BMorearty··on Twitter suffers major outage, leaving users unable to log on
Twitter homepage doesn't work.

Viewing a user's page works. Viewing a specific tweet works. Twitter app works.

BMorearty··on Ask HN: What's a build vs. buy decision that you got wrong?
You created an account just to say this.
BMorearty··on Ask HN: Help – Locked out of 10 years Gmail account
Thanks for the tip. I’m currently at 3 but I get what you’re saying. I might try it.
BMorearty··on Ask HN: Help – Locked out of 10 years Gmail account
Are you implying there is any email provider that doesn't have access to your emails?

How does Fastmail determine which ones are spam?

BMorearty··on Ask HN: Help – Locked out of 10 years Gmail account
I love Gmail’s automated inbox categories. Looks like Fastmail doesn’t have that?

(I know I can set up manual filters. I prefer it to be done for me automatically.)

BMorearty··on Firefox Translations: Translate websites in your browser without using the cloud
That stinks. But I’m surprised. I went back to FF full-time in 2021 and have seen almost no compatibility issues with websites.
BMorearty··on Kite is saying farewell and open-sourcing its code
Disagree. The comment I replied to was about personally paying for tools. My read was that they meant for personal use. And you started the snark, not me.
BMorearty··on Kite is saying farewell and open-sourcing its code
Oh yes I’m sure my boss is shaking in their boots about being liable for how I spend my own money on my own time for personal projects.
BMorearty··on Kite is saying farewell and open-sourcing its code
Agreed. JetBrains and GitHub Copilot are the two exceptions for me as an individual programmer.
BMorearty··on Tell HN: Somebody implemented something I wrote a blog about
What an amazing idea! I would love to have that feature.
BMorearty··on Shopify lets staff decide cash-stock pay mix as shares dive
You’d rather the tech industry work like industries where only founders and executives reap windfalls of exit events? If your reply is that the company can offer bonuses when the exit event happens, (1) most companies don’t do this after the fact but stock is a way to force it to happen and (2) this doesn’t help employees who stayed for many years but didn’t happen to be there at the moment of the exit.
BMorearty··on Shopify lets staff decide cash-stock pay mix as shares dive
Were you able to exercise those options after the acquisition was announced? Did you finally get the payday you were hoping for?
BMorearty··on Shopify lets staff decide cash-stock pay mix as shares dive
Replacing stock compensation with cash salary and bonus would be a terrible idea.

Other industries should be moving toward employee ownership, not the other way around. Employee ownership creates shared incentives. Shared incentives create alignment. Alignment helps eliminate an antagonistic relationship between employees and management. Instead of them vs. us, it moves it more towards all us. Instead of the fat cats and the lowly workers, everyone gets to reap the benefits or share the losses. Of course the founders and execs get more, I'm not saying it's equal, but it is a far better system than pure cash.

BMorearty··on Byte Magazine: Declarative Languages (1985)
What a surprise to go to Byte Magazine from 1985 and see Picasso’s “Interior with a Girl Drawing” on the cover. I hand-painted a copy of it using oil on canvas in a painting class in the mid-90s. [1] I still have it on the wall of my backyard cottage.

There's at least one other type of unenforced law: a law whose opponents were unable to block its passing, but were able to block funding for its enforcement agency or block appointment of a head of that agency.
BMorearty··on City Generator
I discovered Townscaper a couple weeks ago. It’s relaxing to play with and I have been enjoying building a reproduction of Mont-Saint-Michel...until yesterday when I ran into a limitation in the iPad version. :( According to Oskar’s reply, I can get either the height I need or the width I need, but not both. https://twitter.com/moreartyart/status/1493073923251994628?s...

BMorearty··on Don't make me think, or why I switched to Rails from JavaScript SPAs
Great post. This is one reason I love using Rails, the fact that it makes so many decisions for you—and with good defaults. Before Rails I had the exhausting experience of spending weeks making tech decisions just to start a project. (I’m also a huge JavaScript fan but for different reasons.)

Small nit about one point in the post:

> As far as I know, serverless platforms don't support WebSockets

I’ve spent the last couple weeks deep-diving on Cloudflare Workers. They have good support for WebSockets. And if you need your WebSocket to maintain state long-term, the server side can use a Durable Object.

BMorearty··on GnuPG used to ask for your support to help protect online privacy
Very confusing post. It doesn’t explain how they are now making money--which is probably relevant for some folks to trust them to protect online privacy.

SelfControl is a nicely done, free open source program that does the same thing. https://selfcontrolapp.com/. Code: https://github.com/SelfControlApp/selfcontrol/
BMorearty··on Firefox 94 has No Visible Border on unfocused tabs
I haven’t tried Brave but speaking of CMD-SHIFT-A (which also works in Chrome), I’ve learned that Firefox has a CTRL-TAB feature that works better IMO (easier keystroke and it works just like CMD-TAB).

It’s optional. The option is called “Ctrl+Tab cycles through tabs in recently used order.”

BMorearty··on Firefox 94 has No Visible Border on unfocused tabs
I’m with you. I like the direction it’s going in. I’m also Firefox as my primary browser after many years of Chrome.

The main tab-related visual I need is to see easily which tab is activated. That’s still easy to do with the new style.

BMorearty··on Async Python is not faster (2020)
I can’t tell if your first list is misconceptions or your rebuttals to misconceptions. You said it’s misconceptions but I think it’s your rebuttals.
BMorearty··on Firefox 94
I think it works now. I did it last week and haven’t seen the sponsored shortcuts reappear.
BMorearty··on Firefox 94
My comparison list was based on things I care about / have noticed so far, not based on a full feature comparison. Multiaccounts Containers addon isn’t something I care much about. I do kind of like the Facebook container addon but would be fine without it.

Funny you mention uBlock Origin being more effective on Firefox. As I mentioned, it seems to block things I don’t want it to block when I’m using Firefox.

BMorearty··on Firefox 94
No, I’ve looked at every tab group addon I can find. None works to my liking.
BMorearty··on Firefox 94
Thanks, I looked at that one but I’m not looking for something that takes up more space, either horizontally or vertically. I like how Chrome’s tab groups just collapse your tabs along the top tab bar.
BMorearty··on Firefox 94
Agreed, tab groups are the main thing I miss after switching from Chrome recently. Hoping they come soon.
