Beijinger··on World Train Map – 1247 train routes around the world
I mistook it for https://www.openrailwaymap.org/
Beijinger··on World Train Map – 1247 train routes around the world
I would not bet on AI. I think this map is older.
Beijinger··on Germany Sets New Six-Month Startup Record
Yes. I actually also interviewed once for a job there.

Not the sharpest minds. More bureaucratic than entrepreneurial. At the time, none of the C-suite had ever run their own company. Zero international experience. Complete mediocrity.

Beijinger··on Germany Sets New Six-Month Startup Record
No shit man. Their government high tech (!) VC fund rejected a high tech proposal from me (Medical devices), instead financed things like: https://www.mymuesli.com/
Beijinger··on Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake – 5 km S of San José del Palmar, Colombia
I mean, it happens when you are half asleep. Later I realized that this would have been impossible with a prestressed concrete ceiling/floor.
Beijinger··on Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake – 5 km S of San José del Palmar, Colombia
Nah. Not really. I am used to phone alerts from Kyiv. When Putin and Klischko were making a pissing contest in the sky over Kyiv.
Beijinger··on Magnitude 7.4 Earthquake – 5 km S of San José del Palmar, Colombia
My bed was shaking. I thought the guy in the other room had rough sex. Just realized when I got up, based on the warning message on my phone, that it was an earthquake.
Beijinger··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
Eat a Banana. Or a Beef Jerky.
Beijinger··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
Mars bar is not food, it is basically packaged trash. It fits well the place where it was found.

If you fed a lion the average American diet, it would die. And red meat isn't really the problem.

Don't kill yourself. Dont eat trash.

Most lawyers

1. First don't really care, since they get the money from their client

2. Think you will give in if they write a threatening letter.

I am not a lawyer but most lawyers have had a bad experience with me. (I have worked in regulatory and have written patents that were granted. So I am not a total NOOB). Many communications ended with "we don't want to pursue this further..."

Beijinger··on A domain can now say it is for sale, in DNS
You write about creating a precedent by using a trade term in commerce, and in common law this has some meaning, but it is still very different.
Beijinger··on _for-sale DNS records
Never be intimidated by a trademark. Especially, if your domain is older than the trademark. Even if it isn't, there are many trademark classes.
Beijinger··on The Computational Theory of Mind (2015)
Not broad enough. Better: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calculating_Space
Beijinger··on NSF pilots 4-year PhDs with industry research placements
"The most important outcome of a PhD is not the list of publications but a person who deeply understands a domain, knows how to critically analyze a problem, and finds good solutions. Doing a PhD 'in industry' also allows you to do this. And it gives you a foot in the door at that company."

Interesting though. Not sure you can have an extensive publication list without a deep domain understanding. But an extensive publication list normally assures that you have it.

My professor always said, I don't want to see you PhD thesis, just show me your publication list. Actually, while we were obligated to write a thesis, in his opinion it should be sufficient to just submit your publications.

Beijinger··on NSF pilots 4-year PhDs with industry research placements
Why does my post get downvoted?

In all OECD countries, but in particular in Germany, there seems to be an enormous overproduction of PhDs – in case one sees a PhD as the starting point of an academic career or as an important asset on the job market.

https://socialscienceworks.org/2015/07/243/are-there-too-man...

I am aware of that system, doing a PhD in a company as an external PhD student. The "research" is extremely applied. That is good for the company, possibly even a better career choice, but has limited scientific value. You are also unlikely to switch back to academia and become a professor.

Most people mistake "feeling" for "thinking". Just because you don't like my post, does not mean it is not true.

Beijinger··on NSF pilots 4-year PhDs with industry research placements
Why the Downvote?
Beijinger··on NSF pilots 4-year PhDs with industry research placements
This is just because of the PhD inflation in Germany. It has little scientific value.
Beijinger··on Future euro banknote design proposals
I mean. Put famous Europeans on it. Socrates, Platon, Leonardo, Newton, Leibnitz, Einstein, Hitler....
Beijinger··on Who Is America's Homer?
easy one:

"All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since." Ernest Hemingway

Beijinger··on SpaceX stock erases all its gains and slides below IPO price in intraday trading
Launch service makes billions in losses and the Chinese have now the same technology. The only cash cow they have is Starlink.

If you read the IPO prospectus, none of theses things is were the money is supposed to be earned in the future. The money comes from the 3rd pillar, AI. Again AI is the biggest loss maker they have.

I would not invest in their launch services, nor in their AI. But I would invest in StarLink if they spun it off and if it were decently priced.

"SpaceX is completely globally dominant in its industries (launch technology and orbital telecom)"

1. Have you seen what the Chinese have come up with? https://x.com/pronounced_kyle/status/2075526710003413004

2. None of these things are, where the money is supposed to come from in the future: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHD8BDFYyGI

I don't know the future, nor do I give investing advise. I don't want this stock.

Beijinger··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
All this are Android flavors.
Beijinger··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
Oh, sorry, I was only thinking phone. I use myself an unsusual OS, Bodhi Linux, but for phones the selection is much more limited.
Beijinger··on DOGE is done. What happened to its records?
To clarify one thing: NIH grants is a wide field. I only was talking about NIH SBIR grants and SBIR grants in general.
Beijinger··on European "age verification" "app" forcing everyone to use Android or iOS
I am not a fan of such an "app". But the app is, as far as I understand, for things like Facebook, TikTok etc.

Are there any other Operating Systems than iOS, Android or Android flavors?

WebOS was nice but who is still using this? Symbian? Can you even use Social Media Apps with another phone OS?

Beijinger··on DOGE is done. What happened to its records?
No. Smart. Life experience. I am not looking for problems.

If authorities ask me: No, I know nothing, I just wanted to look important on Hackernews. All a joke, I have no inside information.

Beijinger··on How Ukraine Built a War Fighting State
This must have happened in the last year since I was there in 2024 and this was definately not the case!
