter and XCancel receive cease and desist notices
> Firefighters who deal with forest fires, police, governments, rescue services (here in Spain) are all posting their updates on X - because, like the users, they have no choice, because no alternative exists.

Government agencies have communicated to their citizens long before twitter has existed. There's a myriad of ways they can use today: websites (with or without RSS), email newsletters, text updates, other social networks (bluesky, threads, etc).

Choosing to give critical updates only on Twitter is definitely a choice and they are deliberately ignoring a very large segment of their population that doesn't have a twitter account.

BobAliceInATree··on Premier league bans gambling sponsors
Norway banned alcohol advertisements in 1975. Companies similarly tried to get around by advertising by using water bottles, or merchandise, so they the law was amended in 1997 to ban those, which seems to have been successful.
BobAliceInATree··on A backdoor in a LinkedIn job offer
> I reported the repo to GitHub and the recruiter to LinkedIn. So far nothing has changed and the code is still up.

Oh, Microsoft.

BobAliceInATree··on EU fines Temu €200M for allowing sale of illegal products
This is why we have UL listings in USA and Canada. So you don’t have to rely on “common sense” which is notoriously unreliable.
BobAliceInATree··on Bricks and Minifigs Stole a Man's $200k Lego Collection
The problem with consignment is that the consignor wants the maximum price but the consignee wants a quick sale because 10% of a few bucks more means very little and they have to hold the inventory.
BobAliceInATree··on Microsoft open-sources “the earliest DOS source code discovered to date”
Stanford had shares in Google because they had the rights to the PageRank algorithm.

They sold their shares in 2005

BobAliceInATree··on Greek Alphabet Cards
No it's not. It's about teaching letter forms to kids.
BobAliceInATree··on America will come to regret its war on taxes
Your not speaking on behalf of the majority if Americans.
BobAliceInATree··on SpaceX Is Basically a Huge Meme Stock
There's a reason why he's trying to reserve 30% of the IPO for retail investors.

BobAliceInATree··on EFF is leaving X
Elon, the guy that will ban anyone on X at the drop of a hat, opposes censorship?

Comical.

> It would be wise to use all of the information channels available to reach as many people as possible.

How about their website, which is accessible to everyone because it doesn't require you to log in?

BobAliceInATree··on How far back in time can you understand English?
Interestingly I found the long s annoying and I had to think every time I saw it, but I quickly got used to and could read it naturally after a few paragraphs.
BobAliceInATree··on Fix the iOS keyboard before the timer hits zero or I'm switching back to Android
I tested this, and if I have slide-to-type disabled, and slide my fingers, then every letter I slide over will highlight, but only the letter I let my finger up on will show up in the text input box.

If I don't have slide-to-type enabled, then only the letter I press down on will highlight, and what shows up in the text input box is pretty inconsistent for horizontally adjacent letters.

BobAliceInATree··on ai;dr
> I'm having a hard time articulating this but AI-generated code feels like progress and efficiency, while AI-generated articles and posts feel low-effort and make the dead internet theory harder to dismiss.

I think it's the size of the audience that the AI-generated content is for, is what makes the difference. AI code is generally for a small team (often one person), and AI prose for one person (email) or a team (internal doc) is often fine as it's hopefully intentional and tailored. But what's even the point for AI content (prose or code) for a wide audience? If you can just give me the prompt and I can generate it myself, there's no value there.

BobAliceInATree··on Are Apple gift cards safe to redeem?
Shutterfly will also continually spam you despite clicking the unsubscribe button multiple times.
BobAliceInATree··on Dollar-stores overcharge customers while promising low prices
The problem is that they drive out local grocery stores that were actually pretty good, have terrible safety records, and food sanitation.

Last Week Tonight did an episode on them: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4QGOHahiVM

BobAliceInATree··on Frank Gehry has died
I toured that building when I was looking for a place, and just so happened to be there when there was recess or something. The loud noise of kids was definitely a significant factor in me not signing a lease.
BobAliceInATree··on What will enter the public domain in 2026?
Yeah, this sounds very similar to people who vote as if they're temporarily embarrassed billionaires. "There's a minuscule chance my work will become super lucrative for decades, so I want a super long copyright" when they don't realize that a much shorter copyright can help them creatively in the near term.
BobAliceInATree··on I have recordings proving Coinbase knew about breach months before disclosure
I don't know if he wrote it via AI, but he repeats himself over and over again. It could have been 1/3 the length and still conveyed the same amount of information.
BobAliceInATree··on iPhone Pocket
For those surprised by the cost, this is an Issey Miyake product, and the price is in-line with that. It's no different than the $800+ Hermes leather Apple Watch straps.
BobAliceInATree··on Avoid 2:00 and 3:00 am cron jobs (2013)
Thats only because it’s so hot in Arizona they want to sun to set earlier so it’s cooler in summer evenings.
BobAliceInATree··on A competitor crippled a $23.5M bootcamp by becoming a Reddit moderator

BobAliceInATree··on Chess.com regional pricing: A case study
That's still not a scam. They tell you what you're paying for. If you don't like it, then go somewhere else. There's no deception going on.
BobAliceInATree··on I’ve removed Disqus. It was making my blog worse
You're using an free tier supported by ads, what would you expect?

Either pay the money they ask if it's worth having comments, or build your own system.

BobAliceInATree··on Denmark close to wiping out cancer-causing HPV strains after vaccine roll-out
as far as I can tell, pharmacists cannot give vaccines off-label (this is an issue for the new covid guidelines and some states fell back to an Rx if no longer eligible for the covid booster).

Your PCP may give a vaccine off-label though, which is how I got my Shingrix, though I had to pay out of pocket.
