AstroJetson··on Sustainable Web Interest Group Is Formed
Reading this and replying on a 2014 IPad Air. About 70% of the sites I goto work just fine. Oddly, about 1/2 of GitHub works. Old.reddit works, FB is horribly broke. So it’s clearly a resource thing. The more complicated the Javascript, the worse things run.

So it’s not only the resources needed by page, but that older devices end up in landfills.

AstroJetson··on Visualizing binary files with ImHex's DSL, the "pattern language"
+1 for the 010 editor. It comes with a number of pre-built binary templates, I use the sqlite one all the time. A recent upgrade got syntax coding by the tree-sitter environment, which is a great upgrade. Highly recommended.https://www.sweetscape.com/010editor/

It's an aftermarket track. I bought it because the track comes in 50 inch pieces that can be connected together. I custom built the three sleds (Circular saw, Jig Saw and Router) to use the track as support. But there isn't anything from stopping you from using the track as a long straight edge and sliding the shoe of all the tools along it. It just takes a little finesse to keep the power tool tight to the slide and not let it wobble off.

The three sleds took about 45 mins to make the first one (fiddle-fiddle-fiddle-some-more-fiddle) and then the other two took about 15 mins each.

AstroJetson··on 98.css – A design system for building faithful recreations of old UIs
This is pretty cool, sadly the sites that it uses to show the examples in action are long gone.
AstroJetson··on 98.css – A design system for building faithful recreations of old UIs
This is weirdly compelling. I have some retro info that I've wanted to put in a small website, this may be the thing that pushes it into the active list.

Thanks!

* Panel Saw: Large rack that can hold an entire sheet of plywood (4x8 or EU size 5x5) Saw runs on a tube/sled that lets you cut up / down on the plywood sheet. To make horizontal cuts the saw is rotated 90 degrees. On some panel saws the entire tube and slide will slide from left to right on the saw. On less expensive panel saws there will be a series of rollers along the bottom that lets a panel roll with the fixed saw making the cut. Most panel saws are mounted to walls. I've seen smaller panel saws that can be rolled around (panel sits at a 30 degree angle)

In my shop I have a track that my circular saw, jig saw and router can use for long pieces. I can break full sheets of plywood down. I use foam board insulation. Either on the floor for breaking down a full sheet, or for smaller pieces I put foamboard on my 3x5' workbench.

I have a Mitre saw that I use for small 8" crosscuts. For bigger crosscuts back to the track.

All of my tools are Dewalt 20v tools so I don't need to wrangle cables. The only think I can't do easily is rip small widths of long pieces.

AstroJetson··on What sank the Bayesian superyacht in Italy?
Hi, 45' boat owner here. Steps are pull the boat out by travel lift and block it. Power wash the bottom. Put up dust barrier. Don tyvek suit and mask. Sand with dust hose. Power wash the bottom. Paint first coat. Dry. Paint Second coat. Dry. Lift boat move blocking pads. Paint pad area. Dry. Paint Second coat. Dry. Launch boat by travel lift. Paint is $320 per gallon I need 2 gallons and a quart. Total time is 2 days if they hustle, 3 if the pull is late in the day. Lucky for me, they have not found blisters or any thing that takes fiberglass work, that adds time.

Last time I had it done it was $6450 including tax. 7 boat bucks.

AstroJetson··on What sank the Bayesian superyacht in Italy?
A “boat buck” Is $1000. How much was the bottom paint? All up pretty cheap, 7 boat bucks.

Boats are just holes in the water that your throw money into.

AstroJetson··on Mega Millions tickets will climb to $5, but officials promise better odds
I play when it gets above $200 million. For $2 a go I get to run fantasies about taking that closed Sears store and turning it into a multi-floor maker space. Classes in sewing, cooking, finance, woodworking, welding, robotics, drones, 3D printing, computer programming, etc.

Unlikely that I'll toss a $5 down to do that.

AstroJetson··on Goodbye Windows 7
XP was OK, but Win7 was great. I have a number of systems that still run Windows 7 and they are chugging along just fine.
AstroJetson··on Idiomatic Awk (2010)
AWK now supports CSV files from Excel. I’ve used it a few times and have been pretty happy with it. Have you tried that?

AstroJetson··on DeskPad – A virtual monitor for screen sharing
I have a 2014 iPad Air with a zagg clamshell keyboard that I love. I would like to have a new browser for it, this version of Safari has been deprecated from Discord and Discus forums.

Can you say some more about this, what kind of file format do you want? JSON? XML?

AstroJetson··on Popular Science Magazine Archives, May 1872-March 2009
I built and still use Ken Issac’s superchair from PopSci. It’s been great to have everything in arms length. Added things like Lights (and upgrades to LED). Pop Sci and the sister Mechanics Illustrated were the best.
AstroJetson··on How do archivists package things? The battle of the boxes
Me too. But I will pass on that transparent packing (boxes, bags, etc) is the way to go. I’ll pack smaller items in zip lock bags (they come in sizes from “snack” to 4 gallon) then they go in transparent boxes. It’s amazing that being able to see into makes finding thing so much faster. I’ve also found that hanging jewelry bags are awesome for parts storage in a closet. Good luck on your journey.
AstroJetson··on VCU – See and chat with all users browsing the same website at the same time
Tried this for about 10 mins and then figured out that it was publishing my browser history on the VCU site. So pretty much done with that for now.

Just the last sentence. I can see the WiFi manager, you never need to leave the writing app to connect to the nearest wifi.

AstroJetson··on Warewoolf: A minimalist novel-writing system/rich text editor
But to be honest as I move from my lonely writer's garret to Starbucks for character ideas, being able to wrangle the free Wi-fi is important. It is kind of cool that you can be self sufficient inside the editor, so I'll give partial points for minimalist.

But I agree, not really the thing you expect to see in the top 10 list of "features". Now if I could read my mail from inside the editor .... /s

AstroJetson··on AT&T's Hobbit Microprocessor (2023)
I’m always surprised that when people talk about stack computers they don’t mention the Burroughs B55/65/67/7700 and A Series computers. They ran Algol (pre C) super fast.

It could use some work for the USA. I'm in the better Wilmington, the one in Delaware. But it doesn't seem to want to let me use Delaware vs North Carolina.

So needs City/State/Country for the US.

Angel helped make a kite. It was a huge surprise. Very cool program, not helpful to today's billable hours.
AstroJetson··on Programming the Convergent WorkSlate's spreadsheet microcassette future
History on Ebay has them popping up. Check with the InfoAge Science Center, 2201 Marconi Rd., Wall, New Jersey, 07719. The Burroughs plant that supported them (Flemington) gave all that stuff away when they ended that product line.
AstroJetson··on Programming the Convergent WorkSlate's spreadsheet microcassette future
Yep, they were very much on the cutting edge. There was a ton of flexibility in how the systems set up. The networking part was very well done, you could have main units with disks, printers, etc. and use the remotes on people's desks. But as all things cool, they were expensive and ran face into lower cost PC's.

I used the telcom features, you could "talk" to another WorkSlate and exchange files, and use it as a terminal. At the time I worked for Burroughs and we had access to the full range of Convergent products. I don't know how much was Convergent stock or had been adapted by Burroughs to fit into the Convergent workstations we used/sold.
AstroJetson··on Programming the Convergent WorkSlate's spreadsheet microcassette future
I had one of these when they came out. It truly was a marvel at the time. I used it all the time as my side machine. It was great as a spreadsheet machine, it wasn't fast but it could run very decent financial models.

This article is the best I've ever seen about how the 'slate worked. It's super long, but really does a nice job on the technology.
