BandButcher··on Show HN: I made a website for searching police scanner transcripts
excellent, keep it up
BandButcher··on Show HN: I made a website for searching police scanner transcripts
bookmarked! sweet app

are you doing this real time or in a batch mode/daily scrape?

personally it would be useful to maybe subscribe to key words and get notifications for specific cities

BandButcher··on Ask HN: What are the next gen web technologies coming up?
plugging https://freedombox.org/

personally have not used but glad things like this exist

BandButcher··on How Airbnb Smoothly Upgrades React
cosign, I'm more of an angular dev, but my last job was heavy on migrations... by the time you complete one major version migration across ALL repos/libs/deps and mitigate the remaining prod issues, a newer version comes out and you press reset.

it seems that software has taken on the marketing of hardware. just like we've come to expect a "new" iphone every year, we expect a new framework version every year, regardless of any major improvements that justify the effort.

i get how the microservice/microfront-end architecture makes these updates painful so you want to be mindful of not getting too far behind LTSs but i think being on the latest version just to be on it has become pure bragging rights for most tech companies.

BandButcher··on Why is it so hard to share links on LinkedIn?
lol which is funny because i think twitter updated their post rankings to boost those with images/links...but i guess that makes sense considering twitter is mostly text-based trying hard not to get left behind the other more video/media-centric socials like tiktok.

edit: maybe not links but just media

BandButcher··on Panic at the Job Market
so much this, I applied recently to a tech company which gave me 2 questions to complete within an hour.

I knew the solution to the first was the min-cut algorithm, but no way I could code it straight up and down let alone in ~30min. Plus these leetcode-esque questions always come with millions of test cases making the need to be 100% exact and double check the constraints.

I even had my data structures/algo book nearby on the shelf that I could've used to cheat this but that would've been a new low for me, especially considering this was for a "mid"-level position working on APIs/JS/SQL.

I can understand if you want me to be an algorithm specialist but for web development for what im assuming would be a run of the mil SaaS application... this is absurd.

BandButcher··on Azure DevOps is down globally
I remember something with facebook? where their internal DNS was misconfigured.

edit:

"This change caused a complete disconnection of our server connections between our data centers and the internet. And that total loss of connection caused a second issue that made things worse. "

https://engineering.fb.com/2021/10/05/networking-traffic/out...

https://blog.cloudflare.com/october-2021-facebook-outage/

https://www.thousandeyes.com/blog/facebook-outage-analysis

Not sure if MS is going through the same issue but DNS could be a reason why

BandButcher··on Azure DevOps is down globally
"Big Paper and Pencil" can thank the recent MS and CDK Global hacks for making writing fashionable again
BandButcher··on Collection of Dark Patterns and Unethical Design
yea surprised the examples within the dark pattern cards weren't affiliate links so OP could score ad revenue ;)
BandButcher··on Spotify is launching a comment section for podcasts
imo this is too little too late, idk who was driving the podcast feature at spotify but i don't understand how they wouldn't roll this out sooner if not at launch of their recent "exclusive" podcast acquisitions (i.e. rogan). It just seems like an obvious engagement addition.

i understand maybe the fear of having to moderate comments, but that problem still exists now.

BandButcher··on Vertical-Align: All You Need to Know (CSS) (2014)
same experience for me, but cool breakdown and i dig the UX of the page
BandButcher··on Polyfill supply chain attack hits 100K+ sites
sadly everyone has a price, its pretty much tech real estate

many js devs have used that on their resumes/portfolio - "I own a 10-line library downloaded over 1 billion times!"

^^ pretty easy target to poach github accounts for mass malware spreading.

BandButcher··on Polyfill supply chain attack hits 100K+ sites
I would still (and do) do both, in the case that your site (for whatever reason) is still under/or simply accessible to HTTP, then a man in the middle attack could still happen and replace your script with another.

For self hosted dynamic scripts, I just add a task in my build process to calc the sha and add it to the <src integrity="sha..." >

Otherwise just calc it and hardcode it once for 3rd party, legacy scripts...

BandButcher··on Polyfill supply chain attack hits 100K+ sites
lmao you jogged a memory in my brain... in my senior final semester in college, our professor had us agree to the IEEE Code of Ethics:

https://www.computer.org/education/code-of-ethics

In retrospect I can say I've held up for the most part, but in some cases have had to quit certain jobs due to overwhelming and accelerating nonsense.

usually its best for your mental well to just shut up and get paid ;)

BandButcher··on AI dev startups are struggling with one problem and I solved it
Once they have this graph, do you offer some other service to read/view it?

Or better yet, Is the graph your API returns in a standardized AI (idk if one exists tbh) or open source graph model (e.g. DAG)?

Kudos for solving this problem if you truly did, best of luck going forward!

I will say i highly doubt most companies will be willing to send you entire source code zips vs a more established company. My advice would be to focus more on the on-prem now instead of a future development effort

BandButcher··on What's New in Kotlin 2.0.0
I would advocate for this. If your codebase is low in complexity then I think it would be wise to invest engineering time towards kotlin training. I've taken several courses on pluralsight and they get you up to speed quickly but informatively.

Also if you place kotlin in high regards or believe it saves you time/money as opposed to java (as i do too) then why not train java devs on kotlin and introduce them to a low complexity app before high complexity sets in (potentially)

BandButcher··on Ask HN: Is 'Fake Work' a Result of Poor Management?
From my experience every management leader has a (usually multiple) "OKR" or "quarterly goals" that sometimes are just a straw grab or items passed down from someone else. "Who can we give the migration project that has been in the works for 3yrs now?... Just give it to Tammy and her team she only has 3 current projects and the rest of the leaders all have 5!"

And so Tammy's team now has to do this "important" migration project which is low priority and typically busy work. BUT the company is reeeeally counting on tammy and her team to deliver!

Majority of the time there are real projects the company cares about but they only account for a small majority of the "resources". So the non important projects are still under OKRs and hyped up to the actual engineering teams as being important but in reality its just a check mark for end of year performance reviews.

I was an engineer doing this "fake work" for a while and it can be soul draining pushing a stone up a mountain and everyone on the team realizing it...

For sure innovation can happen where fake work gets eliminated but typically you have to back those initiatives around dollar values and convince the upper execs that it'll be profitable which is tough and why most managers accept whatever goals/projects land their way, thus churning the fake work machine

BandButcher··on Show HN: A portfolio website simulating a 90s Unix computer using React
Wicked site, love the concept
BandButcher··on Ask HN: Lost 10-year-old Google Voice number due to policy change, any recourse?
Not knocking the business phone setup, but if all the Google voice number is used for is lead generation to then forward to your main business line, then couldn't any other g voice number work to generate leads? Do you advertise that number anywhere and if so would it be feasible to just update it?

Also, wouldn't existing customers be using your official business number after converting from leads?

I hope you can get it back but I'm also not sure this will affect your wife's business all that much, imo it would lead to more spam calls shrug

BandButcher··on EV Charging Points in America Are Finally Making Money
Are you saying that because tesla connectors make for higher availability/usage?
BandButcher··on How annoying is building a good website navigation?
To me navigation and search are different things but usually placed atop a website (typical of e-commerce and SaaS products) on the "nav bar" (in html semantics by using a <nav> element)

I would first ask customer support what the biggest struggle for users currently is.

Are there too many options in the nav bar making users overwhelmed? Maybe consolidating categories is best?

Or is it that when they click a link on the nav bar they get redirected to an inappropriate page that isn't what they thought it would lead them to? Or is it the search capabilities not giving good results? What widespread implications are you thinking of? Did you basically do a complete rewrite or UI overhaul and worried users wont like it?

BandButcher··on An all-optical general-purpose CPU and optical computer architecture
Don't have time to read it all but the abstract states,

"With our research, however, we are focused on the phase thereafter. Once optical interconnects and interposers have been fully established and are the main mode of inter-chip and intra-chip communication, solving the 6× inefficiencies... "

Therefore this paper is more about a computer architecture that will be in place AFTER general purpose hardware swaps from electrical to photonic communication, but we aren't there yet. Also seems the paper is more about tackling the next phase of `energy efficiency` problems that will arise after the swap.

Still useful info to consider but i agree with most here that these click-bait titles in research are abused. But I can't really argue it got me to click ;)

BandButcher··on Google brings Stack Overflow's knowledge base to Gemini for Google cloud
How come they get to talk to the customer that way and not me lol

these are literally questions I've given to project managers to help create better requirements but ultimately as a dev you have to come up with "something" regardless and redo the work once the customer complains. Stupid GPTs cutting the line!

BandButcher··on Google brings Stack Overflow's knowledge base to Gemini for Google cloud
I mean we already have that with social media posts getting phantom likes and bot comments to give the appearance of "engagement". You know the same playbook will unfold when the CEOs want the numbers or perceived value to go up.
BandButcher··on Google brings Stack Overflow's knowledge base to Gemini for Google cloud
Well the least they could do imo would be to post or comment that a question is a duplicate of another or link to the top voted answer. Similar to how users on HN post links to "on going discussion threads" for duped posts. Its grunt work that these bots should at least be able to regurgitate or find easily.

Also theres a chance these LLMs have access to other tech forums in addition to stack overflow and could possibly provide a solution. For example GitHub has actually been the better source for me when debugging issues. Usually you can go to the repo and search the issues and read comments with solutions or workarounds.

But aside from that i am in agreeance with you that these bots will struggle to provide new, non regurgitated answers and could potentially cause more harm than good

BandButcher··on Is Tableau Dead?
Haha funny hearing the other side of the story to this, i was a front end dev during the tableu peak who helped create several custom dashboards in JavaScript...for multiple different companies!

I worked on so many that eventually i came to hate making them lol, data viz can be extremely subjective and you get into weird paradigms of how much data viz you display vs user actions on that snapshot of data (ex. viewing details, exporting to diff formats, printing the dashboard with no cut-offs, manually refreshing stale data vs auto refresh)

BandButcher··on Amazon Ion: typed superset of JSON
Hmmm... Idk if this is overkill or not. I see the value in including more complex data types to a json-like structure but the js language wouldn't really consume them that way, which is why i guess they created the ion-js lib and other server side implementations.
BandButcher··on JavaScript Bloat in 2024
Don't want to hate on the author's post but the screenshots being slow to load made me chuckle, understandable as images can be big and there were a lot, but just found it a little ironic.
BandButcher··on JavaScript Bloat in 2024
Was going to mention this, almost any company's brand site will have tracking and analytics libraries set in place. Usually to farm marketing and UX feedback.

Whats worse is some of them are fetched externally rather than bundled with the host code thus increasing latency and potential security risks
