BigJ1211··on The Overcomplexity of the Shadcn Radio Button
I don't really keep up with these Tech/Soft tubers, but watch a video on occasion. Can't really say I find something-imagen guilty of this, but like I said I watch the occasional video, not the stream. What I've watched from him is generally about what he agrees/disagrees with and he also tells you why he thinks that. Often reading articles/blogposts. Not to dismiss your opinion, but I would put him in the entertaining with substantive arguments category.

IMO software education/tainment suffers much worse though. They teach you how to do X in only this specific way with these specific tools, generally sponsored. Not the admittedly far more boring basics to do it yourself, or how to actually use these tools in a broader sense.

Calorie abundance is accurate too, food has never been as cheap and delicious as it is now. Not to mention the ultra-processed high-density foods we have now.

Meaning you can easily overeat with an active lifestyle too. In fact we have entire sports in which it's beneficial to do so.

(Rugby/American Football, Strongman competitions and Sumo wrestling to name a few obvious ones)

Both China and Russia have claimed parts of other countries using the tactic of moving in their people to then use that as an excuse to annex or overtake those parts.

Crimea for Russia as an example, but this is also true for other former Soviet states.

With China it's been Bhutan, India, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Japan. In addition to their claims over Taiwan or their excuse to (culturally) genocide the Uighur in China).

That is ignoring Africa as a whole, where conflicts are far more common. To name a recent example, over 50,000 Nigerian Christians have been killed by Islamists in the past 16 years. The world is far more bloody than most people seem to realize. The world peace has only been a peace in a relative sense.

BigJ1211··on ‘I witnessed war crimes’ in Gaza – former worker at GHF aid site [video]
Israel definitely wants the West Bank (and the Golan Heights), it didn't demonstrate the same interest in Gaza. Which isn't that strange considering there's very little value in the land itself.

They were content with the Palestinians keeping to themselves in that corner of the land. At least that's what it looked like between 2005 and 2023. That isn't to say they had no designs on it further in the future, they might have had plans to annex it after fully claiming the West Bank. (Or at least certain groups within Israel)

When the Nazis were driven out? I hope you mean when the USSR fell, because Poland was under their control for about 45 years. The Red Army entered Poland in 1944.

How do you not see this as circular reinforcement?

Hamas justifies it's attacks by pointing to Israel, and Israel justifies it by pointing to Hamas.

Things like Hamas still holding 50 hostages, rockets still being fired into Israel etc.

Israel will not magically stop when Hamas still exists.

> Imagine the amount of hate that is brewed against Israel again right now. Would you ever forget or forgive if as a child you were starved, and witnessed endless horrors ? Your city in shambles, rubble and blood everywhere, death and misery wherever you look at ?

And so do attacks like October 7th. Of course Israelis want to get rid of Hamas. The majority of Israelis don't want to genocide the Gazans, but like you pointed out, Netanyahu and his goons do.

If that's your criteria this is equally true on the other side of this conflict. Even predating the Jewish exodus from many Arabic nations.

The primary difference between them is that the side which openly shouts for genocide doesn't have the means that the side that at least doesn't openly shout for genocide has. (By openly I mean the majority of the people, not select extreme individuals. Some of whom are in positions of power.)

I'm not going the route that it's okay to want to genocide a peoples because of things that were done to them by another group of people. Because if that's your way of viewing this conflict, then Israel has more than enough to point at to 'justify' their genocide.

And I'm not going to excuse calls for genocide with "well, they don't have the power to, so who cares". Because all these routes lead straight to hell. You can't even begin to resolve the conflicts between these peoples.

This conflict isn't nearly as cut-and-dry as say Russia-Ukraine, and it benefits no one to pretend it is. Ukraine never invaded Russia, nor did it commit any terrorism against them. This isn't the case between Israel and the Palestinians.

Between 1968-2023 over 3500 acts of terrorism were committed by the Palestinians against Israel. Of which the vast majority (Between 70-78% depending on if you count purely civilian targets), targeted civilians.

You can argue for a long time which side committed the most heinous acts, but neither side is anywhere close to "clean".

This is why I strongly adhere to WET¹, you discover so much about the domain the first time you write something. By the time you have it 'working' you realize you should've written vastly different code to solve or cut-off edge cases.

That's why these days I just start writing code, get it to 'it works!' level. To then throw it all away and start again. Takes a little more effort, but the payoff is far less problematic code and tech debt.

Ethnic cleansing isn't genocide and vise-versa. Genocide is very specifically about murdering a group of individuals for their shared characteristic, not displacing them.

In this case, the Palestinians and other groups want to genocide the Jews. The Jews seem to mostly (or smaller groups within Israel at least) want to ethnically cleanse the non-Jewish Palestinians from modern day Israel.

BigJ1211··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
There IS video, just not of what's being claimed. With the amount of constant propaganda about this conflict in particular, you cannot trust anything that you can't actually verify. Big media outlets, like the BBC have been caught with their pants down multiple times. Making claims they themselves did not and could not verify. Having to make constant retractions and clarifications because they want to hit 'publish' does not a reliable news source make.

The fact that you can see I'm actually looking for sources, should at least prove to you that I'm trying to verify. In this case I can find no direct video evidence of the claim. And the only news source using a video with no casualties, but at least there's gunfire, is from Al Jazeera. Hardly unbiased.

I do want to know why you think there wouldn't be an overwhelming amount of video evidence at this point. This claim has been made multiple times, there is a lot of video footage being filmed and shared constantly, yet nothing about this specific one?

BigJ1211··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
They've been making that claim since the start of the conflict, including calling it a genocide. There have been an overwhelming amount of articles that later had to be retracted about Israel shooting at aid distribution centers. Not a single video of IDF soldiers shooting at them has been shown.

Unless I get to see actual evidence, I'm not inclined to believe this claim. I see articles report things like: "Since the GHF was launched, Israeli forces have killed more than 400 Palestinians trying to collect food aid, the UN and local doctors say. Israel says the new distribution system stops aid going to Hamas."

And yet there is 0 video evidence of the IDF shooting at them? I don't believe it. There is so much video and pictures floating around social media, yet we don't have any for this claim?

All I can find are articles like this: https://edition.cnn.com/2025/06/04/middleeast/israel-militar.... All you can see is people taking cover by lying prone on the ground.

Or this one by Al Jazeera: https://www.aljazeera.com/video/newsfeed/2025/7/15/video-sho...

Which again shows people prone, bullets shot near them this time.

There's been so much horse-shit and propaganda, I'm not going to believe any claim, unless it is accompanied by direct video evidence.

BigJ1211··on The United States withdraws from UNESCO
Ironically the claim about corruption also applies to this admin. (See crypto scams for access to the president, and the Epstein files promises for well-known examples)

I do agree with them that there is a 'rot' in these institutes. Though I don't know anything specific about the UNESCO that would warrant the withdrawal.

For institutes like the UN and UNRWA it does ring true however. It is wild to see claims of genocide where there isn't one and zero claims or calls for arrest when clear unambiguous genocidal massacres start taking place. UNRWA funded and run schools having theater classes where the children role-play murdering Jews is absurd and shouldn't be happening. (To name an example from before the 7th)

The UN should be setting a singular standard and holding everyone to account roughly equally. Not this clear and open corruption of its proclaimed principles. Whether it's in the main body or it's subsidiaries.

The current media and political landscape is a joke, there don't seem to be any standards. Frankly the future looks rather bleak. I really hope we can find to way back to 'common sense'. Good journalism, holding politicians to account and treating everyone equally, holding them to the same standards.

Though I don't disagree principally. My experience with government contracts echos the much higher costs you have to make to get 'simple' things through. You end up jumping through so many hoops to get something cheap through that you spend much more on the process than the part could ever cost.

Granted 8000% is still absurd, but 1000% wouldn't necessarily be unrealistic.

BigJ1211··on A near impossible literacy test Louisiana used to suppress the black vote
This is how it works in most EU countries afaik (at least where I live).

You're automatically registered essentially. You only need to show up with the form/ballet you were sent and your ID. Your vote is anonymous, just registered that you voted.

Personally I like the Aussie way even more, which is compulsory.

I feel this is necessary in a democracy. Voting needs to be easy, swift and free for that to work though.

Just checked my preconceived notions.

The commonality of burnout in some form to full burnout seems to be roughly 75% for employees[1] and roughly 70% for executives[2] and 25% ~ 75% for entrepreneurs[3].

My experience is based mostly on the latter.

[1]: https://www.gallup.com/topic/burnout.aspx / https://www.flexjobs.com/blog/post/flexjobs-mha-mental-healt... [2]: https://www.forbes.com/sites/forbescoachescouncil/2023/01/23... [3]: https://wifitalents.com/statistic/entrepreneur-burnout/

The statistics on this vary wildly, so I'd take all these statistics with a giant grain of salt.

BigJ1211··on One-man SaaS, 9 Years In
I'm absolutely convinced that burnout is a function of spending time on things you loathe to do. Not how much time you spend on something you love doing.

Most people I know that actually work all-the-time, not self-proclaimed "I work X hour weeks people that say it to sound 'cool'" people. Never have a burnout.

Most of those people also go on extended vacations of say 5-7 weeks. But still work 2-3 hours every day.

Burnout seems much more common in the average worker that only works a 9-5.

BigJ1211··on I spend £8,500 a year to live on a train
That really depends on the train you were taking.

Intercity trains have had sockets for a while, but YMMV if this wasn't on the most used tracks.

Short distance or trains that stop at towns (called sprinters) didn't. Haven't ridden a train in quite a few years so that might have changed.

The trains are mostly on time though, which is something most countries fail at. Granted Dutch people still complain about public transport, me included. Most people think it's too expensive and it takes too long to really get anywhere that isn't a direct connection. These days it is often cheaper to go by car too, especially if you are going somewhere with more than one person.

Depending on the article the Netherlands seems to be either high in the top 10 or low in the top 20.

Checked the latest WEF report I could find (2021), and it's ranked 14 on there. But that includes much more than just public transport. So not that useful. (Travel & Tourism Development or T&T index).
