Having grown up with parents who acted like this I can say it makes for a miserable childhood.
I wasn't allowed to even ride my bike past one neighbors house on each side when I was a kid because my parents were convinced I would be kidnapped. I couldn't go to a friends house without my parents walking me all the way up to the door and then I had to report home every hour or two or they would call the police as if I was missing. They wouldn't even let me use sharp silverware because I might have hurt myself accidentally. And don't get me started on learning to drive....
I realized only in college how sheltered my life was when I noticed how everyone else was living their lives while I was constantly afraid I was going to die any minute. It has taken years to undo the damage and I honestly despise my parents for it (among other reasons as well).
I feel the same way about Code Complete. I tried to read it but just couldn't force myself to as much of it seemed obvious. Maybe back in the day it was as amazing as people say.
It might not automatically make things clearer, but if it does then it is better and considering the USA is mostly English speakers it shouldn't be a problem. I can see how the language barrier can be an issue in Europe though.
HR should never have the final say in a hire or no hire. I interviewed with a company recently which originally said they wanted me but later took the offer away. I was interviewed by 3 engineers and realized after talking to them that they were all very smart and that I would love working for the company. Apparently they all 3 liked me and I was told they wanted me after I talk to HR and filled out an application. Turns out I had about a 2.9 gpa and they wanted at least a 3.0 so my offer was never official. I still want to work for the company and I might in a few years when my gpa isn't even looked at because I'm sure the engineers will like me again...
Not sure how a joke like this could in any way be seen as an attack against women... comedians talk about all sorts of race, gender and religion topics and joke about wanting to kill the person they live with all the time even though they love them (the article talks about him being funny). Not everyone panders to be PC every moment of every day of their lives. Maybe I'm just insensitive, but it seems like a real stretch to take a single comment to mean he hates women.
Do competitors usually give that shipping for free though? I thought the point of super saver shipping was you don't have to pay for the shipping but the tradeoff is you have to wait however long it takes to get your package. If the competitors are somewhat faster but you still have to pay then the scenarios can't really be compared (I am a prime member so I have paid less than $1 per delivery for guaranteed two day shipping so I have never even considered alternatives).
Asking someone out to a date the first time is perfectly legal. The moment you ask again when they say no is considered harassment and then you could get fired, but I doubt you would have any real issue the first time you ask.
I made about 2/3 of the money in my Coop as I do now as a full time employee but then again my university required that we have a certain amount of paid internship time to get our degree so my experience may be atypical.
Entry level with two years of experience?? I'd hope that isn't very strict or basically no one would be able to apply for the job meeting the requirements unless internships count, and even then you usually get like 1.5 years of experience that way.
As I read this article I sit in an open office environment where us engineers trying our best to focus on what we are doing. We use to have our own offices but those are now empty because the interior designer told our CEO that packing everyone into a big open space was, of course, cheaper but also happens to be a great environment for knowledge workers to "work together to solve problems". The engineer that acts as support for common problems and constantly gets phone calls and loud talking floor workers sits right in the middle of us. Being on the edge of the open area and having a wall to my back wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for said wall having big huge windows so people can see what I'm doing and I can't hear them walking up behind me.
Ever since the move over to this open space I have honestly thought about quitting my job. One guy already has left after they moved him from his office with a nice view out the window to sitting facing a corner. I always feel like I'm being watched and that I can't even check my email really quick without being thought of as a slacker. A part of me wants to build a case from research to show my boss how bad this kind of environment really is but I know that nothing will change (even though the last CEO is long gone).
I still use it to play Terraria because its creator never fixed the multiplayer (which by the way if you play will be updated very soon with lots of new content).
Exactly. I wouldn't play Dota 2 anymore if all the big fans could simply dump a couple hundred bucks into it and be better than everyone else. It's the reason I stopped playing games like Magic the Gathering as well.
While there are some $60 titles that are so good you can justify paying that much for a mere 10 hours of play, most are not worth nearly that much due to lack of replayability. If everyone keeps buying lousy games for full price the companies will keep producing lousy games because they don't need to be creative. I think many gamers have realized this and that is why indie games have been cropping up everywhere lately. I paid $10 for minecraft and have gotten hundreds of hours out of it so the cost is small per hour.
This. Honestly, how can they act like we should pay for the DLC when it was ready for ME3 on day one! I am totally against DLC and have only ever bought DLC for Skyrim because it added enough gameplay to be worth the cost.
Totally agree, I never even touch job openings that are looking for contract to hire. Some companies just want you for a short time and this is a way to get better talent without having to keep them, and I definitely don't want to relocate with the risk they won't need me in six months.
The death penalties are what really turn me off to Dota. A player A killing a player B results in player B being unable to play for a short time, player A getting experience AND player A getting gold? It seems like far too many matches quickly become one sided and you either farm them or are the ones getting farmed.
I totally agree with this. I recently had a job interview at a great company (I have a friend who works there so I know all the details) and was interviewed by three engineers who loved me. I got an email from someone in HR saying the engineers thought I would be a great fit and they wanted to hire me as long as I had at least a 3.0 GPA. Turns out I was about 0.1 point short and that killed my chance to work there. GPA plays too big of a role in most HR departments.
I feel the same way about everything MS has produced/is planning on producing in the near future. IE, Windows 8, Xbox One, Microsoft Office, the list just goes on.
Why, if this is version 5.0, does the document it downloads say version 4.0? Am I the only one seeing this? The details also mention previous version 3.0 on the webpage.
