BJanecke··on I hate almost all software (2011)
This is a bit of a rant so either ignore it or consume the frustration and empathise.

Good enough is a turd in disguise, your desire to deliver enough working software to justify your existence and salary is egotistic and myopic.

Build sustainable software, that will work, for you, your predecessors and successors.

The constraints of the domain are fine and dandy, that's what matters, that's the problem deadlines, delivery and all of that is superficial. Keeping the business afloat for now is a band-aid on cancer if you can't write software in a a way that you in 10 months, 1 year, 3 years will be able to maintain.

Here's the reality, you screwed up, you buckled and allowed the pressures of institutionalised shittyness to constrain you capacity to deliver real value.

Please, everyone lets stop acting like software is some ephemeral joke that we can half-ass, and start being serous about the implications of our actions.

BJanecke··on Ask HN: Why aren't there middle class cars shaped like Ferraris?
I prefer octocat.
BJanecke··on Ask HN: Dual monitors, or single 4k?
A single 27" WQHD(1440p) goes a very long way. I used to be 3 23" monitor person, but once I saw I can have all that context on one monitor without having to swivel my head around constantly I was hooked. I aim to be like the chicken in that one Mercedes commercial now.
BJanecke··on Why are we all moving away from Apple?
> "My company for 3000+ is all windows based, for obvious reasons"

What so you can lock up your co-workers with Citrix and Cisco tools made to track and neuter freedoms? So you can pay consultants silly amounts of money to hire other consultants to set up AD policies to satisfy your executives who "Talked to "BigCorp's" CTO and they use Citrix for VPN because it's "secure" so we should too". Or so you can shoehorn solutions like Lync(Skype4B) down peoples throats because theoretically it "Checks all the right boxes to keep management happy and get us that ISO certificate."

I'm not saying this is your fault, or trying to be facetious, I'm actually trying to empathise with you but talking/writing/thinking about the clusterbork that is Enterprise windows deployments is sickening.

BJanecke··on What Makes a Senior Software Developer?
it depends
BJanecke··on Ask HN: Best Monitor Around $300 for Dev Work?
So WQHD monitors are generally above that price range, but I would seriously suggest you consider investing in one.

Since they have become fairly niche over the last few years only pro level users buy them, so almost any monitor you buy in this space is bound to be excellent and score far above average for things like colour accuracy.

Also a WQHD resolution at 27" is the perfect size to have two text editors at 16pt next to each other. Or An editor and two terminals, or anything really. It's silly how small HD really is and how cumbersome 6:9 is for "getting shit done".

Why not 4K? Because right now it's still a gimmick and the chances of you hitting a sold-to-chache-in-on-fad monitor is jus too darn high.

"more things than just latency"

Some financial institutions require all sensitive* data to be stored/hosted in the same country/state(archaic yes).

It's real hard to actually define sensitive data but the IP* in some code a quant wrote can totally be considered a trade secret by a non technical person Please don't get me started on how stupid I think it is that people consider code to be IP

BJanecke··on Proposed server purchase for GitLab.com
Except the really good -> exceptional talent just ends up on staff at the operations incubator and the rest go to the world at large :'(
BJanecke··on Proposed server purchase for GitLab.com
Don't have hard numbers you say?

[EDIT]

Oops that's reliability, I can jump the gun sometimes, sorry.

BJanecke··on Proposed server purchase for GitLab.com
Right now that makes sense yes. What about 5 years from now when it doesn't? This way they get to start building a team and culture to support that kind of infrastructure and wean the baby teeth on nice soft furniture.
BJanecke··on Proposed server purchase for GitLab.com
So what about the data privacy in the USA, and patriot act and all that. Also think fin tech where geolocation means more things than just latency.

BJanecke··on Jest – Painless JavaScript Testing
It comes with jsDom baked into it for browser behaviour. Using a full headless browser to test with is not ideal, however I trust that you have a good reason to want that. If that is a requirement for you, you can tie jest up to karma :), but I beseech you to have a very good reason to test against a headless browser first :)
BJanecke··on Jest – Painless JavaScript Testing
That's pretty darned rad!

Kinda like wallabyjs, but not hitting me over the head with a license :P

BJanecke··on Jest – Painless JavaScript Testing
This might be a bit frivolous.

But

Jest has gotten a whole lot better over the last few months. It used to be slow, cryptic and dogmatic. Now it's fast, transparent and open to debate.

Great job Jest team!

I would qualify that but I started this comment saying it was going to be frivolous. If enough people care however I'll expand on this.

BJanecke··on The No More Ransom Project

BJanecke··on Rant HN: I hate hackerrank
Hiring someone purely on technical skill is myopic, I'm not going to blabber on about "Cultural Fit" but in small to medium teams hiring someone with vastly opposing viewpoints can be detrimental or it could be greatly beneficial.

How could you expect to measure the social impact of a new member on your team when you look at them as a technical robot and not a human being.

BJanecke··on Ask HN: What is your favorite Google chrome extension?
Why use dynamite when you can do the same thing with the developer tools fairly easily?
BJanecke··on Fork: Fast and Friendly Git Client for Mac
This is awesome, and might actually finally replace GITX for me.

Needs a CLI to open repos with.

For now I'm using echo /Applications/Fork.app/Contents/MacOS/Fork > /usr/local/bin/fork && CHMOD +x /usr/local/bin/fork

which is not super ideal

*edit - typo

> " I've never had to look for a job... I just say yes when a good email comes in."

This, is what gets me. It's stuff like this that makes me feel like the longer I stay in software the further detached from the general reality I will become. I love software, but I hate how much it drives me away from the rest of society.

BJanecke··on The world’s most liveable cities
I don't get how a city like Melbourne can score as highly as it does considering the state of LGBT laws in that country. Surely this has to be taken into consideration.
BJanecke··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (June 2016)
Red Comet Labs | South Africa | Javascript Developer | REMOTE

HOW WE WORK

Project-based work for clients. The majority of our work involves working with clients to build excellent applications. Tools and technologies we use include: React.js, Redux, D3.js, CouchDB, PouchDB and Node.js. Remote work. We currently have developers in Joburg and Cape Town and we’re committed to remote work. Although we’d like to keep the team in South Africa for the meantime, there’s the potential for you to work from anywhere in the world. Small team of smart developers. You’d be working with developers who are really making their mark in their area of specialisation. Because we’re a small team, you’ll be able to gain experience in the entire application development process – frontend and backend development, design, UX, devops, testing, project management – whatever you’re keen on. Flexible contracting/employment structure. We realise everyone wants to work in a different way, so if you’re the right fit, we’re happy to structure a working relationship that suits both you and us, whether that’s full time employment, or a more flexible contracting arrangement. We aim for a calm, organised working environment where work forms a part of a balanced life. If we’re working through the night or over weekends, then we’ve done something horribly wrong. This means we work hard during our working time, plan carefully and keep the focus on getting things done well.

HOW TO APPLY

Send an email to garren@redcometlabs.com in which you explain why you’d be suitable for this position. Please include:

A link to your GitHub profile A concise CV, edited to highlight how your skills would fit this role (no Matric marks required!)

BJanecke··on Ask HN: Can't concentrate to focus, until it's last minute or later
These are hallmark signs of major depression; depression that is so intense, it impairs your basic function. Some other questions you might want to ask yourself are.

* Am I getting too little/too much sleep. * Have I lost interest in things I used to enjoy. * Am I talking less than I usually do. * Do I find the need to be around people but when I am around them I just want to get away.

If any of this sounds familiar to you I implore you find professional help, depression should be treated the same as any major Illness and is life threatening if left unchecked.

You are not alone, you are not the only person who has ever felt this way, there is a definite way out, humans are smart we have learned how to deal with these things :)

BJanecke··on Pure: a set of small, responsive CSS modules
Foundation is not much different from bootstrap on the surface; yet there are use cases where foundation works alot better than bootstrap and vice versa. Diversity is good bootstrap is fast headed to becoming a mono-culture in html/css prototyping. Pure is still a very young framework and might yet end up targeting a different use case than bootstrap does.
