BDGC··on Show HN: Now I Get It – Translate scientific papers into interactive webpages
This is neat! As an academic, this is definitely something I can see using to share my work with friends and family, or showing on my lab website for each paper. Can’t wait to try it out.
BDGC··on Administering immunotherapy in the morning seems to matter. Why?
If you’re interested in circadian biology, which underlies chronoimmunotherapy, please check out UCSD’s BioClock Studio. We create tutorial videos and other media to teach circadian biology concepts: https://bioclock.ucsd.edu/
BDGC··on Facebook denies it collects call and SMS data from phones without permission
Anecdote here: I was talking to a college student who hadn’t heard about the whole Cambridge Analytica to-do. Why? She uses Facebook to check the news, and unsurprisingly it wasn’t coming up on trending news.
BDGC··on London City Airport Shut as WW2 Bomb Found in Thames
If you’re in to this kind of stuff, I recommend “Aftermath: The Remnants of War,” by Donovan Webster.
BDGC··on Blood Transfusion from Ever-Pregnant Females Associated with Mortality in Males
I hate to break it to you, but never pregnant != virgin
BDGC··on 2017 Nobel Prize in Medicine for the molecular mechanisms of circadian rhythm
For those interested in learning more about circadian rhythms, I highly recommend checking out the materials that UCSD's BioClock Studio has put out. As you might be noticing, there's a dearth of accessible circadian biology materials. The BioClock Studio has interested undergrads create movies and media addressing critical circadian biology concepts, experiments, and researchers.

BDGC··on Ask HN: Which scifi authors to interview about immortality?
Claire North (aka Catherine Webb). Her book "The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August" addresses a different "type" of immortality than we typically think of.
BDGC··on The financial struggles of a breast pump startup
If you read the article, you'd see that the pump in question already has FDA approval.
BDGC··on Most scientists 'can't replicate studies by their peers'
Seconding the support for COS. When they test reproducibility, they actually pair labs that are proficient in the particular technique with the original authors. The two labs (the originator and reproducer) work together to try to replicate the findings in the new environment. It's a smart way to work around the problem of labs trying (and failing) new techniques.
BDGC··on Vancouver plans to tax empty properties 1% of their assessed value
A typical home in Vancouver BC is $1.4M[0], so if anything it's an understatement.

BDGC··on Women rise through the ranks of IT more rapidly than men
I appreciate your comment, and I second your point about the education and social structure being different for girls/women. In my experience, it can be difficult for folks to understand just how different it can be - whether by gender, race, or lower socioeconomic status - which is completely fair. There are always exceptions to generalizations, which makes making progress in these arguments difficult.

For those who still believe it's a feminist conspiracy, I encourage you to read this brief report (with links to an excellent full report) with hard numbers on the experience of women in STEM: https://hbr.org/2015/03/the-5-biases-pushing-women-out-of-st...

And if you think you're above bias, or that it doesn't exist against women, please challenge yourself with the unconscious bias test: https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/takeatest.html Stats are available after the test. I am a woman with a PhD in a STEM field, and guess what - I have biases against my own sex.

BDGC··on NLRB rules graduate students are employees
Depends on the institution. I was paid by an NIH training grant and received a 1099, and every year I had to prove to the IRS I wasn't an independent contractor.
BDGC··on After 100 years World War I battlefields are poisoned and uninhabitable
The book "Aftermath: The Remnants of War" by Donovan Webster explores how the wars of the last century have impacted the surrounding areas. He also gives great perspectives on the clean up effort/process. Highly recommend.
BDGC··on Ask HN: Should I quit graduate school to avoid a bad advisor?
I switched advisors in my fourth year of a neuroscience PhD. I distinctly recall wondering if it was worth burning 2+ years in a different lab for an experience that might not be better. For me, switching labs was 100% the right decision. I'm still in science, love what I do, and I'm glad I changed even if it was "too late."

Try to distance yourself a little to get perspective. Even from a one week vacation, a month in a collaborator's lab, anything to try to remove yourself and then re-evaluate. Your advisory committee can also help, once you articulate that you're considering leaving.

BDGC··on Ask HN: Coffee or Tea?
I did that, and I love the taste of coffee. Check out Dandy Blend - it's got the body of coffee, and you can add cream to it, but there's no caffeine. It's not for everyone, but it got me through those dark winter days when I just craved a cup of coffee.
