BasilAwad··on Ask HN: What approach would you take in my situation?
Pawn, don't be a pawn! The only way I could justify him giving you 20% is if he has customers secured. Secured means money in the bank account and not verbal commitments.

And I'm not sure I understand him saying he has more risks. Is he putting more hours selling than you coding? Is he committing capital? Is he quitting his job?

I have a project I'm currently looking for an equal technical co-founder. email me if you're interested.

BasilAwad··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate, and from what?
Man, that's great. I'm guessing the big clients would be news organizations. I would aggressive argue that this should be on their homepage as their updated news feed and then have the timeline move by the hour.
BasilAwad··on Ask HN: Any alt. to recording video in a cross-browser way without using Flash?
thanks
BasilAwad··on Ask HN: Any alt. to recording video in a cross-browser way without using Flash?
this is good to know, but why would it be annoying for my user if I do NPAPI?
BasilAwad··on Ask HN: Apart from Hacker News, what else you read?
Can someone play with the data and report where the HN links are coming from?
BasilAwad··on Ask HN: Any alt. to recording video in a cross-browser way without using Flash?
Thanks, I'm going to resubmit the question in a different way because the new news feed is being flooded with pop tech news.
BasilAwad··on Ask HN: Which project idea should I pursue?
market penetration strategies can be more important than market size.

for example, a smaller market with better acquisition strategies could be better than a larger market with nebulous or not unique acquisition strategies.

BasilAwad··on New version of jobs code
why not just put a tag in place of the up arrow that says (Job) or (Job Ad). That's more intuitive to me (I'm new to HN).
BasilAwad··on Show HN: New platform for finding work - $2000 project minimum
It's not a video contest. It could be just like the YC application videos and the people at CodeYourIdea can screen it to make sure it's just a webcam and nothing car salesmanish. I don't know about other people, but I would appreciate an introvert who could still decently communicate as I would intuitively translate that into intelligence. I get suspicious when the person is a smooth fast talker.

Plus I think the video would be a really big deal for first time solicitors for code projects.

As ridiculous as this sounds, because I'm human. I like to see the face of the lady that makes my coffee and I like to see the face other people as well. I like to see a name on the bottom of emails instead of just the company's. I prefer twitter accounts with an employee representing the company instead of just the company logo.
BasilAwad··on Show HN: New platform for finding work - $2000 project minimum
Plus if there is an exchange of at least $2,000 dollars I would like to at least see your face.
BasilAwad··on Show HN: New platform for finding work - $2000 project minimum
As in racial discrimination? Yeah, I'm sure it will for some. But it's still really useful. For example, I'm sure the videos play a big role in YC applications, although probably not as a first criteria.

Plus it's not like the developers would be talking about something obscure, they would be talking about their core competencies.

the ampersands on the bottom of the page look weird.

You know, having coders or designers submit 30 second videos describing their skills and previous projects is an easy way to differentiate from other freelancing sites. Let non-paying visiters to the site see that as well. I would feel like I was getting a much higher quality batch of bid responses if I was able to see 30 sec videos of developers communicating their skills and previous projects competently in a not reading-off-the-screen way.

Maybe you could get the people asking for bids to submit 30 second videos of themselves too?

BasilAwad··on The Myth of the Three Laws of Robotics - Why We Can't Control Intelligence
sounds biblical. then the robots forget their creator(s).
BasilAwad··on CSS builder for shadows, backgrounds, and borders
great job. Please make more tools.
BasilAwad··on CEOs say California worst place to do business, Texas best
you forgot oil&gas. but hey, we have sxsw.
BasilAwad··on CEOs say California worst place to do business, Texas best
Makes me feel better about staying in Austin as opposed to moving to California. I know there is less talent and risk capital here but UT-Austin is a big school with some great talent. For example, there's a bunch of honors program students that choose UT over other schools for scholarships, proximity to home, and lifestyle. In terms of risk capital, if you can't find an investor in Texas then raise capital in California and come back to Austin :D

What if I want to record. Help please?
BasilAwad··on Colourlovers Raises $1 Million To Make Everyone An Artist
O wow. I've been having fun there and I didn't even know y'all were YC backed. Congrats.
BasilAwad··on Ask HN: Please Review my Web App
I would focus on trying to figure out a way to translate all of those "Happy B-Day" posts on facebook into people giving $1 towards a gift and making that process as seamless as possible. Then I'd call it something like GiftMePlease.com. That's exciting, translating all of those comments into $$$.

Jagira, Wanna spin off a differently branded app called something like CameHomeSafe? I want to target working parents with a product that schedules reminders for their children to answer the question: "Did you you come home safe?" and you already have the functionality with this app. Initially, this was going to be my first app as I am currently learning Rails and this seemed like a simple Twilio-on-Rails exercise. I'm currently based in Houston and I am free for the next 3 months until I move back to UT-Austin for a Masters in Statistics program. I have another startup idea that is a bit harder in functionality that has been my motivation for learning Rails. If you're interested we can talk on skype or first just email me at Basil at my hacker username.
BasilAwad··on Rate my app: 3Things - Complete 3 things a day and live your life
Congrats on launching. From a non-hacker currently learning rails and with a new found respect for developers, respect.

My thing is I'm afraid to log-on, especially with my twitter account. For example, I would never type the 3rd to-do item into a browser! Heck, if I was to type that 3rd to-do item as an intention in an email I would be proof-reading the recipient list like I have OCD.

BasilAwad··on How can I learn to program?
What about e-75 "Building Dynamic Websites"? http://cs75.tv/2010/fall/

I'm in the same boat as the person that posted the original message but I'm currently doing Rails for Zombies (free in-browser interactive course) after first doing tryruby.org (free interactive introduction).

BasilAwad··on Poll: Display points on comments?
How about showing comment points after a set period of time? I can see the value of not showing points on current submissions, but I was frustrated when I was trying to skim older topics.
BasilAwad··on Resources for learning Rails 3
thanks man, good to know someone with a similar background.
BasilAwad··on Resources for learning Rails 3
I just started learning RoR yesterday. Here is what I've done and what I'm planning to do. It would be great to get some validation.

My background: I took intro to C++ in high school six years ago. I wish there was more to say here...

Anyhow, here's what I've done: -TryRuby.org (This is suppose to be a 15-minute quick run to try Ruby in my browser. It took me a bit longer.)

Here's what I'm doing: -Railsforzombies.org (A longer in-browser interactive tutorial, also free)

Here's what I'm planning to do, in no particular order: -Mess around and try to build my rejected YCSummer2011 idea. -http://www.codeschool.com/courses/rails-best-practices (done by same people at RailforZombies, costs $45)

This is my first post to Hacker News. Howdy from Texas.
