AtomicOrbital··on German state planning to switch 25,000 PCs to LibreOffice
I have been using linux for decades without any need to revert to Microsoft windows ... No excuses hold water on any org to continue to cowtow to "requiring Microsoft windows"
AtomicOrbital··on Ask HN: Photography Hacks
focus stacking ... capture a series of photos each with a different distance in focus then in post processing synthesize a single photo from the portions of each which is most in focus ... heavily used for microscope image capture where depth of field is minute ... another is high dynamic imaging ( HDR ) which is a similar bracketing of several exposures each with a different shutter speed of each image captures maximum detail in a different exposure level ... if you wish to combine both of these tricks into a single output image where you use say a bracket of 4 exposures for the focus stacking and say 5 for the hdr then total necessary photos would be 4 * 5 meaning 20 separate photos
AtomicOrbital··on White House calls for solar to be nearly half of electricity supply by 2050
Today it's illegal to install diy water power experiments in rivers which is a throwback to ancient times when rivers were transport routes ... It's time people force the government to wake up and act responsibly with the foresight needed to encourage such changes
AtomicOrbital··on Discord has won over gamers. Now it wants everybody else
Bravo ... discord client on Ubuntu has never crashed or sat there using 100% of cpu doing nothing unlike Teams
AtomicOrbital··on Math opens up a variety of rewarding careers intellectually and financially
Ian Stewart has inspired generations of young minds to the pure magic of math ... math can give a glimpse of the sublime ... reality is by definition unknowable however math is the best tool mankind has yet created to engage directly with the structure of this unknowable fabric ... do not poo poo Dr Stewart until after you have read a few of this works and more importantly after thinking about and doing some maths especially at a level where you are totally frustrated yet soldier on for months or years until you achieve some results ... do not discount the sublime and remain in the mundane forever
AtomicOrbital··on Where Is the World’s Best Weather? (2020)
Folks need to appreciate lush vibrant green vegetation where frequent rain is encouraged ... perhaps motivated by lifelong hiking every few days ... so for me Mediterranean climate is way too dry and barren
AtomicOrbital··on Unleaded Avgas Approved
As a child I grew up in a 200 year old house which had many coats of exterior lead paint ... evidently the lead paint chips are sweet tasting ... my parents have memories scolding us kids to stop eating the paint chips

AtomicOrbital··on Japanese government is selling houses for $500 to populate rural areas
It's very much a global phenomenon ... Above a threshold towns get bigger below that towns depopulate ... Yet with remote work this slows however once satellite internet service becomes pervasive worldwide there will be a mad rush to move to remote locations of natural beauty ... in Columbia there is a beach with a massive snow top mountain which will be an attractive remote work hotspot
AtomicOrbital··on Please fix the AWS free tier before somebody gets hurt
You are correct, which makes it even more pernicious that Amazon chooses to not fix this ... profits at any cost is not a long term benefit ... the longer AWS fails to fix this more folks will tend to lean toward the competition especially Azure ... I have been a unix/linux server side developer since the beginning and always use a linux laptop so no fan of Microsoft however their Azure platform is lightyears ahead of AWS ... its obvious the AWS console web front end needs a wholescale rewrite from the bottom up ... again as you say its not a priority probably because all big consumers never use the AWS console as they have written their own automation layer atop the AWS SDK
AtomicOrbital··on Jaguar Land Rover to suspend output due to chip shortage
Doing computation in hardware is lightening fast and highly desirable on mobile devices however this chip shortage for vehicles would get resolved if the computation on those chips was shifted into software and executed on commodity x64 cpu hardware ... possibly expedited if the computation intended to get run on these hard to obtain chips already has a software level simulation solution ... would be interested in learning of any show stoppers to this proposed solution ... turnaround time to go this route would be worth it especially since it eliminates such a chip shortage in the future ... is it that much simpler to implement computation in purpose built hardware than software ?
AtomicOrbital··on So You Want to Learn Physics, Second Edition
WOW so we have our summer readings and then sum
AtomicOrbital··on The Beauty of Bresenham's Algorithm (2016)
back in 1991 I took an assembly language course where we where given boilerplate code on how to draw a point on the screen with a two week assignment to do anything graphical ... for the first 5 days I battled to implement Bresenham's Algorithm so I could draw a line segment ... once working the sky's the limit ... I handed in assembly lang code which drew a stick figure which held up a banner of the university ... it then drew same figure with arms and legs at a half step apart which I animated so it appeared to walk across the screen ... to give it some pizazz I had the stick figure walk around a circle and implemented perspective projection so it become shorter when walking toward the back side of the circle and larger as it approached the front ... with ability to draw a line one can unleash unbounded potential
AtomicOrbital··on America’s bald eagle population continues to soar
in that recording the eagle was just chatting not in an aggressive attack mode so its not a screech sound
AtomicOrbital··on DIY microscope lenses on BMD pocket 6K camera
Focus stacking is great and so is high dynamic range imaging so to use both requires N by M images where N is number of focus stacking images and M number of hdr images plus the software to combine those into one output images
AtomicOrbital··on The state of Linux on desktop in 2020
I have been running various linux distros on laptop/desktop/servers since I was in diapers and can say they are very stable and ready for the masses ... Ubuntu 20.04 is a solid choice ... whenever a neighbor moans about their slow PC I convince them to allow me to cut over to a fully Ubuntu box to free them from the malaise of those two legacy OS choices ( MS and osx ) ... all it takes is courage to take the leap ... long live linux
AtomicOrbital··on Group sues Apple for allowing Telegram on App Store, claim has 'hateful content'
De-platforming these end to end encrypted apps is probably getting backed by fed gov because they cannot snoop everything as they do on all other communication apps
AtomicOrbital··on We don't need data scientists, we need data engineers
I worked for 15 years as a software engineer at Morgan Stanley where they valued the process of taking a 3 martini lunch idea into a production platform so value of engineers was recognized and rewarded as such ... its somewhat easier to whip up a new financial wrinkle its a whole other level of magic to design and implement that idea when it takes 60 software developers 3 years to get that idea to market before the rest of the street ... of course the IT department was/is the largest budgeted portion at the entire bank and for a good reason
AtomicOrbital··on Ex-product manager at Google about why Google Cloud Platform lost to AWS
he also posted it as a blog here today on HN
AtomicOrbital··on Ask HN: How can a person be more playful?
step one shut off the tv its a vacuous waste of precious time ... dig out those primary school play things like blank sheets of paper and crayons, drawing is fun for everyone ... talk to your neighbors, invite them over for dinner or just a chat, bake bread and share with neighbors it instills good will and its fun to bake ... get creative when cooking its easy, fun and an endless source of play ... find some water color paint or make your own paint from household items and futz about with water color painting ... get into writing long hand using pen and paper its super stimulating, writing is a great way to reward the creative forces within ... talk to strangers are the grocery shop or better yet frequent farmers markets and support your local producers ... teach yourself some idea you have been mulling about for years but never found time to pursue ... sing to your kids when you are not reading out loud with them

AtomicOrbital··on Ask HN: How to find “senior” jack of all trades jobs?
teach yourself linux ... rent a remote linux server ( VPS ) on say ovh.com or any vps hosting provider ... learn how to spin up a server on a cloud provider ( aws, google cloud ) ... pickup containers like docker ... learn TLS cert as well as DNS registrar ... on a DNS registrar get yourself a toy domain name like myname.com ... write a tiny server in golang then bundle it into a docker container which you execute on a remote cloud provider ... define the IP of remote host to link to the DNS of your domain name so you are able to enter into a browser this domain url so your browser now talks to your own server you just deployed ... do this manually then learn programming ( golang and bash ) so you can automate all of above steps
AtomicOrbital··on China's social credit system is both unique and part of a global trend
innovation is the main driver of economic liftoff and when folks are punished for deviating from accepted norms they are squashing those same fountainhead people who sprout breakthroughs ... a smothering government is killing the golden goose ... such short leash monitoring and punishment may sound good in the short run however china elite know their authoritarian approach is doomed and are scrambling to forestall their downfall
AtomicOrbital··on It could be possible to transfer data through gravitational waves (2018)
Purely because it is so difficult to modulate gravitational waves it's a great medium through which Uber tech societies could communicate
AtomicOrbital··on One Year with ThinkPad and Linux (From MacBook Pro)
all my laptops/servers run linux and I too have noticed Docker run on osx is just not the same smooth tool as when run on a linux host although Docker was far worse on osx until a year or two ago ... to me the fixation people have for osx is purely inertia and over time the linux laptop will continue to gain converts from the Apple fan clubbers
AtomicOrbital··on China is now blocking all language editions of Wikipedia (2019)
I have software engineer co-workers who have to battle the nightmare caused by the Great Chinese Firewall everyday and they are sick of living in China ... personally I could not stand working there either ... one day this will change
AtomicOrbital··on Popular seafood species in sharp decline around the world
Ian Urbina, investigative reporter, has written a book and published articles describing a fleet of 800 industrial fish boats from china who are illegally poaching catch from North Korea waters ... fallout is a devastating drop in squid partly due to these chinese boats catching squid as they migrate to their spawning grounds ( caught before they breed ) which is extremely short sighted and illegal ... also hundreds of ghost fishing boats from North Korea washing up on Japanese shores with dead crew ... I suggest you read up on Ian Urbina's work
