BillyParadise··on We’re in a Low-Growth World. How Did We Get Here?
Whether they do or they don't, I guarantee they make significantly more than the proposed UBI amount.

Given the choice between making $12k with UBI and sitting on one's ass, or making $50k (guessing here) + 12k UBI to work as a garbage man, do you really think people would just up and quit?

Yeah, but will it get me laid?

BillyParadise··on Ruin My Search History
So they got the retargeting part right, but forgot to add a second tracking code for those who signed up. "Woops"
BillyParadise··on Ask HN: Do you use FreeBSD as web server? Why or why not?
Did for years, prior to that I started on BSDi. Flirted with Linux a few times, but ran into dependency hell. Came back a few years later, the package manager finally worked, so I moved most things to Centos.
BillyParadise··on Senate Passes Bill Exposing Saudi Arabia to 9/11 Legal Claims
Admittedly I'm neither American nor an expert in international affairs, but if taken down to a personal level, I'd rather be taken to court than bombed into oblivion.
BillyParadise··on Why White People Don’t Use White Emoji
or maybe it's hard to read white on white, so people (unconsciously?) choose something more legible.
BillyParadise··on Building a GSM BTS Using the BladeRF, RPi and YateBTS
had to google that before I got to your comment. Thanks, though.

My thoughts exactly. OP, watch this video, and see if it resonates: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zq8zVgumJ6I&ab_channel=Total...
BillyParadise··on The Panama Papers: Here’s What We Know
The number one benefit: Privacy. Until, of course, someone steals your private information from your lawyer.

I'm characterizing this "event" as closer to a theft of credit card information than a Snowdon-esque expose of governments. This is a private company who's data was ransacked. Hope the lawyers at that firm are getting ready to be sued by all their private clients.

BillyParadise··on Canada’s tech startup sector wants easier access to hire top foreign talent
Just be glad Canada doesn't tax worldwide income for nonresidents like the US does. If they did, your cushy SV job would be much less attractive. Though the lack of snow might compensate.
BillyParadise··on Google pays $250M for Sunnyvale offices where 3,000 could work
Why stop even there - why not just build your own town and your own university to train people the Google Way - if Trump can have a university, why not Google?
BillyParadise··on State of the Art JavaScript in 2016
I'd place a small bet on the former, but I wouldn't go all in. I agree with you - those javascript folks are more ADHD than me. And that's saying a lot.

So you wouldn't use a high end Cisco router because they make the crappy "cisco small business" line?
BillyParadise··on Fixing the Internet for Real Time Applications, Part II
I'd be surprised if they haven't already considered it. Building a national backbone is a large endeavour, and now that it's built, a great way to diversify revenue. Games only stay popular for a finite period of time.
BillyParadise··on PayPal Starts Banning VPN and SmartDNS Services
If the subject of this policy is a service for people outside the US who want to pretend they're in the US ( to get Netflix etc), then your point is rather pointless.

As long as these "exploited children" have no BETTER options, the cycle will continue.
BillyParadise··on We ditched Google Analytics
A good upsell, yes. But initial seeding to "affordably priced" online services at full data rate can never be economically viable to the provider. Bandwidth is cheap(er) these days, but routers which can handle big bandwidth are still big bucks.

Hold on, this is hacker news. VCs, this is a great idea!

No, no of course it's not. Initial seeding is a competitive moat for the first mover. Moving a few hundred gigs to a new backup company just to save a few bucks? I don't think I could be bothered, because I KNOW how long it will take.

BillyParadise··on Yahoo Board to Weigh Potential Sale of Internet Business, Sources Say
"Anyone may arrange his affairs so that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which best pays the treasury. There is not even a patriotic duty to increase one's taxes. Over and over again the Courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible. Everyone does it, rich and poor alike and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands."

-- Judge Learned Hand (1872-1961), Judge, U. S. Court of Appeals

BillyParadise··on What is ADD?
My experience is that when you're on the right dosage, no. I do hit a low around 10 hours after taking the pill (I have Vyvanse), when its effects start to wear off. Other than that, the only other side effect I have is that I end up biting the inside of my lower lip, I must be sucking all the time or something. Hurts the next day.

Oh, and if you take a pill, then forget and take another, well, it leads to a VERY jittery day.

BillyParadise··on What is ADD?
Good article. I was diagnosed as an adult, and now have coping strategies (including some stimulants for days when I really need to get shit done). Had I been diagnosed 30 years ago, oh the things I could have done.

The worst? My mother was a teacher. You'd think she would have caught it.

Task switching is really my biggest issue. Once I get in hyperfocus mode on something, a) I really hate getting interrupted, probably because b) getting back focused again is all but impossible.

You'll be a little bit late to the party, but why not repurpose into a bitcoin exchange :) Everyone else seems to have done it.
