BartSaM··on How alcohol industry organisations mislead the public about alcohol and cancer
Everyone is different. I also prefer just stop, but not everyone has will power to do so.
BartSaM··on Atlassian launches Stride, its Slack competitor
Afaik there are enough chats that cater for that. I understand emojis, but gif support is not necessary for a business chat app. At least not in all of them.
BartSaM··on European court rules companies must tell employees of email checks
This is not about the right of an employer to check email, this is about the right of an employee to know about it.
BartSaM··on “Google: it is time to return to not being evil”
Closed source sometimes is better than an open source. With open source code, certain agencies can find exploits and use them to track every move you make, months and years before anyone spotted it. With closed source, you have more chance, at least if you believe in humans, that you will stay anonymous.

But to be honest, as soon as such company would go public, get major funding from one of the big companies, or get a new, famous CEO - run away.

BartSaM··on Tell me what your company does
Sounds like new MySpace business plan.
BartSaM··on The Nuclear Potato Cannon, Part 2 (2006)
This story is surfacing every few months on many major outlets. The story itself is fun, but the fact that it often tries to "prove" that the US was first in space without any proof is misinformation. A lot of non-technical people will take this story and pass it as a fact.
BartSaM··on The Nuclear Potato Cannon, Part 2 (2006)
For me, this story, showing up here and there, is to discredit Russian Space Program in some part.

There are so many unknowns...

Do we even know if Russian had a situation like this with their nuclear tests? Most data is classified anyway, so how can we know?

This is not science, this is just "we cannot find a part that could have to reach the space".

BartSaM··on You Can’t Block Mark Zuckerberg or Priscilla Chan on Facebook
Respect to the QZ for showing "profiles likely to get blocked often", using examples of both Donald and Hilary. This is an example of neutral reporting.
BartSaM··on Candy Japan total sales cross $1M
This is a social responsibility. Most European countries do this, Canada does this. While not perfect, the system works. It is exposed to any other warfare system to cheaters, but I would say on a much smaller scale than unemployment benefits for example.
BartSaM··on Candy Japan total sales cross $1M
Yes. It is $50. Private insurance company. One of the largest in the world.
BartSaM··on Candy Japan total sales cross $1M
I am paying $50 for a single person per month for premium health insurance, no lines service, priority entry, private cliniques, private hospitals, accident insurance, over 200 diseases included, free checkups, worldwide coverage, up to 6 months in a hospital during the year covered, money payments for each accident/sickness that forced me to the hospital, emergency transportation, blood tests etc. on demand and so on, and so on. I love Europe.
BartSaM··on Can we know what animals are thinking?
And my answer to this is the same as above.
BartSaM··on Can we know what animals are thinking?
While I partly agree I do not suppose all of sudden 50% of society will turn in to food like this.

This is a solution to all the people that have a problem with the evil food industry. There is enough for everyone. What I am saying, there are more than two options. Also, if more people would eat such a products and prices would rise a bit, I bet a lot of people would start using their unused farm land for such a purpose.

Also, I think it would lead to new "Amazon for farmer products" start-up arising.

BartSaM··on Can we know what animals are thinking?
While I agree with some parts, the overall message sounds like a pseudoscience.

Only because you have negative feelings toward some people and some actions - you cannot compare this to the whole society. The problem is with the system that allows bad people to be in power. Not with the society in general.

While the world is not in the best shape, it is not a disaster as well. Show me any other invasive species that will on purpose creating areas, where animals, with no use to us, are protected and can live freely.

Your message literally categorizes all people, even the good ones. Apocalyptic thinking like that can do only bad, not good. I would suggest for you to look at the good things that we do as well. Center your position a bit and hear both sides of the story.

As of not eating meat. There are ways to eat meat that is not from the "cruel industry". Supporting small, local farmers can help the local community and allow you to eat healthily and animals that have roamed freely and enjoyed their lives. But this requires doing some research, driving and time, which people do not want to sacrifice.

BartSaM··on Whatruns: Identify technologies used on any website
They do not need to worry about websites and CDN's that would mark their spiders as such. They get free scrapers thanks to that.
BartSaM··on Why I Still Use Vim
I have tried Atom once and I am using Brackets since then. I have not found a better tool yet. It is easy to use, great plugins and no issues with resources for me (10-15 files open at any given time, and 1-2000 files indexed). There is so many editors, that Atom is just an option, not a standard.
BartSaM··on Google's stance on neo-Nazis 'dangerous', says EFF
Cool, so they have a neo-nazi stance. This is the anti extreme-right stance. Will we see stance anti extreme-left as well? Antifa etc?

We need a real balance, otherwise, we are pushing the world towards the war.

BartSaM··on Essential Phone, available now
And no SD card support, which is a deal breaker for many people.
BartSaM··on Netflix Plans to Spend $7B on Content in 2018
This is really very hard to fix the problem. So you have unsubscribed because there are too much media to digest available? You must be an extreme minority with a problem like that.
BartSaM··on Dung Beetles Navigate via the Milky Way
I am on HN since many years, a user just recently. I was not implying that HN turns in to Reddit. I was implying that this comment is worthy Reddit, not HackerNews - a professional website that strives to hold on to some standards.

I have read the guidelines. Really.

BartSaM··on Show HN: One hostname to rule them all
I, and I suppose a lot of people, give between 3-5 seconds to tell me what it does. If I am not able to find a reference to anything within this time - I will close the tab. I have scrolled whole website looking for one headline or enlarged text with one sentence explanation of what this is.

Once I failed I turned in to HN comments.

UX on this website is awful, but it has a possibility to be an amazing one. Just a few small changes and people will link to this page as an example of UI. But for now is pretty bad.

BartSaM··on Dung Beetles Navigate via the Milky Way
Is this Reddit now?
BartSaM··on Investigating a ten-year-old estimate that “most social programmes don’t work”
I do not see it would happen on a large scale. Those work-to-benefit could work on things, that local government cannot afford or are not planning to do. Even cleaning wild areas which are a serious problem in some parts of woods for example. Or cleaning beaches, or planting trees in remote areas. There are those things that simply are hard to achieve when you are tight on a budget already.
BartSaM··on Investigating a ten-year-old estimate that “most social programmes don’t work”
This is another contradictory to what I said.

I said working for public good - not supermarkets etc. Working in public spaces for community benefit. That is a huge difference. Why should someone on benefits work for a private business or even public offices? That is ridiculous! They are receiving public help, they should help the public.

There is absolutely no place for the nanny state. Try not to look at things black/white.

BartSaM··on Investigating a ten-year-old estimate that “most social programmes don’t work”
You are going extreme on me now.

I did not say "lazy guys won't work".

I said a lot of people would love to work for their benefits. I have been in this situation and hated. And I know a lot of pride people, that would not take free money.

I have not said this is a solution to everything.

I said, this would be a good thing and additionally should be put in the Constitution ("right to work").

I think there should be multiple social programs and people should be able to choose ones.

Programs that are performing best should get more funds, the ones that are the worst should be removed.

BartSaM··on Investigating a ten-year-old estimate that “most social programmes don’t work”
I would love to see more work-for-benefits programs. Where you are required to do some labour work for the community (cleaning wild areas, swiping side walks, planting trees etc.) in exchange for some better than average benefits. IMO everyone should be entitled to such a work. This way we would eliminate involuntary extreme poverty.
BartSaM··on Why Germans pay cash for almost everything
Not really. Debit cards are debit cards, not cash. You are comparing CC to DC as far as I can tell, but they are completely different products. There is a huge difference between having currency in your hand or use a medium to access money held by the private organization that can go bankrupt (and this happens much more often than, for example, governments with their currencies).
BartSaM··on New York’s Subways Are Not Just Delayed, Some Trains Don’t Run at All
In current ecosystem, with so many politicians promising golden eggs, price rise will almost never end up in the decrease.

Also, you are taxing the poorest. I think they struggle enough. You could start selling premium services though.

BartSaM··on Martin Shkreli is found guilty of securities fraud
The issue with this is that I often think of a people, that are not following media (so would not know him at all), to be usually more on a conservative note with strong values. If such a people would meet Shkreli, they would send him straight to the jail.
BartSaM··on Grandpa Had a Pension. This Generation Has Cryptocurrency
I would say violent, but volatile as well. Violent in the meaning of the market lack of regulation causes it to be potent on to manipulators and power houses with tools to wipe out market value in a blink of an eye, attack targets and act when they could quickly benefit.
