Black-Plaid··on Ask HN: Going from CTO to Developer?
I did exactly this, was CTO at a startup, it failed, went back to being IC at a large company, then went into management again and realized I am just not happy in that role.

Went back to IC roles, no regrets, much happier with what I am doing. Money isn't everything, as long as you have enough to live well, you don't need to make 7 figures, just make sure you are working toward a couple million in investments for retirement if you are in the US.

Black-Plaid··on $35,000 Tesla Model 3 Available Now
Available seems like a stretch, you can order one, but you sure as hell can't get one any time soon.
Black-Plaid··on Linus Torvalds on Why ARM Won't Win the Server Space
Agreed, at the last 5 software companies I've worked at, the only people without Macs were the sales people.
Black-Plaid··on If you’re unsure whether to quit your job or break up, you probably should
> Up and quitting (hopefully with notice)

Why is it considered bad form to quit without notice, but if a company lets you go without notice, it's "just business"?

Black-Plaid··on Energy Saved, Sleep Lost: The Unintended Consequences of LED Lighting
That was the article about the Switch bulbs if I remember correctly. I think the company went out of business. I have a couple of them and they work and look good, but are really heavy and I can't use them in certain applications that were only ever meant to hold up really light incandescents.
Black-Plaid··on Swift: When Unused Code Is a Bug
Interestingly, in Swift, you Cannot compare `a == b` as the compiler tells you the two types are incompatible.

you have to be kidding me...
Black-Plaid··on Robots fight weeds in challenge to agrochemical giants
There's already an effort to do something along those lines, not sure if it could be scaled up though:

Black-Plaid··on Supernova-propelled white dwarf found zooming through Milky Way at 5 million mph
The article also talks about a black hole accreting at a rate of 1% every million years that is 'currently' 20 billion solar masses.

It is 12 billion ly away, which means, if it really does continue getting 1% larger every million years it's actually ... 143,719,397,330,047,128,616,744,826,647,657,321,145,325,176,127,225,856 billion solar masses at this moment. (if the compound interest calculator is to be believed)

I really hope that's not true.

Black-Plaid··on Emails Show FDA Chemists Have Been Finding Glyphosate in Food
There are also no credible studies showing that chlorine gas is carcinogenic, so it must be safe!
Black-Plaid··on Taiwan ban single-use plastic straws, plastic bags, disposable utensils by 2030
There's an example in Dan Ariely's book Predictably Irrational that showed this exact phenomenon.

Black-Plaid··on Broadpwn Bug Affects Millions of Android and iOS Devices
> Artenstein has later confirmed on Twitter that connecting to a malicious network is not necessary.

> Users that didn't receive this month's Android security patch should only connect to trusted Wi-Fi networks and disable any "Wi-Fi auto-connect" feature, if using one.

What is the point of the second statement?

Black-Plaid··on Houston startup plans to store wind energy underground

Umm, does this seem as pointless to everyone everyone else as me?

Black-Plaid··on NASA Can't Explain What Made This Strange, Deep Hole on Mars
This looks like it has to be a collapse of some void below.

There's no ejecta around the crater, or any of the other impact signs.

Black-Plaid··on Pix2code: Generating Code from a GUI Screenshot
Oh, man, if only the designs I got were this simplistic and only used standard controls with the standard look and feel.

This is a very interesting start, but it's a long long way from being able to even represent in a simple layout what I am asked to do on a regular basis as an iOS dev.

Maybe combine this with a PaintCode back-end and add markup for layout behaviors?

Black-Plaid··on Swift is like Kotlin
It's strange that on the Kotlin side the author goes out of their way to show 'shorter' ways to do things that are also available in Swift but not illustrated.

    let sorted = [1, 3, 6].sorted()
    let sum = [1, 3. 6].reduce(0, +)
as examples

Google actually does this in their Seattle location.
Black-Plaid··on Move Mars to the habitable zone and turn it into another Earth? Sure.[video]
If Mars' gravity isn't strong enough to keep it's atmosphere from being ripped away in it's current orbit, why would moving it closer to the sun be any better?

Black-Plaid··on 2017 Camera News
Someone needs to tell him that his 15" retina mac has 1800 pixels of vertical resolution. No idea where he got that 1200 number.
Black-Plaid··on Google Makes So Much Money, It Never Had to Worry About Financial Discipline
I imagine that most people don't realize they are not Google customers. If you have paid Google money, then you are a customer. People using Google's 'free' services are not. Only customers will get good support.
Black-Plaid··on Formation of Tesla Advanced Automation Germany
I think you are overlooking the fact that very few people buy cars for the engine technology.

They buy on design, price, prestige, history and possibly other 'soft' aspects.

Black-Plaid··on Thank HN: From Google form to $1k in revenue in one month
That's interesting because at the moment there's some group suing Google for alleged age discrimination.

Black-Plaid··on The LHC “nightmare scenario” has come true
> The density needed to form a black hole decreases linearly with radius, sho why is the universe not one?

I feel like this explains it pretty well.

tl;dr: Schwarzschild’s solution is a static one, meaning that the metric of space does not evolve as time progresses.
