I hear much of what happens there is from PMs who want promotions, which makes me wonder if a goal (like interorg alignment) could be met by freezing their promotions until they Google Meet together & hash it out.

I’m reducing into silliness I’m sure, I don’t have any breadth or depth of knowledge here.

Edit: wonder why Apple is ostensibly different. MS seems similar, and don’t know enough about AWS—maybe I’ve seen complaints about them being disjointed, but not as much as Google & Microsoft.

I wonder how many prompts you can send asking it to think step-by-step before they cut you off. Trying to get the reasoning traces into the body of the response, essentially. Or maybe that’s been effectively nerfed somehow. Or is not very useful.

I guess it’s assuming the fact ChatGPT is a household name will bring it near permanent relevancy? I’m skeptical.

And sorry to the parent commenter if I’m making a bad assumption.

Incredible!!! Wow, is this apparent extraordinary cost discrepancy anybody’s fault, or is that just how it has to be?
Barbing··on Transit rewards
Blew my mind when I learned that about Caltrain. I thought tickets felt a little expensive, then I learned what it really should cost.

You know subsidy per train passenger mile?

West Oakland to Embarcadero is great: 7min BART, or 45-60(+) at rush hour on the bridge. No better timesave that I know of with BART.
Barbing··on What California is learning from solar panels built over irrigation canals
Yes, this is why “death penalty for everything“ wouldn’t suddenly eliminate crime.

I’ve heard in some places it’s hard to keep light bulbs in stairwells.

California’s tried cracking down on catalytic converter theft with significant measures. (I think a legitimate scrapyard would have to do a bunch of paperwork to buy a cat.) Anyone know the outcomes?

Yikes, that’s too bad. Have had two incredibly easy chargeback experiences (lifetime).

Can’t speak to fraudulent bank charges, by the way, only on the credit card side.

Neat! Had to loginwall curation today?

Does it re-curate for everybody every time? Would be interesting if it were a little more like the Wayback machine (if somebody already curated, just show that set of curated comments), with a prompt like archive.today (“this thread curated X hours/N comments ago—re-curate?“)

Same country at least - the iCloud Private Relay options, iOS:

“1: Maintain general location

2: Use country and time zone

Maintain your general location to receive localized content, or enhance your privacy by using a broader IP address based on your country and time zone.

Safari Private Browsing always uses an IP location from your country and time zone.”

In USA, folks who check their statements monthly are at little risk of immediate financial pain there.

When your lifetime of credit card transactions leaks, that could be financially painful, embarrassing, etc. (can be discriminated against, including with pricing)

I do dislike creating a log of where I park on some random company’s server. Nice that ALPRs/govt.-funded corp spycams/Ring/etc. make sure the quarter method is minimally marginally effective at protecting privacy.

Nice. Someone made a site to notify for updates when you have that subdomain blocked.

https://github.com/travisvn/stop-tahoe-update/issues/19#issu...

This was after Apple broke the trick to prevent Tahoe update nags.

Barbing··on What happened to the Snowden archive
Some junky news site claimed nine, but saw eleven and thirteen more widely reported. Read some JMail but didn’t dig into the files beyond that. Sick stuff, respect to those whose jobs demand they closely follow everything.

> Seems Epstein was a more commonplace sleazy creep into young prostitutes getting him into age of consent trouble in some states but not others.

Age of consent is eleven in which states?

Barbing··on What happened to the Snowden archive
IIRC he tried to find people he could trust to redact in a way that would protect US national security interests.

Rather tragic that less-technical folks in positions of power can find this:

> You can't make backdoors only the "good guys" can access.

incomprehensible. I’m sure genuinely so, even.

Ding ding, right!

Obviously, the move is to continuously put your finger on the scale rather than doing something blatantly potentially illegal (depending on the threat).

There would have to be some meat on the bone, some unilateral NDA kind of thing…

We all should’ve heard of it by now. From Lobsters, Mastodon, blogs…

>The mods are much … quicker to intimidate/threaten

They’re doing this privately? Normally you shouldn’t screenshot emails/DMs/texts sure, but please do in this case. I have showdead on in Settings, so I should see it if you’re worried about censorship. If someone’s posted this before and it was deleted and not just killed, raise your hand and I’ll add my email to my profile.

Offer open to all. Obviously I’m doubting these guys are threatening people…

I look when I comment on something that suddenly disappears from the front page.

> intimidate/threaten

Links to examples?

I see “please stop fulminating” “we’ve asked you not to do this [guideline violating behavior] and we’ll have to ban you if you keep it up”, which is gentler than [shadow]banning even with the ‘threat’ of punitive action. Assuming you’ve seen mod comments I’ve missed.
