BlueTemplar··on Steam Machine
There is more than a single kind of Steam DRM (before even mentioning all the 3rd parties they allow) :

BlueTemplar··on Steam Machine
You mean compared to the PS3, one of the strong points of which was also having a Blu-Ray drive ?
BlueTemplar··on Steam Machine
Didn't Gabe Newell basically confirm 13 years ago already that they were aiming for that ?

BlueTemplar··on Social Cooling (2017)
We're talking about unsolved philosophical issues here, matters of barely stable equilibriums.

Would you rather be «team Plato», ruled by enlightened 'philosopher-kings' ? Comes with its own set of issues.

P.S.: Also, it's probably only a real paradox if you conflate the levels of application : what is really problematic is the systems that result in increased intolerance.

BlueTemplar··on Social Cooling (2017)
It's probably better to just stop using social media. (And stop tolerating people that do.)

I doubt that even something as 'light' on that spectrum as Hacker News is worthwhile enough compared to the non-social-media alternatives. (As a reminder, you can have a tree-like discussion structure without an upvote system.)

BlueTemplar··on Social Cooling (2017)
If you have a better solution to the paradox of tolerance, I'm all ears.

(People still using platforms : the likes of Facebook, Discord, LinkedIn, Github, or ChatGPT being amongst the ones that undermine democratic ideals and that ought to be socially shamed, and, in some cases, beaten up.)

BlueTemplar··on A Thermometer for Measuring Quantumness
Well, I already knew that I didn't understand quantum mechanics, but I didn't expect entanglement to violate transitivity !
BlueTemplar··on Circular Financing: Does Nvidia's $110B Bet Echo the Telecom Bubble?
We did get more : the return of VR couldn't have been possible without drastically improved hardware.

But the way how it stayed niche shows how it's not just about new gameplay experiences.

Compare with the success of the Wii Sports and Wii Fit, which I would guess managed it better, though through a different kind of hardware that you are thinking about ?

And I kind of expect the next Nintendo console to have a popular AR glasses option, which also would only have been made possible thanks to improving hardware (of both kinds).

BlueTemplar··on I spent the day teaching seniors how to use an iPhone
The important bit that you left out is "with how much effort ?"

Both too weak and too strong shouldn't be the default.

BlueTemplar··on I spent the day teaching seniors how to use an iPhone
Online banking can do 2FA through texts, which is probably the least bad option these days.
BlueTemplar··on I spent the day teaching seniors how to use an iPhone
I assume you mean a password that can be saved in the browser ?

Still, blame the bank, this is an issue they should have fixed even before smartphones became popular.

"Spectrum", by definition, covers all the range of behaviours, both those that society deems to be a disorder and those that it deems not.

The difference in the comments here and in this other thread are interesting :

BlueTemplar··on They Thought They Were Free (1955)
> Tellingly, purges of Jews continued even after the war in the Soviet sphere of influence.

How much of that was specifically because of Stalin ? (Noticeable changes after his death ?)

BlueTemplar··on They Thought They Were Free (1955)
Which foreign country is going to invade one third of USA ?

(Never mind, Trump never cared about little details like these...)

BlueTemplar··on They Thought They Were Free (1955)
Funnily, the original (regulated and temporary!) job description of 'dictator' does seem to fit quite well.
BlueTemplar··on They Thought They Were Free (1955)
Preach !

The political quadrant is more important than ever compared to the mess of one-dimensional politics :

Right wing is economic (neo) liberals, while fascists are top wing center : these will (like a century ago) gladly use left-wing policies and rhetoric if they bring them the power they crave above all else. Or ally with corporations when convenient.

While societal liberals are on the bottom wing, and regularly clash with anti-liberal socialists/communists (left center, but also left top).

(Proto-Antifa used to ally with Nazis to beat up Social Democrats, until Stalin had decided to change direction, it's wild how both the name and flag are still reused today despite that dirty history...)

BlueTemplar··on Internet Archive's big battle with music publishers ends in settlement
Not only it's 2025, so anyone still using YouTube(/Google/Alphabet) to make money is complicit with totalitarian extremists,

but this ContentID nonsense has been going on since at least 2009,

and we have had easy alternatives like PeerTube for several years now,

where they would have to actually go after him directly,

(and depending on jurisdiction, DMCA (screw that totalitarian extremist nonsense BTW) is more or less enforced),

rather than having YouTube do their censorship for them.

Pretty sure that the main reason Flattr (whether 1.0 or 2.0) failed, was because it wasn't backed by the Silicon Valley ?
BlueTemplar··on ABC yanks Jimmy Kimmel’s show ‘indefinitely’ after threat from FCC chair
Why would you expect Substack and Patreon to be any better ?

They are platforms too, and US-based too, and IIRC Patreon has already been caught at least twice engaging in censorship : against some right-wingers, and some porn.

(They are at least less able to manipulate speech through recommendations I guess...)

BlueTemplar··on Wikipedia survives while the rest of the internet breaks
Well, it would take effort to add custom bangs too, it's not like DDG has pre-made bangs for every website...
BlueTemplar··on Wikipedia survives while the rest of the internet breaks
Well, my question then is why didn't you use custom search before DDG added bangs ?

Today in Firefox : right click on a search field, add search engine. Pretty sure that this evolved from that separate search field that browsers used to have in addition to the URL field ?

BlueTemplar··on I kissed comment culture goodbye
This started out well, but then there are other aspects to consider :

Discord, unlike IRC, is killing forums. And is on the Deep Web, meaning that all the lore, all the knowledge is lost to anyone searching for it, including Internet Archive crawlers.

And in addition to that it's a platform, so people using it are collaborating with totalitarian extremists that are turning our countries into (uncool) cyberpunk dystopias.
