Beaver117··on Where have all the laid-off tech workers gone?
Yes, I quit, wasn't laid off. But now I'm in the same pool as the tens of thousands of other very qualified people. How do you think that affects my job hunt?
Beaver117··on Where have all the laid-off tech workers gone?
It's funny because for 10 years people were saying "get this big company on your resume and you can just walk into any job!"

Clearly not the case anymore

Beaver117··on Where have all the laid-off tech workers gone?
It will be painful to get a 50%+ paycut but I'm willing to accept any job - but like others guessed small companies instantly reject me. I only get interviews with other companies similar to FAANG, only for them to tell me they have a hiring feeeze. Or very early stage startups, like seed or series A, which I'm not comfortable joining.
Beaver117··on Where have all the laid-off tech workers gone?
I can't find another job even with a FAANG background. The market is brutal. Maybe my only choice is to start a startup.
Beaver117··on A student's guide to startups (2006)
Do you think big tech companies will stop paying that much? With the high interest rates I wouldn't be surprised to see the offers drop significantly.

Also as an ex-FAANG engineer laid off, I'm having a lot of trouble finding a new job. I don't think I'll ever reach my old pay again.

So founding a startup is looking more appealing

Beaver117··on Another Round of GitHub Layoffs
Although I personally dislike product people, I recognize the value they have to organizations focused on growth. But when you're facing a recession you probably only need a fraction of them.
Beaver117··on Richard Stallman's thoughts on ChatGPT, AI and their impact on humanity
Maybe a weird question, by why does everyone assume that we will continue to have improvements and GPT-5,6,7,8 will surely "get there"?

Isn't it possible that we've almost reached the limit of this technology and it won't improve much for a very long time? Like self driving cars.

Beaver117··on FDA: Acetaminophen one of the most dangerous drugs on the market
I thought it was the other way around - ibuprofen was generally safer than acetaminaphen
Beaver117··on U.S. home prices are the most unaffordable they've been in nearly 100 years
It's all just a game looking at the charts until the real estate "investment" companies are invaded by thousands of homeless people and the CEOs executed. Are people just supposed to not live anywhere? How long will this last? Just learn from history.
Beaver117··on The TikTok Hearings Inspired Little Faith in Social Media or in Congress
Congress is so out of touch with young people - the actual users of TikTok that I'm surprised there aren't riots in the streets. Why do we let these old geezers control our country?
Beaver117··on Tell HN: We need to push the notion that only open-source LLMs can be “safe”
I'm not very creative but I look forward to seeing what "dangerous" things people will do when the limiters are removed. What's the worst that can happen, it writes some offensive text? Recipes on making dangerous items?
Beaver117··on The kids are not okay
That's what social media encourages. It glamourizes certain lifestyles not among celebrities, but among your own friends.

I'm not sure how to put it but it's a lot easier to be a mean/nasty person online. Or it's just easier to hide that fact in real life.

Beaver117··on The kids are not okay
First of all, TLDR.

I'll give my opinion though. It's not that social media apps are the ones hurting us, they are merely exposing us to the nasty nature of humans. Closing your eyes and not using social media doesn't mean the flow of likes and comments will stop. And likewise shutting down social media doesn't mean we will forget what we had before. The cat is out of the bag, humans will now chase to be the top 1% at everything, money, attractiveness, power, etc. Even without their phones they still have permanently changed their worldview.

I don't see a solution other than perhaps shut down the internet completely. And invest in better mental health coping strategies

Beaver117··on Google releases Bard to a limited number of users in the US and UK
use a vpn?
Beaver117··on Where Are the Missing Gen Z Workers?
Probably at home because inflation made it not worth it to work for low wages?
Beaver117··on Fate/Zero: Fusing Attentions for Zero-Shot Text-Based Video Editing
Cool but why is it named Fate/Zero
Beaver117··on Anyone else witnessing a panic inside NLP orgs of big tech companies?
$500,000 is not a lot after all the inflation we had.

$100,000 in 1970 is worth almost $800,000 today.

Yes, downvote me all you want. But if you're an NLP expert thinking of working for a company that will make billions off your work, you can and should demand millions at least.

Beaver117··on Best printer 2023: just buy this Brother laser printer everyone has, it’s fine
Makes me think, with all the guardrails ChatGPT has the only way to tell the AI apart from a human is how it writes about controversial topics.

Maybe we'll be seeing professional articles dropping more slurs just to prove they were written by a human.

Beaver117··on Was there a tech-hiring bubble? Job postings data suggest so
Nah, they were making those years ago too. 2021 was a much crazier time.
Beaver117··on For every 10% increase in the housing stock, rents decrease 1%
As some like to say, supply and demand. If the market decides a haircut in that location is now $200 instead of $20 then its just the free market working as intended.
Beaver117··on Meta plans to lay off 10k employees
Dear Metamates,

I've had to make some hard decisions, to fire ten thousand of you. But don't worry I take full responsibility for this failure.

Beaver117··on Protecting himself while actively dooming hundreds of startups to failure
No consequences for the rich, as usual. Bring out the guillotines already
Beaver117··on Ask HN: As CFO of SVB what would you have done differently on Wed March 8, 2023?
Kept my mouth shut probably
Beaver117··on Google over-hired talent to do ‘fake work’, claims Keith Rabois
...Yes, they literally rewrote an OS kernel for no reason
Beaver117··on Ask HN: Which stack is as boring (good boring) and cheap in 2023 as PHP?
The answer is PHP or Rails, just like its been the last 10+ years.

Anyone who suggests Go is severely out of touch. It's a great language sure but for a webapp MVP it'll just be a waste of time. I would even doubt any flavor of JS or Python could match what PHP and Rails have done for rapid web development.

I'm not familiar with Laravel but that seems like the natural next thing if you want to use PHP

Beaver117··on It Will Take More Than $60K Salaries to Solve the Teacher Shortage
I think you're saying better education drives higher housing prices, right? But cities generally have high housing prices, so why is the education not as well funded? Why would the money go to rural areas?
Beaver117··on Etsy Delays Seller Payouts Due to Run on Silicon Valley Bank
>Will Roku even lose all of that 25%? Probably not. They won't be able to access it for a while, but in the end they'll probably end up getting at least some of that back.

How will they get it back? The bank is gone. FDIC will only give them $250k right?

Beaver117··on Circle: SVB is 1 of 6 banking partners Circle uses for ~25% part of USDC in cash
And now USDC is unpegged. This is interesting.
Beaver117··on The 24 Hour “Do Nothing” Challenge
Everyone should take some time to do nothing. Even just 30 minutes a week helps. Just sit and think. Or go for a walk, don't bring your phone or anything. Don't go anywhere or talk to anyone, just walk and let your mind wander. You'll be suprised.

And try shrooms :)

Beaver117··on ‘It’s legal, there’s just no precedent’: first US town to demand a rent decrease
And do what? Just sit on it? No, it'll be sold for a lower price to someone who needs a home.
