BMarkmann··on Montreux Jazz Live – 50 years of music history released
This has such potential, but ALL kinds of problems with the website navigation and display (at least in latest Chrome on Linux).

Am I missing if there is some sort of audio download somewhere?

BMarkmann··on MuseScore: Create, play and print beautiful sheet music
The output in their screenshots look nice, but it looks like there are some cases that aren't handled as cleanly as I suspect LilyPond would render them. In the "Praeludium 10" screenshot on their website, look at the first sixteenth note in bar 21, for example. It's rendered really close to the left margin (and obscures the tempo marking); most printed scores would include a tad more padding for readability. Would be interesting to read their layout algorithm and compare it to Lily's (I guess I can!).
BMarkmann··on Why Have So Many People Never Heard of the MOVE Bombing?
Not sure how this fits in with HN, but since it's here... there was a great documentary made a couple years ago on the whole series of events that led up to the final standoff and the aftermath: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2119463/
BMarkmann··on Let’s Move Beyond Open Data Portals
I think the first two are, indeed, fairly simple from a technology perspective. CTOs in government (or whatever other role is responsible for making the data in question available) isn't simple or technology-related.

From my perspective -- both working with groups mandated to make data available and researchers consuming public datasets -- those responsible for making the data available DON'T get it in the vast majority of instances. It's tough to tell if it's obtuseness, incompetence, or... call it what you will, but if you are mandated to make information available that can directly assess your performance or the performance of the organization you lead, you might not have the right incentives.

A recent experience: the federal (US) government releases data regarding clinical trials conducted by drug companies and universities available for download in a format that they basically made up. OK, no problem, I've written lots of parsers. Ingest the data from the source files, but wait! There's no data dictionary or even a vague description of the relationships between the contents of the (many) files they publish. You can make pretty good guesses, but it definitely doesn't follow a well-documented API (or schema, whatever). Just a recent gripe that's stuck in my craw, but it's not an isolated case in my experience. I have come across a few that are very good and follow the best practices you note, but most I've worked with do not. I would guess that the former have your third characteristic; the latter likely do not.

BMarkmann··on F – a pure functional concatenative language (2006)
That's actually the most verbose k code I've ever seen (but probably also the most reasonably readable)...
BMarkmann··on Kelly Slater's New Man Made Wave Project
I wonder if he had Jack Johnson's pockets behind it...? (they're neighbors and long-time boys).

It's obvious enough that the normal wave pool flapper / "pump-and-dump" approach doesn't give you a tube. I always kind of intuitively thought it was wind-related, but reflecting on it that doesn't really make sense. Maybe pushing the water out with some sort of cork-screwing instead of a straight-line push? Who knows... anyway, I feel like they may stumbled onto a goldmine. Awesome indoor winter surfing, anyone?

BMarkmann··on Kelly Slater's New Man Made Wave Project
That is incredible -- you could make surfing a "thing" anywhere away from the coast. I'm curious how they did it, and how it differs from traditional wave pools... maybe a better understanding / implementation of the physics that make a good curl?
BMarkmann··on Simulating the TS808 Tube Screamer in LTSpice
By "convincing", what sort of delay would you be looking at on reasonably powerful hardware? Enough to fool the ear into thinking it really was real-time?

As a side question, are the sorts of modeling / math that would be done in a scenario like this amenable to offloading to a GPU (if the transformations would potentially be better handled by something like http://www.bealto.com/gpu-fft.html, for instance)? Is that a dumb question? :-)

BMarkmann··on Clojure all the way down
Has anyone tried to get a Clojure-in-Clojure on the JVM working? Similar to PyPy or something of that ilk... I think even Shen (or even some branch of arc, I believe) would be more along those lines?
BMarkmann··on Clojure all the way down
Also (note that I only went through the slides), it seems like he misunderstands what "All the way down" traditionally means in the context of Lisp. Clojure is different than the lisp variants that embrace this philosophy BECAUSE it's implemented on top of the JVM/CLR. You have access to the core Clojure implemented parts of the language, but you eventually hit a boundary where you explicitly cannot go further -- precisely where the Java part starts.

I guess you could argue that most Schemes / Lisps have a similar boundary, but from using both it feels different in Clojure.

In short, I think you run out of turtles to jump down onto at a certain point in Clojure.

BMarkmann··on Ask HN: APL family instead of R for data analysis?
You could just blow everyone's mind of sneak APL into R:

http://statistics.ucla.edu/system/resources/BAhbBlsHOgZmSSIp...

BMarkmann··on x*sin(y)
Wolfram Alpha does a pretty amazing job of taking an existing graphic and turning back into a graph-able equation... eg:

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=graph+looks+like+batman

http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=graph+looks+like+bart+s...

BMarkmann··on Introducing TaskRouter
I would agree with the characterization that it's moving up the stack... but it does seem to (without saying it explicitly -- not clear whether that's conscious or not) start to overlap heavily with an existing space [1]. How would you differentiate it from BPM / workflow tools (one open-source example being Activiti [2], but there are many in the market)?

BMarkmann··on NHL partners with GoPro to deliver fans unique perspectives of the game
To be fair, sports content is also already heading in the direction other content is taking. I have NHL Gamecenter Live, for instance, which lets me watch all games timeshifted, select the home or away announcers, watch only the highlights, do relays, etc. Adding features like first-person POV this will only serve to enhance the non-broadcast experience further.
BMarkmann··on Curated list of data models and database schemas
Would be nice to have DDL for various databases included for each one. Fun time-killing resource, though.
BMarkmann··on FBI explains how it linked North Korea to the Sony Pictures hack
One problem I have with the "you don't see what I see, just trust I'm right" line is that there's no way to refute it -- short of an outside, independent party providing a different compelling analysis and interpretation of the forensic evidence. The relevant parties (Sony, FBI, etc...) don't have any interested in sharing, and in fact have a vested interest in not sharing, that forensic evidence. So... I strongly suspect that right or wrong, the existing given position is the story that will always stand.

BMarkmann··on [dead]
Ah! Both HN search and Google failed to find it for me. Sorry!
BMarkmann··on Ask HN: What is to Emacs as Neovim is to vim?
There are several attempts -- some more, some less successful -- to refactor, improve, and extend Emacs as a platform and editor. (One of the more interesting ones, in my opinion, is GuileEmacs, which is an attempt to use Guile Scheme as a replacement for Emacs Lisp.) Here is a good list of things you might be looking for:

BMarkmann··on Computer Science: the 8th Highest Paid College Major
Insofar as people reading it would extrapolate from those numbers to some kind of quality of life / envisioned financial security, out of context I do think they are meaningless. As the parent said, at least location / cost of living needs to be factored in.

That being said, it's probably worth noting for younger folks that ALL of the top fields, in terms of expected compensation, are all STEM fields (mostly engineering). This is coming from one who majored in English, but made the move to the software field, sooo..... maybe eventual field of expertise is more important than "major" anyway. There's nothing to say a particular major locks you into a career path. On the other hand, I probably would have been hard-pressed to transition into something like nuclear engineering.

BMarkmann··on George R.R. Martin Writes Everything In WordStar 4.0 On A DOS Machine
He got off the exit right before the highway ran into Clippy-ville. Good for him. Also of a similar ilk is Neal Stephenson, who writes his stuff in Emacs (in LaTeX, I believe). There is something to be said for cranking out raw text without worrying about fighting the beast over spelling, grammar, indentation, auto-this and auto-that. If you're good, those things just get in the way.
BMarkmann··on Show HN: Floppy Bird Game of Thrones Edition
That music could really make anything sound incredibly dramatic.
BMarkmann··on Using Datomic as a Graph Database
Datomic and Datalog continue to amaze me, and give me hope that there might be a light at the end of the tunnel in terms of bringing us out of the depths of the SQL quagmire we've been stuck in for decades. Having the ability to persist, retrieve, and query data directly within the language you're using feel so much more natural than trying to mix in another language with a foreign paradigm into your applications (SQL) or sticking a contrived layer on top that tries (sometimes effectively, but with lots of edge cases and inside-baseball stuff to grok and deal with -- ORMs) to hide it away. I use SQL every day -- heck, to a certain degree even like SQL -- but this just feels... better.
BMarkmann··on Pool Trick Shots With Totally Insane Skills
That's a lot of english for a German guy. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
BMarkmann··on Every single satellite orbiting Earth, in a single image
Would be interesting to see in an animation.
BMarkmann··on Q – Execute SQL on text. Supports joins across files, RPM available
That was my initial impression, also... I though kx had added text-processing to kdb.
