I'm not operating my consultancy anymore or holding the consulting license, I moved on to making software for the industry but don't have anything to offer at the moment. If you're <=32 look up Express Entry for skilled workers. You can email me and I can answer some general questions. blake@blakesieders.ca

Yeah, I guess it's both things.
Blake_Emigro··on Not everyone has an internal monologue
I sent the link to my girlfriend, and she didn't find it very interesting until I told her that I don't have this internal monologue, and it turns out she does. Neither of us knew about the other scenario. I visualize and feel things and only use my internal voice if I'm picturing talking to someone else. Even when I'm reading, I don't hear an internal voice. We've watched the Dexter series together and I thought that all of his internal voice was for added drama!

I've worked in this industry for a while, helping people immigrate to Canada, and one interesting thing I've experienced are newcomers that don't want their former peers following them. They left for a different way of life and don't want the past recreated in their new home.

For myself I tend to agree - I want to help those that believe moving to my home country will improve their lives, while at the same time want them to leave some baggage behind. Multiculturalism is great, until it isn't.

Pawn shops hold the goods they purchased for 30 days to give time for someone to make a claim against them as property that was stolen from them. (This is my experience in Canada anyway.) In theory, exchanges could do the same thing for deposits above a certain amount, but this would presumably hurt their business the way things work right now.

It's been taught / used for a long time in North America, I can't speak for other parts of the world. It reminds me of the, "it's not you, it's me", break-up technique, but maybe I just watched too much Seinfeld.

I'm in no way an insider and haven't paid attention to the history of this saga. I was just using public, possibly shaky info like the others. My point was to show that one graph is not the whole story, and it prompted you to add even more details. Your last point is definitely fair. I use Firefox on my phone and recently started learning JavaScript, so um, thank you.

She used the sandwich feedback technique for a eulogy - an interesting approach. https://www.rightattitudes.com/2008/02/20/sandwich-feedback-...

It also doesn't take into consideration revenue growth, which according to the corporation's Wiki page grew much faster and higher in multiples than her salary.

As well, according to the same Wiki, "There will be no shareholders, no stock options will be issued and no dividends will be paid." It would be a bummer to run a company of that size, be dedicated to it for so long, and not have any stake in it. Imagine her opportunity cost...

There are so many internal battles that you have; paralysis by analysis, over-optimization, learn/build versus buy, impostor syndrome, waiting too long to do xyz, and on and on. Then you have those days where you get stuck on something and wonder if anyone even cares about or notices what you do. But, would you have it any other way?
Blake_Emigro··on Show HN: H1-B problems? Check your eligibility to move to Canada
Good question, this is something that I'm going to change in the process flow. The original idea was that everything we had to offer after the assessment would need the name. We have a PDF summary, an email list, and a portal with additional features, (paid). Also we needed something to be able to uniquely identify the session to save it briefly. But over time I came to see how it would be a deterrent and I'll come up a better way. Thanks!

As a non-coding technologist I was also a skeptic about how this was differentiated from other non-coding options, but it seems I need to get on the Webflow train. I will now add it with Figma to the toolbox for my venture builder empowering immigrant entrepreneurs - seems to have a good story to match that too. Cheers Webflow team!

I will never sell anyone's data, or use it for any purpose that the user doesn't want and explicitly agree to.

For this assessment, nothing is being stored unless you submit your email address, it's all front-end JavaScript. Even then, I will just be deleting anything that comes in.

The future intent is to offer the assessment as a gateway to a SaaS product, and also have a marketplace of immigration lawyers that you could pick one to share the info with if you wanted to engage their service. But right now none of that is in place.

Thanks!

When people first inquire about immigrating to Canada, most are not eligible. So the next step for this that I'm creating is the "pathway builder" which will allow you to have multiple assessments side-by-side, and the ability to tweak the variables and see the affect on the score and eligibility.

Thanks!

Canada is great, but obviously I'm biased. I've also traveled all over the US and the people you see on the news are such a small fraction of the real awesome people that make up the country. (Mass shootings are f'ed up though.)

Canada does in a sense have a diversity lottery for work permits, but this is only with countries that we have international labour mobility programs with and excludes the biggest world movers like India, Philippines, Nigeria, China... But our population is so small that there are more people that want to move to Canada than there are actual Canadian citizens, being even more open would radically change the country.

Thanks!

The link you gave is the official CDN government calculator for this purpose. However, that calculator doesn't tell you if you're eligible for any program or not - they have another tool for that, but that tool doesn't give you your ranking score. This leads to many people thinking they are eligible when they're not and can be very discouraging.

It's a little convoluted because the Express Entry system was introduced in 2015 on top of the three existing skilled worker programs and the CDN government just hasn't caught the tech up to where it should be.

I made this tool as the best available for merging these program calculators, and also making it so that I can optionally assess people for provincial programs, work permits etc.

Thanks!

Blake_Emigro··on Show HN: H1-B problems? Check your eligibility to move to Canada
For skilled worker immigration to Canada, every applicant has to take an English test, regardless of country of origin or native language. It doesn't seem right, but it gets really complicated trying to say what countries would have the level of native English that the CDN government wants for their skilled immigrants.

So in this case you would put NO, and then go on and give your approximate level in the next question.

Thanks!

Blake_Emigro··on Show HN: H1-B problems? Check your eligibility to move to Canada
A couple of years ago I had a tool built to assess foreign skilled workers for their eligibility to immigrate to Canada. The tool can be accessed with the link. (Heroku may have to wake up, so give it a few moments.)

Due to a dispute with the devs I lost the access to the tool, but now I'm trying to bring it back to life. It seems especially critical in this moment with the H1-B turmoil down south of Canada.

Please let me know what you think of it.

Also, if you want to talk about your chances of moving to Canada, let me know privately what the doughnut chart in the top right corner says after you complete the assessment with your own details.

I'm not looking to charge you anything, I just want to help my peers and also get my tech back up and running to have another shot at my startup.

Thanks so much Blake, Founder of Emigro Startup Studio
