AzzyHN··on School smartphone ban results in better sleep and improved mood: study
Not really, no.

People have been talking about the "death of the third place" for a while, now.

AzzyHN··on American cops are using AI to draft police reports, and the ACLU isn't happy
In your car crash example, that police report could be a key piece of evidence in a civil case that causes one party to need to pay up rather than the other. The amount they have to pay could be enough to ruin their life.

Of course, that's to say nothing of criminal cases

AzzyHN··on Assisted dying now accounts for one in 20 Canada deaths
Be coming homeless isn't a problem with the person, it's an outcome of the system we live in.

The population of homeless people would end up probably where it was when you killed them all. Though I do wonder how long that would take

AzzyHN··on Linux EFI Zboot Abandoning "Compression Library Museum", Focusing on Gzip, ZSTD
At high levels (19), it gives similar ratios to xz and 7z. But you're correct that the main advantage is the comparatively fast compression and very fast decompression speeds.
AzzyHN··on Police illegally sell restricted weapons, supplying crime
What a quote
AzzyHN··on President Biden pardons his son Hunter Biden
That certainly doesn't look good.
AzzyHN··on Police bust pirate streaming service making €250M per month
The $10.5B number is bullshit. It assumes every piracy stream user would've been a paying customer (which is false), and they would have paid the full, non-sale value (also false).

For subscriptions, they usually add up the cost over at least 12 months. Sometimes longer.

AzzyHN··on Bootkitty: Analyzing the first UEFI bootkit for Linux
It's more secure than not having Secure Boot.
AzzyHN··on Australia: Kids under 16 to be banned from social media after Senate passes laws
The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
AzzyHN··on Undersea Cables Connect the Global Internet
Hypothetically you could test this by forcing your connections to avoid certain data centers... how you would do this, I'm unsure. It's been a while since I've taken a course on it but I swear CompTIA Network+ covered this
AzzyHN··on Undersea Cables Connect the Global Internet
No issues here on Firefox 128.4.0esr, even with uBlock Origin medium mode[1] blocking 31% of the page.

AzzyHN··on Undersea Cables Connect the Global Internet
> The telecommunications analytics agency TeleGeography maintains an addictive map of all the world’s undersea cables[...]

They weren't kidding, it is addictive! I'm surprised that zero undersea cables connect directly to the SF Bay Area, and how many cables there are in the bay around Seattle/Vancouver.

And the Far North Fiber connecting Norway, Ireland, Alaska (USA), and Japan, but none of the other countries it goes by on the way. I wonder why.

AzzyHN··on Microsoft's New PC Looks Just Like a Mac Mini but Serves a Whole New Purpose
$349 for a terrible thinclient
AzzyHN··on DOJ will push Google to sell off Chrome
Mozilla has a chance to do something really funny
AzzyHN··on Bluesky is receiving about 3k reports/hour
Blegh. Hopefully they're using some computer assistance, like PhotoDNA or Project Arachnid
AzzyHN··on New Apple security feature reboots iPhones after 3 days, researchers confirm
Not OP, but very well!! The only things that don't work for me are Google Pay and Android Auto, which is a shame but I can live without both of those.
AzzyHN··on PRC Targeting of Commercial Telecommunications Infrastructure
Damn, who could've seen this coming!?
AzzyHN··on Improving Steam Client Stability on Linux
All of this stuff goes way over my head. I'm on Pop!_OS and am happy to report "it just works" (tm), though it ignores scaling entirely.
AzzyHN··on Section 230 Immunizes OnlyFans for User-Uploaded Video–DOE vs. Fenix
Twitter has already changed their TOS so that any legal challenges happen in a district with a Trump-appointed judge. I imagine similar tactics would be used to create a "rules for thee but not for me" situation. There are a lot of Trump-appointed judges now.
AzzyHN··on Cops suspect iOS 18 iPhones are communicating to force reboots
You're thinking of Amazon giving Ring footage to police without warrants.
AzzyHN··on Perceptually lossless (talking head) video compression at 22kbit/s
Did you mean H.266? Or is there some secret H.267 that hasn't been agreed upon yet
AzzyHN··on Perceptually lossless (talking head) video compression at 22kbit/s
Really? Would there be a way to replicate this with currently available encoders? I'd like to try it
AzzyHN··on New York Times Tech Guild goes on strike
I appreciate you for joining in solidarity.
AzzyHN··on Intel might be too big to fail
I haven't read the article yet, but I disagree on principle. AMD processors are a drop-in replacement for any and all software running on Intel chips (except for things that interact with the Management Engine, but that's a small portion of software I hope).

Aside from it leaving only one major x86 CPU manufacturer, the only thing Intel's absence would cause would be a massive amount of paperwork, as every system integrator under the sun has to figure out contracts with AMD.

AzzyHN··on Touchscreens are out, and tactile controls are back
Give me a big screen for music info, maps, settings, that kind of stuff. Give me buttons for everything else.
AzzyHN··on Colossus AI Supercluster with over 100k Nvidia H100 GPUs
It costs $400,000 to run this cluster for 12 seconds.

AzzyHN··on ChatGPT Search
This is just the next step of SEO. Or, I guess, the next step against SEO
AzzyHN··on New iMac with M4
Deep discount on the M3, imo. That $500 ($1500 on sale vs $2000 new) is better spent on more RAM, or non-Apple products.

If you're using an Intel-based Mac, it really is a huge jump. Intel Macs are basically just really poorly cooled laptops, making them worse, performance-wise

AzzyHN··on Opera will always help you block ads natively
Fun fact, the built-in adblocker for GAMER BROWSER OperaGX (of YouTube sponsorship game) excludes search engine pages by default, and is happy to report "zero trackers" on google.com

But I'm glad Opera is committed to providing a terrible product. The marketing seems to be working!

AzzyHN··on Bitwarden SDK relicensed from proprietary to GPLv3
VaultWarden is great. But I don't use it, because I trust Bitwarden's infrastructure more than my own, for now at least.
