BadJo0Jo0··on Show HN: Curiosity – DIY 6" Newtonian Reflector Telescope
The question probably shouldn't be "is it less expensive" but "is it a better value".

The general sentiment behind these 3d printed telescopes are that you'd generally get better quality and potentially better QoL features at the same cost of buying some commercially available options.

From the Hadley project

>The mission here is to make an attractive alternative to the shoddy, hard to use "hobby-killer" scopes in the $100-200 range.

BadJo0Jo0··on iPhone cameras are good
Wasn't there a phone with a lens mount system using that maker's existing lens eco system? I cant remember the maker. Sony? Nikon?
BadJo0Jo0··on 12 years of Backblaze data center storage drives, visualized
Fun to look at! Since I also had a mini project, that utilized this data. Sadly, haven't maintained it in awhile. It's a Show HN on my profile if you're curious.

I hope you had a better time with ingesting the data than I did :)

BadJo0Jo0··on Playstation Vita Architecture (Part 1)
I'm a huge fan of the original PSP and the homebrew/jailbreaking scene that came out of it. I recently acquired a PS Vita and have been enjoying it's native and homebrew offerings. It's also surprising that the homebrew scene is still fairly active there too. Apparently there's some potential for Android game ports. I wish Sony didn't let the PS Vita flop, it feels like it had so much potential at the time.
BadJo0Jo0··on Show HN: FlowTracker – Track data flowing through Java programs
Thanks for this!

Been trying to get this work with VSCode with a project I'm trying to make sense of. Having to take a pause on it right now, but looking forward to getting it working and playing with it.

BadJo0Jo0··on LINQPad – The .NET Programmer's Playground
These days across all languages, I just default to a Jupyter notebook.
BadJo0Jo0··on How to save an old printer from the e-waste pile with a Raspberry Pi
For a second I thought we had a breakthrough in getting custom firmware for printers, namely HP. But yes CUPs is awesome!
BadJo0Jo0··on Used cars retain designs and features more coveted than their replacements
I can somewhat justify the cost of mid and full size SUVs currently, but still hate that you're looking to spend about 40-60k, more if luxury. The "popularity" of the segment has pushed makers to actually put some effort in handling, fuel efficiency, and reliability. The current offerings of this segment is leaps better than majority of the offerings of mid 2010s and older.

However, each maker is just slightly missing the mark here and there, and you are pretty much just cross shopping compromises. Unibody or body on frame? Lose physical buttons? Get touchscreen distractions spanned across your entire dash? Half baked infotainment system? Laughable trunk space with the third row up? No fold flat third row? Off-road/overland trim, but barely capable and/or not even a good enough platform to warrant aftermarket support?

At the current prices new or used, how long these cars last when taken care of, and being a "bang for buck"/"buy once cry once" kind of person. Nothing has really been compelling enough for me to purchase a 3 row for my spouse. (Nuclear family with kids really close in age that regularly road trip)

When it comes to crossovers, compact, and sedans. (Non sport/performance trims) The prices are alright, just find a solid example of something made within the past decade within your budget, take care of it, it takes care of you.

The sports car or performance trim segment is where I'm also torn. On one hand, everything is so much faster, capable, and more reliable (debatable) as time goes on. The other, is that the essence of what made older cars of the same segment great is slowly getting neutered out of the overall driving and owning experience.

BadJo0Jo0··on HP exec says quiet part out loud when it comes to locking in print customers
I have a M283FDW, it's great besides the firmware for toner checks. The one time I tried a third party toner, only to have it get bricked a week later, made me want to try to tackle creating a custom firmware or just straight come up with a drop in mainboard.

Would be an interesting project if I had the spare time

BadJo0Jo0··on HHKB Studio: The New Happy Hacking Keyboard with TrackPoint
I want this for my HTPC, but cant justify the price. Happy to see other similar options mentioned here.
BadJo0Jo0··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
Getting back into the "maker"/"tinker" groove.

Modifying and calibrating my 3d printer(s), chasing speed while maintaining print quality.

Using CAD more seriously, trying to challenge myself with more complex projects and models. Current project is to make a CoreXY Plotter from an old 3d printer I just disassembled.

Wanting to get/make a CNC Mill/Router to finally have the ability to work on some bigger "cooler" projects. ex. I have a custom PC case model that I've been working on, and can't wait to build for the upcoming rig upgrade.

BadJo0Jo0··on Sennheiser HD 555 to HD 595 Mod
Loved my HD555s, did the foam removal instantly, but wouldn't say it was a game changer.

Rocked the Zalman clip on mic and moved on to doing the 3.5mm detachable mod and used a V-Moda BoomPro.

Still a great setup today, especially for gaming. Sadly lacking in bass.

BadJo0Jo0··on Windows 11’s taskbar is finally getting labels and never combine app icons
I've been using valinet/ExplorerPatcher on Win11 for a bit just to bring back all the old Win10 taskbar stuff. I know we should even need this, but I hope this is helpful.

BadJo0Jo0··on Show HN: BackBlaze Hard Drive Data Failure Viewer
Awesome! Glad to know that someone out there is enjoying this tool. Has definitely given me more motivation to polish it up, rather than me slogging along.

I honestly did the referral link to the model search because prior to doing so I was trying to price check, but don't have a programmatic way of doing that without access to the Associates API.

I did it manually at first, but then saw price drifts within a couple of days. On top of that, some models on the list were out of production and I was hesitant to link pricing to models that were likely to be refurbished, old stock, or listed as used.

I wasn't aware of ASIN, I do like the approach better, so I can work on getting that switched over when I get free time over the weekend.

Thanks again for your feedback!

Doh! I was accidentally reverting the state to the very beginning when applying the column sort. I just deployed the fix for that

BadJo0Jo0··on Show HN: BackBlaze Hard Drive Data Failure Viewer
I get that sometimes too. I just refresh the page because I have no idea where that's coming from. It's definitely high on the list to resolve
BadJo0Jo0··on Show HN: BackBlaze Hard Drive Data Failure Viewer
Haha thanks for catching that. Will be sorting that out now
BadJo0Jo0··on Show HN: BackBlaze Hard Drive Data Failure Viewer
Thanks for the feedback, I can definitely add ranges to fields next!

I just updated the UI and now have a better filtering panel and also have column sorting.

BadJo0Jo0··on Show HN: BackBlaze Hard Drive Data Failure Viewer
Hello HN!

I'm a huge fan of the BackBlaze Drive Failure Reports[0] and use them exclusively when shopping for drives to use for my NAS. This project was an excuse to dive into F# and how it's used for Web Devlopment (SAFE Stack[1]) to provide me with a quick way to view the drive reports and search the drives on Amazon.

It's very much a MVP. I'd like to improve on it when I find more time. Ideally, the next steps would be for me to actually level up my front end game to have something much prettier to look at. As well as provide common functionality that you'd expect from something like this. (cough Column sorting cough)

Hope some of you find this useful or interesting.

Thanks!

BadJo0Jo0··on Ask HN: What does one look for in a laptop these days?
Guessing he means laptops where the camera is below the display and is pointing up at your nose when in use
BadJo0Jo0··on Show HN: Football/Running Tracking, Sprint Detection
This is actually pretty cool! Would be awesome for smaller teams or clubs to use as an analysis tool.
BadJo0Jo0··on Linux on iPad
I was hoping this would bring a dead weight ipad mini back to life, but was very sad to not see it on the support list. Great project either way!
BadJo0Jo0··on Printing and Assembling the MK735, a 3D-Printed DIY NAS Case
I have a few 3D Printers, a scratch CoreXY build, Tevo Tarantula, and PowerSpec Ultra (rebranded FlashForge Dreamer) I run prints unattended often. Overnight or leaving my house for errands. The only thing I do is regularly check termination points and board components to see if they are fine.

I wish I knew what was wrong with other people's configurations or the quality/settings of their hardware that causes these fires.

I blame kit providers racing to the bottom to throwing together low quality hardware and passing them off as solid workhorses. For my Tevo Trantula I replaced the screw down terminal block for one with higher amperage rating after noticing some slight melting on the housing, and spent a whole day doing PID tuning for the hot end and the heated bed.

There should also be a bigger disclaimer for kits to deter people who don't have decent knowledge in electronics to just go for complete printers or higher quality/proven kits.

BadJo0Jo0··on Google Is Turning Off the Works-with-Nest API
While I'm frustrated at this, I'm wondering if what I'm feeling is a knee-jerk reaction.

I wonder how the Actions on Google Smart Homes integration works.

Will I still be able to control my Nest thermostats from Google Smart Home Actions? This seems to be mentioned, but it's unclear what I'm able to do and how.
