BasicObject··on Mars in 4K
This has been posted twice already.
BasicObject··on Hugelkultur: Raised Garden Beds
In my area, they hold native plant sales through the local conservation district. Here is an example: https://kingcd.org/programs/better-backyards/native-bareroot...

I've purchased native trees, scrubs and native flower mixes through them. They seem to be held only once a year but the prices are very reasonable.

BasicObject··on Ask HN: How to take notes?
https://orgmode.org/

It's just incredible how much can be done with it.

BasicObject··on Reuters killed their RSS feeds?
I'm very likely a minority but I only hear about Slack when I'm browsing HN.
BasicObject··on If it ain't broke: Share your oldest working gadgets
I have a ice cream scooper from the 1960's that was used in my grandfather's restaurant. It's built like brick. I also have his hammer that is at least 50 years old. Beautiful wood. His 1970's Robot Coup food processor is still used to this day by my mother. I also still have his Mac SE complete with it's M0116 keyboard and mouse. It's a shame I'm too afraid to resolder the CRT back onto the main board. But that M0116 does still work with an adapter. It's just incredible to me how all these things have kept working after all this time.
BasicObject··on Centralized video conference WebRTC server available for testing
Pardon my ignorance but would this work with an xmpp server?
BasicObject··on Replace GRUB2 with systemd-boot on Ubuntu 18.04 (2018)
So you're saying I can pull an SSD with a working Windows 10 installation from another computer and plug it into a GNU/Linux system running systemd-boot and it will boot Windows 10? (Ignoring any potential driver issues that may arise from the difference in hardware and [most likely] violating the Microsoft EULA)
BasicObject··on RSS feeds for your Github releases, tags and activity
Literally was searching for these less than 24 hours ago. So weird to see a post about it. Thanks for sharing this.
BasicObject··on Windows Subsystem for Linux is making inroads with developers
It hasn't won me over yet. I use it for some pretty basic things too.

BasicObject··on Google working on biz messaging app that unifies Gmail/Hangouts Chat/Meet, more
I miss Google Chat. I miss using it on any platform I wanted. Those were the days. Back when xmpp was in full swing.
BasicObject··on Potted plants do not improve indoor air quality
Thank you for this. I wasn't aware of the filter. I had heard of which plants were most beneficial for the compound they remove and that Kamal recommended growing the plants hydroponically.
BasicObject··on Potted plants do not improve indoor air quality
So these findings contradict Kamal Meattle and the NASA Air Study?

Is the Nitrokey supported? I didn't see it.

BasicObject··on Ask HN: Whats the most kick-ass Linux laptop these days?
Sorry for the delayed response. I'm fairly sure firmware updates happened automatically through update-manager. But at the time I had it set up so I had to initiate all updates so it wouldn't be fully automatic. You can turn them off. That firmware is issue currently resolved. I had to use an external monitor for months. But that glue problem is still there.
BasicObject··on The Crisis for Birds Is a Crisis for Us All
All countries should do what either Australia and/or New Zealand are doing with feral cats. Not saying it will reverse or fix the damage done but it may help save some native bird populations. I read yesterday that feral cats are threatening not just birds but keystone species (like sea otters) in the Pacific Northwest.
BasicObject··on Ask HN: Whats the most kick-ass Linux laptop these days?
I had an XPS 13 DE 9360. Nicest laptop I've ever used at first anyway. Fast (enough), thin, light, pre-installed gnu/linux, all day battery life, beautiful 3k screen. But something really annoyed me. After awhile the rubber strips on the bottom of it started to peel off and the glue leaked onto the table, desk or my lap! There was also an issue with firmware updates where the screen would black out after a firmware update. This happened a few times and was eventually why I quit using it. I didn't want to play roulette on my main machine so I had to find something different. Sad because that was one amazing laptop.
BasicObject··on Tax Policy Gave Us White Claw
Slightly related: I tried to buy an expensive used camera from one of my favorite online retailers from New York and discovered that used electronics were now being taxed. They lost a big sale yesterday.
BasicObject··on Empress trees absorb about 103 tons of carbon a year per acre
Is there something similar in freshwater? A carbon capturing plant like kelp in lakes?
BasicObject··on About the “Security Issue” on VLC
I wanted to thank you for your work on VLC as well. It has been my go to video player for many years.
BasicObject··on New York state has banned cat declawing
Care to explain why? Just curious.
BasicObject··on New York state has banned cat declawing
It's so sad you're being downvoted because you're right. Cats are destroying many of the world's ecosystems and cats owners and stray feeders are to blame.
BasicObject··on Cats Kill Billions of Animals a Year
Glad this is getting more press.
BasicObject··on Researchers strapped video cameras on cats and let them do their thing
This method may be helpful studying how destructive domesticated cats are to local ecosystems.
