BenjiWiebe··on PCs refuse to shut down after Microsoft patch
I'm sure they meant S5 - shutdown. I had to Google it as I also guessed S0 = shutdown.
BenjiWiebe··on Just the Browser
My grandfather is continually unintentionally starting group voice chats because of that ridiculous design choice.

He has one going right now.

BenjiWiebe··on Just the Browser
Except Telegram requires you to pay to have the option of only allowing your contacts to message you.

And even then, if the spammer buys premium, they can still message you!

BenjiWiebe··on Have Taken Up Farming
...I should write a blog.

I live on a small dairy farm. We milk the cows, make cheese, raise most of the forage for the cows, do our own plumbing, electrical, and the majority of the mechanical repairs. We do most of the repairs ourselves on our milking robot.

Sometimes it's hard to remember I have such an amazing opportunity to do a little bit of everything.

BenjiWiebe··on Ask HN: Why does Google still provide an open redirect for phishers?
Doesn't show a notice or require user interaction for me.

Android, mobile Firefox.

BenjiWiebe··on Replace the Retiring Windows XP with Linux (2014)
But at least you can use the distro's repo for most things. On Windows, it's all "curl | sudo bash" equivalent, unless you actually use the Microsoft store.
BenjiWiebe··on Replace the Retiring Windows XP with Linux (2014)
Linux distributions do typically have the huge benefit of having a decent package manager.

Whereas on Windows, you are expected to download all your software from various websites, ridden with big green download button ads.

And as for updates, once again there is no uniform way of finding or installing updates, so your chance of using outdated (and maybe vulnerable) software is higher on Windows.

BenjiWiebe··on Iran Goes Into IPv6 Blackout
Starlink receivers aren't built out of common readily available components. It's fancy RF stuff.
BenjiWiebe··on Iran Goes Into IPv6 Blackout
Well the better your beam is directed, the less lateral noise there is.

A simple 3 element yagi has <1% of the power to the sides. It has more of the power straight behind it, but still 1% or so of the main lobe.

BenjiWiebe··on The Kimwolf botnet is stalking your local network
Client isolation is a Wi-Fi feature, not an Ethernet feature. So a wireless client can't talk directly to another wireless client when client isolation is on.

Wired clients are unaffected.

BenjiWiebe··on Native Amiga Filesystems on macOS / Linux / Windows with FUSE
Pretty cool. This isn't what I first thought of as native Amiga filesystem support - this is support for the native Amiga filesystem drivers, through m68k emulation.
BenjiWiebe··on Brave overhauled its Rust adblock engine with FlatBuffers, cutting memory 75%
I believe some distros require un-vendoring before accepting the package.

If the code you vendored was well hidden so the distro maintainer didn't notice, perhaps the bad guys would also fail to realize you were using (for instance) libxml2, and not consider your software a target for attack.

BenjiWiebe··on Raspberry Pi and mini PC home lab prices hit parity as DRAM costs skyrocket
The Orange Pi 5 (RK3588 processor) with 4GB RAM is $103 on Amazon.

Don't know if that's what GP is talking about though. Too bad they didn't specify a model.

BenjiWiebe··on Portland's gas-powered leaf blower ban goes into effect
There's good battery powered stuff out there, and there's a lot of bad battery powered stuff out there. Hopefully the good gets more common and the bad gets less common.

I think batteries are good enough for your needs, just that there's too much junk on the market.

BenjiWiebe··on 2025 was a disaster for Windows 11
7-zip yes, the others no.
BenjiWiebe··on 2025 was a disaster for Windows 11
I was born in the 90s, but I'm nostalgic for the 80s/90s at least w.r.t computers.
BenjiWiebe··on 2025 was a disaster for Windows 11
I haven't noticed slowness in the right click menu on <= windows 10. On Windows 11 it's slower simply because I have to open a second menu to get to what I want.
BenjiWiebe··on 2025 was a disaster for Windows 11
How many IDEs run it all in one process? As far as I know they still call lots of processes.
BenjiWiebe··on Meta's ads tools started switching out top-performing ads with AI-generated ones
I hate time change but I love daylight savings time.

I'll put up with the switch if that's the only way to get DST.

BenjiWiebe··on Swapping SIM cards used to be easy, and then came eSIM
Verizon even does something like that with physical SIMs. My father got a new phone and we moved the SIM card to it. Some things worked, some didn't. Called customer service, they said you can't just move the SIM like that!

Ended up switching to AT&T.

BenjiWiebe··on Toll roads are spreading in America
Not everyone uses the roads the same amount. It would disincentivize having a job with a 40 mile commute.

Also trains/subways are obviously another non-road transport option.

BenjiWiebe··on What an unprocessed photo looks like
Re landscape photography: If it actually looked like that in person 1 percent of the time, I'd argue it's still accurate to reality.
BenjiWiebe··on What an unprocessed photo looks like
Wouldn't be a genuine version of what my eyes would've seen, had I been the one looking instead of the camera.

I can't see infrared.

BenjiWiebe··on Mruby: Ruby for Embedded Systems
I know both C and Ruby, and Ruby is far more than syntactic sugar over C.

Like not even close.

BenjiWiebe··on Package managers keep using Git as a database, it never works out
Fixing problems when they appear is ethical.

Refusing to fix a problem that hasn't appeared yet, but has been/can be foreseen - that's different. I personally wouldn't call it unethical, but I'd consider it a negative.

BenjiWiebe··on Package managers keep using Git as a database, it never works out
If the class takes N minutes and one person arrives 1 minute late, and the rest of the class is waiting for them, it does stack. Every one of those students lost a minute. Far worse than one student losing one minute.
BenjiWiebe··on I sell onions on the Internet (2019)
Probably: "band names" -> Science, Engineering, TECHNOLOGY, Math college -> "domain names"

Learned about more things tech, started thinking about domains more than bands.

BenjiWiebe··on It's Always TCP_NODELAY
As of recently, OpenSSH prevents keystroke timing analysis on it's own.
BenjiWiebe··on Linux 6.19's Significant ~30% Performance Boost for Old AMD Radeon GPUs
I hoped this was relevant to me, but it's for GCN 1.0/1.1 GPUs. I'm still running a pre-GCN GPU (Northern Islands/Cayman/6970).
