Bjoern··on What the Steve Jobs movie got right, and wrong
Are we going to have a movie about Norman Borlaug, Dennis Richie or Douglas Engelbart as well? What made the movie industry pick Jobs as the topic? I honestly don't understand it.
Bjoern··on Meet the Hackers Who Want to Jailbreak the Internet
Jailbreak the Internet? The first talk of the video link below goes in that direction giving some real ideas. Discussing GNUnet and Psyc2.

Rather technical.

"You broke the Internet. We're making ourselves a GNU one." by Christian Grothoff, Carlo von Lynx, Jacob Appelbaum, and Richard Stallman.

Bjoern··on Wikipedia Co-Founder Refuses to Comply With China's Censorship
Probably the real question is, after leaving a project can you be downgraded to nothing from Co-Founder?

Here is Sangers collection of "evidence".

http://blog.larrysanger.org/role-in-wikipedia/my-role-in-wik...

I find this paragraph most interesting.

Wikipedia’s first three press releases (2002, 2003, and 2004), including two that I had nothing to do with, all credited me as founder. It was not until later, in 2004 that Jimmy Wales began omitting mention of my involvement at the start of Wikipedia to the press, and he didn’t start denying that I am co-founder until 2005 or 2006, just when Wikipedia began to enter the public eye.

Bjoern··on Wikipedia Co-Founder Refuses to Comply With China's Censorship
Co-Founder.

Wikipedia was formally launched on 15 January 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, using the concept and technology of a wiki pioneered in 1995 by Ward Cunningham.

Bjoern··on Smartphone-monitoring bins in London track places of work, past behavior
Its quite fascinating that many are not aware of how much data their phones are revealing. In this regard this is a rather interesting and technical presentation on how to exploit such data and going a step further.

"Terrorism, Tracking, Privacy And Human Interactions. Daniel Cuthbert and Glenn Wilkinson, SensePost at 4CON 2012 in London."

Does being bought by Zynga automatically mean that they will close it down for good? I don't think so.
Bjoern··on Japan nuclear body says radioactive water at Fukushima an 'emergency'
> Fukushima did not blow stuff into the atmosphere

Well, that is actually not right. During the accident radioactive water vapor and other gases were released into the atmosphere due to the explosions. Its correct though that, most of it was washed out by rain quickly being diminished into the ground water or carried away onto the ocean.

More importantly a significant portion of the radioactive water seeped into the groundwater, which will have unknown effects in the future.

Bjoern··on Japan nuclear body says radioactive water at Fukushima an 'emergency'
The dilution of the radioactive content by the ocean is probably high. Overall the risk is low for significant contamination due to the overall ocean volume.

The issues are so-called hot-spots which cause certain fish to be extremely radioactive and streams causing concentrations of radioactive materials highly contaminating only certain regions and fish.

That being said, there are so many pollutants in the oceans that I'm confused why people are not more outraged about ocean pollution.

Vice Documentary about garbage streams. e.g. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D41rO7mL6zM

Finally, its certainly not acceptable to have on-going ocean pollution, which is probably happening in Fukushima Daiichi.

Bjoern··on Japan nuclear body says radioactive water at Fukushima an 'emergency'
The infamous Atomic Village problem, particularly Tepco's corruption is quite well known and paradoxically accepted by the society.

What is wrong with e.g. Dovecot/Postfix + Roundcube ? How would this be any better? Is this intended to be a "close as possible" gmail clone?

Just a unrelated side note. Why does this page need to break my browser page scrolling via space bar (in Firefox) ?
Bjoern··on Announcing Trigger.io v2.0
I'm not really an expert on this, so this might be a silly question.

How is this better / different than frameworks such as Phonegap and Titanium ?

Bjoern··on Build your own private, encrypted, open-source Dropbox clone
How does this solution measure up to hosting your own Owncloud or alike? Any upsides / downsides? I'm wondering because many non-technical people need a dead simple solution for this if you want to substitute Dropbox.
Bjoern··on The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements
Everything is "poison" it just depends on the dose.
Bjoern··on The Vitamin Myth: Why We Think We Need Supplements
I don't get this.

Focus on a healthy, balanced diet and make sure you include enough variety focusing on plenty of colorful vegetables, fruits and nuts. Exercise regularly and take good care of your body getting enough sleep and enough sunshine.

Is that not enough?

Bjoern··on The challenge of geocoding Indian addresses
This is very interesting, particularly since I'm working currently on a problem of turning shop addresses in Europe into Long/Lat. Anyone know if there are more technical bits and pieces somewhere?
Bjoern··on Where are the Voyagers?
What I find mind boggling is the fact that Voyagers are not even at a full light day distance yet. Things in Astronomy are often expressed in distances of light years. Unimaginable vast distances away from us.
Bjoern··on Snowden applies for asylum in Russia
Personally, I feel whats really important is that we focus on the Elephant in the room, namely the things which were released by him.

It feels like we are focusing on perception and if he will be labeled a 'traitor' or not.

Bjoern··on Academic publishing as ruinous competition: Is there a way out?
Interestingly, Mendeley [1] tried to be (one of many) social platform with the specific aim to find more easily relevant papers for you. Unfortuantely, (or fortuantely for the founders?) it was bought recently by Elsevier, so I'm curious to see what will happen to it. Finding good relevant papers is still a difficult task imo.
