Bilal_io··on Show HN: I'm building a tool to practice numbers in Arabic
As a North African Arab (not Egyptian), I interact with other arabs each using their own dialect, because they wouldn't be able to understand my dialect easily. However, the claim being made about Modern Standard (not classical) Arabic or MSA for short, is that you can use it to communicate with any Arab around the world, anyone with highschool or even middle school level of education can communicate with you.

You may hear the claim that Egyptian Arabic is understood by everyone in the Arab world and that's true. But reminder that Egyptians understand most other dialects. You can imagine a person speaking Qatari with an Egyptian, it's possible that each uses their dialect and understand each other. But that wouldn't be the case for someone that only knows Egyptian.

Bilal_io··on Internet-connected cars fail privacy and security tests conducted by Mozilla
They have no respect for privacy. I use a Ford.com@domain.com to request a quote from Ford's official website. Apparently Ford shared my information with a dealer. That makes sense, but the dealer continued to email me and advertise cars from other manufacturers.
Bilal_io··on Ask HN: I’m an FCC Commissioner proposing regulation of IoT security updates
Ignorance is not a wish. We're talking about users that don't know any better when buying products
Bilal_io··on OpenTF repository is now public
From the name OpenTF (Open Terraform) I assumed it's specific to Terraform
Bilal_io··on Ask HN: I’m an FCC Commissioner proposing regulation of IoT security updates
A relatively small group of people won't have an effect, that's why regulation plays an important role.
Bilal_io··on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile want to access your bank account
Xfinity did the same. I had to switch from credit card to bank account to keep my $10 discount. If I recall correctly the deadline was July 31st
Bilal_io··on It’s not intelligent if it always halts: A critical perspective on AI approaches
Not sure if you'd be interested in what Islam says about consciousness. But I can share a verse from the Quran.

> ( 85 ) And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the soul. Say, "The soul is of the affair of my Lord. And mankind have not been given of knowledge except a little." ( 86 ) And if We willed, We could surely do away with that which We revealed to you. Then you would not find for yourself concerning it an advocate against Us. Quran 17:85-86

In Islam the soul and consciousness are considered one. Even sleep is considered "small" death.

The belief is oth the soul and body are created. And that the soul soul will be resurrected into a new body in the day of judgement.

In chapter 19 "Marry":

> ( 9 ) [An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.' " Quran 19:9

And from the same chapter:

> ( 67 ) Does man not remember that We created him before, while he was nothing? QURAN 19:67

Bilal_io··on Modern Computer Architecture and Organization - Second Edition (2022)
The description of the ARM edition says Nvidia GPU is used throughout the book for comparison
Bilal_io··on Show HN: Anonymize HN – a Chrome extension to anonymize Hacker News users
It would be vrry interesting to clone and repurpose this extension to show tags next to known users from a centralized database. Example's of the tags would be "mod", "{name of tool/library/language} author", "expert in {area}", "CEO of {comapny name}", etc.
Bilal_io··on Faster filesystem access with Directfs
When you think of security you gotta think of Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability.

If you make reads less secure writes, then you'd be weakening the Confidentiality aspect.

Bilal_io··on Svelte is a language
Not really on:click is not valid HTML
Bilal_io··on Docuseal: Open-source DocuSign alternative
Thank you for creating this and making it open source.

What mechanism(s) is used to ensure non-repudiation?

I appreciate that the demo is not behind a sign up wall, but is account creation and email verification required for invitees to sign any documents?

Are IP addresses stored as part of the digital signature?

Any other mechanism?

Bilal_io··on Svelte is a language
One is syntactically correct HTML, and the other is not. That's was the only point of my comment
Bilal_io··on Svelte is a language
I agree with you, it looks weird, but my point was that it's correct HTML syntax, even though you cannot expect it to work if you open an Angular template in a browser, but an HTML parser can tell you it's syntactically correct.
Bilal_io··on Svelte is a language
Angular template syntax is correct HTML syntax. It's nothing like the examples abovd.
Bilal_io··on Show HN: BillaBear – Self-Hosted SaaS Subscription Management and Billing
Relevant bit for those curious:

> Is BillaBear Open Source?

> No. BillaBear is released under the source-available license Business Source License. You can find it in the license.md. This is the same license as used by Sentry, CoackroachDB, and many more.

> After 3-years from the release date of a version, it will then become open-source.

Bilal_io··on In a surprising twist, I just received a second $100k sponsorship for Ladybird
Counterpointing or arguing against a baseless claim gives some legitimacy to said claim.
Bilal_io··on What if we’re thinking about inflation all wrong?
That's a very weak argument. Insulin is affordable in every country that is not the US.
Bilal_io··on Is React Having an Angular.js Moment?
The author is talking about Angular.js, which the legacy version 1.x, and not the modern Angular 2+.
Bilal_io··on We're joining the Reddit blackout from June 12th to 14th
Some subreddits, specifically r/cars says till the 14th and maybe beyond. It shows that they're willing to continue the blackout after the 14th if r/reddit doesn't change course.
Bilal_io··on EPUB 3.3 becomes a W3C recommendation
KDE's okular might be a good choice. I haven't personally used it for epub but I know it supports it.

Bilal_io··on Lawyer cited 6 fake cases made up by ChatGPT; judge calls it “unprecedented”
> LLMs can say “I don’t know”. Even ChatGPT can do it.

That's the problem in my opinion. When you know something is capable of saying "I don't know" but confidently spits out some hallucinated BS is when the average person eats it up.

Bilal_io··on A Student-Loan Payment Pause Led Borrowers to Take on More Debt

Bilal_io··on Angular v16
> To me it feels like Angular is slowly dying. No idea though, why so many companies still use it for new projects.

These seem like two contradictory statements.

I use Angular at work and I love it. And the sentiment is similar among my peers.

Bilal_io··on Show HN: Currl – A free text-based social bookmarking website

Bilal_io··on Is infinity an odd or even number? (2011)
I read the title and I sarcastically thought "ask JavaScript!" Your comment didn't disappoint. Importing the is-even package is the cherry on top.
