BigTTYGothGF··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
I grew up in rural America.

The original claim was: > in high trust societies, armed people are very polite people

In my experience, there was no connection between being armed and being polite.

> Or just visit your local gun range

Went to one many times when I lived in Texas, I think I've inhaled enough lead to last me the rest of my life.

"An armed society is a polite society" was originally said by Heinlein, who for all his faults would have had something to say about outsourcing your thinking to a machine.

BigTTYGothGF··on Burning Man death rates – A short lesson in statistics
> could presumably leave anytime

That's a big presumption.

BigTTYGothGF··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
I'm asking you, and furthermore I'm not asking for a list of high trust societies, I'm asking for ones in which "armed people are very polite people".
BigTTYGothGF··on Dots: Always-on agents
> They also have a nasty habit of....

This is extremely not the case.

BigTTYGothGF··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
> In high trust societies, armed people are very polite people

Surely you could name three such societies?

BigTTYGothGF··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
I'd split it at 99.98% original, 0.015% Anthropic, 0.005% Chinese, and that's being exceedingly generous to the AI companies, there should be several more 9s and 0s in there.
BigTTYGothGF··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Kate Elliott's great, she had a couple of what I thought were recent duds ("Servant Mage", "Keeper's Six") but the "Crown of Stars" and "Crossroads" series are all-timers.

Why, then, do you look at the speck in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the log in your own eye?
BigTTYGothGF··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
> resulting in people not feeling safe to say what they really mean

This is hacker news, most of us are anonymous. People say all sorts of vile things on here. Come on, Ambolia, have the courage of your convictions.

BigTTYGothGF··on The Normalization of Inexplicable Failures
I certainly do believe that some developers are artists, see for example the IOCCC, and more who are or would like to be artisans, but by and large our colleagues' hearts are closed to the Muses.
BigTTYGothGF··on The Normalization of Inexplicable Failures
> Developers are artists

I don't think this has ever, as a rule, been true.

BigTTYGothGF··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
> Your liver makes platelets

Megakaryocytes are primarily bone marrow cells.

BigTTYGothGF··on Two Git ignore files nobody told me about
> but pushing the silly filename I picked for my private notes to a remote repository feels unclean

Pick a directory for them and ignore the directory. Other team members who want to keep their own notes can use that directory as well.

BigTTYGothGF··on AMD's random number generator can't generate a 0?
That's a thing some people used to believe, I guess some of them still do.
BigTTYGothGF··on AMD's random number generator can't generate a 0?
> So, it must follow

It certainly does not.

A never-zero RNG is something one should know about, so that it can be mitigated if necessary, but it's not inherently a dealbreaker.

BigTTYGothGF··on Why do we need human mathematicians anymore?
Lots of deans and college presidents asking themselves the same question.
BigTTYGothGF··on San Francisco Onion Futures Company
We as a society seem to have done OK without onion futures for these past 70 years, makes you wonder what other futures trading we could do without.
BigTTYGothGF··on North Korean nuclear test sets off years of earthquakes
There's a lot of people in this thread who see "North Korea" and "nuclear test" and get fired up but would otherwise shrug if it were instead, say, "Oklahoma" and "fracking".

The supplemental information is available and says: > Our earthquake catalog consists primarily of small events with magnitudes of < 2.0 and there were 1399 of them.

The cited Ren&al says: > The magnitudes of these seismic events primarily range from 1.5 to 2.5 and that there were 647 of them.

USGS (https://www.usgs.gov/media/images/earthquake-and-energy-comp...) says that a magnitude 2.0 earthquake is the equivalent energy of 56kg of explosives, which is more than I'd want to be around but I think for people who actually use the stuff it's not a lot.

BigTTYGothGF··on How do we prevent mathemathics from devolving into the Medieval Era of secrecy?
I am a (former) mathematician and know many more.

> Maybe mathematicians are smart enough to never ever buy such piece of shit on higher principle

They are not. Mathematicians are as human as most of the rest of us here.

BigTTYGothGF··on The American Religion of Self-Storage Facilities
> The kind of rampant, commoditized consumerism where we routinely snub our noses at and throw away perfectly useful goods is a rather recent trend.

By and large the kids already have perfectly useful goods but no room for more.

BigTTYGothGF··on Measuring Gauss-Seidel loop-carried dependency and fixing it via loop unrolling
LAPACK doesn't do sparse systems.

(On the other hand, I skimmed the article and this might be a banded system, which LAPACK can handle).

BigTTYGothGF··on Base84 deserves a place in file names

BigTTYGothGF··on Music Theory for the 21st-Century Classroom
That's clearly not what was meant, even without the context of this following bit:

> To describe tones that exist in music, we can describe tones that exist on a piano. There are only two rules:

> the first key must play a tone of 27.5 Hz each next key must play a tone 6% higher than the previous key

(This is not to mention that at a 1.06x increase per half step you're going to be sharp by 1 cent / octave which starts to add up).
