BashiBazouk··on Reddit Gives Final Warning to Subreddits Using NSFW Protest Tactic
I think they are intentionally trying to change what communities are on Reddit. It was a throw away quote at the tail end of one of the many stores during the protest but it has given me pause as to whether I want to participate on reddit going forward:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/reddit-ceo-slams-pro...

"Huffman said, though, that he’d like to see some form of revenue-sharing.

“I would like subreddits to be able to be businesses if they choose,” he said, adding that’s “another conversation, but I think that’s the next frontier of Reddit.”

BashiBazouk··on ‘I don’t want to become San Francisco’: Urban woes spur state action on housing
Older generation, eh?

Is San Francisco's tourist industry "Older generation"?

The house I owned was in the Sunset, so pardon me if I don't agree with your assessment of the west side of the city. I have watched property prices since the seventies always go up. My parents bought a house in Santa Cruz for $16,000 and sold for $28,000 and thought they made a killing in real estate. The hippy generation happened in the Haight Ashbury because no one could afford North Beach and they still all had roommates. Of course communes were cool at the time, but still. Anything with an ocean view between the Ferry Building and the Presidio, especially if on a hill, has been unaffordable for decades. Other than momentary blips due to earthquakes and deep financial downturns, property prices have always gone up. Some the greatest jumps in property prices happened during the gold rush. Has the city really changed or do not know enough history of the city to understand that it has always been like this?

BashiBazouk··on ‘I don’t want to become San Francisco’: Urban woes spur state action on housing
I doubt it. I owned a house in SF. For me it was looking at the city. I grew up in the bay area and have been going to SF since the 70's. San Francisco is a beautiful city. Architecturally fantastic. In the 60's, 70's and 80's there were waves of mass fast building of apartment units and much of it is really, really ugly. I would not like to see San Francisco go in another ugly direction just so people can say they have an SF address. Further, I just felt the city could not take a boom in population. Public transportation, road usage already felt maxed out. There is a delusion that if they make owning a car expense and difficult, enough people will abandon the idea of owning a car to make it work. You could call me highly skeptical on that front, especially the Bay Area where a car is just so useful even if public transportation is used to get to work.

Another thing is looking at single cities rather than the entire metro areas. San Jose is first and San Francisco second. Where would Manhattan and Brooklyn be on the list if Queens and the Bronx were not there to bring the numbers down? Workers need affordable housing but I'm not convinced they need to be in specific arbitrary lined off areas rather than in the greater metro area with reasonable commute time to work...

BashiBazouk··on Pre-Digital Font Tech: Formatt
I worked with type like this back in the day. The burnish type reproduced much cleaner than this stuff. The big problem with the acetate was the edges. Some would reflect light and require quite a bit of touch up once the negatives were made. The other problem was the background was not a pure white so a longer exposure was required which would sometimes mess up the carefully created halftones. When the first laser printers came out they were 300 dpi and not really good enough for serious use in printing but the type in this article were a time consuming pain for anything beyond a headline and photo typesetting was very expensive. We used to have the graphic artist print out at double the size they wanted to use it (or as big as possible) then reduce it down on a process camera as a hack to make the laser printers a viable replacement until the resolution caught up a few years later.

My step grandfather was a letter pressman who had a studio in his home after he retired from the Grabhorn press in San Francisco. His idea of a font was a large box of drawers on wheels packed full of metal type.

BashiBazouk··on Reddit makes it impossible to delete PII, refuses to do it itself violating GDPR [video]
Digg was bought out for the name and is a news aggregate site without comments.

I'm trying to like Lemmy but it really needs a data dense "old.lemmy" interface. I doubt I'll stick with it...

BashiBazouk··on Reddit makes it impossible to delete PII, refuses to do it itself violating GDPR [video]
Nothing, really? I've been following "popular" and it's all low quality rage bate and reposts. New stories are molasses slow in showing up, the same stories will be there the next day or even the day after rather than a few hours. The subs I follow are mostly ghost towns. I'm thinking the research for your article is sub-par...

On the other hand, if you ever want to karma whore, this is your moment. The most bottom of the barrel submissions are getting crazy karma.

BashiBazouk··on Oregon finally legalizes pumping your own gas
I'm with you. Moved up from California half a decade ago and I don't think I've ever self pumped gas into my current car and I thoroughly enjoy that fact. The only time I've encountered lines is once in a blue moon, the station just happens to be busy (less often than California) or at Costco...
BashiBazouk··on Lemmy stats (users, posts, nodes, comments)
Odd. I think it might be something else. I've been lurking Lemmy as I decide what to do about reddit and have not noticed any unusual loading times. The page linked to above takes two seconds to load (the spinny things stop turning and the data is given) for me. Literally, a 1-1000, 2-1000 and it's up...
BashiBazouk··on Reddit CEO Says Mods Too Powerful, Plans to Weaken After Blackout
Well, according to: https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/reddit-ceo-slams-pro...

"Huffman said, though, that he’d like to see some form of revenue-sharing.

“I would like subreddits to be able to be businesses if they choose,” he said, adding that’s “another conversation, but I think that’s the next frontier of Reddit.”

You may not be far off...

BashiBazouk··on Have you been to the library lately?
In Canada, maybe. Santa Cruz, California on the other hand had plenty of homelessness all through the 70's...
BashiBazouk··on Reddit’s blackout protest is set to continue indefinitely
The base Lemmy site does allow that. It looks like every button should lead to sign up dialogs but doesn't. Just select a serer, then join a server, hit communities at the top and select all in the green menu. I don't know if it shows you everything but it does give many pages of topics and what server they are on.

The interface is not up to old.reddit standards but better than the modern reddit interface. I like that because there many servers, any popular topic will have a bunch of subs to choose from. Seems a bit sparse with subscriber numbers per community but if that grows, I could see it scratching the reddit itch...

BashiBazouk··on Reddit’s blackout protest is set to continue indefinitely
Ya, I figured that out when I decided to give it a go and sign up. It takes two screens that look like one needs to sign up (just about everywhere else on the net would require it with a similar screen) but then it lets you pick a server without signing up. There is a big improvement they could implement: make it more obvious with less screens that you can browse without logging in...
BashiBazouk··on Reddit’s blackout protest is set to continue indefinitely
The problem with the Fediverse as it currently stands is it goes against my long time use of forums. I'm usually only logged in on a desktop where I would post comments from. Most of my reading happens on pad, mobile or work where I have little desire to log in and in the case of a work computer I refuse to log in to anything personal. Kind of defeats the purpose of the whole thing...
BashiBazouk··on The Reddit blackout has left Google barren and full of holes
If it's perceived as profitable or core to the business, the latter more likely, I would not be surprised if quite a few companies try their hand at a reddit like endeavor. I hold out hope that who ever owns slashdot would add user generated categories and integrate the meta moderation system to keep check on the volunteer mods that it would require...
BashiBazouk··on The Reddit blackout has left Google barren and full of holes
I would think they would treat it like youtube and allow it to lose money, at least at first, in order to support their core business.
BashiBazouk··on The Reddit blackout has left Google barren and full of holes
If it's this important to google, couldn't they just buy Reddit with what amounts to pocket change? That would be an interesting plot twist...
BashiBazouk··on Apollo’s Christian Selig explains his fight with Reddit – and why users revolted
I think there are a lot of people wondering if the "even more user-hostile changes" are a loss of old.reddit. I knew of 3d party apps but none by name until this most recent incident as I am fine with old.reddit but the behavior of the CEO does make me concerned. I can't tell if he was just channeling his inner Elon and being a pompous ass or if Reddit is as desperate financially as his AMA made it seem. If the latter, I would not be surprised if old.reddit was shut down.
BashiBazouk··on Killing Community
Reddit seems to be dying for me for completely different reasons. Meme dependency for lack of a better word. Not the images with one liners though there are an annoying amount of those as well, but a standardized repetitiveness of responses to any input that tend to linger toward the top of the thread if sorted by best. This is much more prevalent in threads off r/popular or r/all than smaller subreddits, but as an example, any rape or sexual assault story on r/news or r/politics will always have the Brock Turner SEO peppering within the top five threads, sometime multiple. Any Trump thread will have the long, long list of misdeeds with links and then some one liners that the wording has become standardized. This then extends in to related subreddits where the meme pops up when the triggering subject is talked about.

It just becomes so boring and predictable.

BashiBazouk··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
From reading the transcript it reads to me that Reddit says Apollo is costing them $20 mil a year from lost opportunity cost, which I take to mean advertising/tracking et? The Apollo dev seems skeptical of that cost and is jokingly suggesting that if they cut him a $10 mil check, they can make it up in 6 months purely from getting that "opportunity" back with the added benefit Apollo just disappears.

I look at less of a threat and more of a calling the bluff...

BashiBazouk··on Was modern art a CIA psy-op? (2020)
That was well covered in Tom Wolfe's The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. At least the "make LSD popular" part.
BashiBazouk··on Salvador Dalí is the most faked artist?
They kept running editions off the original wood plates but the plates slowly wear and because of that colors changed from edition to edition. My father bought a 3rd edition print in the 60's when he was in the navy stationed in Japan. It's a bit muted, especially in the sky compared to the first runs I have seen in museums.
BashiBazouk··on Pinball is booming in America
Growing up in Santa Cruz during peak arcade, the casino at the boardwalk was one of the best. Not only did they have just about all the arcade video games but also an incredibly deep pinball collection for when you needed something else. My favorite was a pinball machine with a baseball theme that was from the 30's. Most the antique pinball are no longer on the floor but they used to have such a cool collection that you could play.
BashiBazouk··on It Wasn't AI
My wife started teaching a class at the local university. She had a bunch of positives on the anti-plagiarism software used by the university. She ran a bunch of papers by me and man, analyzing the results are an art within it's self. People will unconsciously remember and write down phrases and smaller sentences they have read all the time. A little highlight here and there just has to be accepted. Then there are the papers that almost the entire thing is highlighted. It's the ones in between that are tricky as hell. A lot could have gone either way and it's a judgement call on the teacher whether to send it to the administration for review. I expect AI will just make it more difficult or hand writing is going to be the new hot subject taught to new levels in elementary...
BashiBazouk··on I Make Deepfakes: How to Keep Yourself Safe
It's likely a self solving problem. Through AI we are adding tons of fake information to the net. We will get to the point that a picture or video alone won't be definitive proof of anything. There will have to be back up evidence that it is real. I think a way to protect yourself from deepfakes is to go the opposite route and deepfake yourself. Make sure there are images out there that are provably fake, that way if one does come around that is not of your own making, you can point to a history of being deepfaked and be able to easily dismiss it.
BashiBazouk··on Electronic Music and the NeXTcube – Running Max on the Ircam Musical Workstation
We had MAX on the macs at the computer art lab at San Jose State. We mainly used it to control peripherals in art installations and projects. It was such a cool program but too expensive, protected and obscure to be cracked. Sort of the anti-photoshop of it's day and my personal example of how to not market software.
BashiBazouk··on Alternative facts: How the media failed Julian Assange
As opposed to your pro-WL propaganda that is blatantly false? Yes, what you describe is how I and I think many others generally viewed wikileaks up to 2016. With the DNC email leak, that changed:

https://www.theregister.com/2016/07/22/wikileaks_keep_fighti...

One example news story of many...

As to the RNC hack, I never said wikileaks had anything but the RNC was hacked and whatever was found was never released by the hacking organization. Whether this is intentional or just because what was found was not interesting or too old to matter, just the story circulating added to the perception wikileaks had changed.

BashiBazouk··on Alternative facts: How the media failed Julian Assange
I thought the disillusionment around here with wikileaks had more to do with the way they had changed from careful curation, removing the personal information of those not involved, to just bulk dumps. Less that Hillary's emails were leaked and more that the personal information of lesser figures in and donors to the DNC were also released in mass. They had changed in perception from journalism to personal revenge against Hillary for her pursuing Assange as Secretary of State. The fact that the RNC had been hacked but emails not released helped in this perception...
BashiBazouk··on More students are turning away from college and toward apprenticeships
I don't subscribe to college as primarily a way to pump out worker bees. People should have access to learning beyond that to which ends only in employment. Cut the bloated administration, figure out how to lower costs and tailor to different learning models and schedules. Make it affordable and not to difficult to register for those in the community who are post college or post college age to take classes. Don't be afraid to teach trades. Adapt.
BashiBazouk··on Reddit has been down for more than an hour
I miss kuro5hin and if we are going back in history, Plastic as well.
BashiBazouk··on Reddit has been down for more than an hour
Some sort of meta moderation of subreddit moderators could be such an improvement over there if well implemented... I miss the old slashdot system as well.
