Aspos··on H-1B program grew 81 percent from 2011 to 2022
I understand there are some exceptions made for academic institutions so these companies employ people into a "participating university" for a token number of hours per month, person comes in and once they are in the country they can pursue different opportunities to get employed and change their status.

This cap-exempt H1B bypasses lottery, can be obtained in about 3 months any time during the year.

Aspos··on H-1B program grew 81 percent from 2011 to 2022
What about cap-exempt H1Bs? There are tons of new companies which streamlined the process and which are offering "nearly-guaranteed H1B with no lottery"

One can trap an experienced seniour dev for a few years for a price of a fresh grad which may or may not turn out to be a valuable resource and which may leave at any moment. In this context quality of the grad is not much relevant.

I'll sacrifice a goat in Jupiter's temple for you.

I feel irrational hatred towards people who think "decimated" is a synonym of "destroyed".
Aspos··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (June 2025)
Cant it be a VBA script interfaced to an external app? This way you could use standard Excel, no?
Aspos··on Timdle – Place historical events in chronological order
"Ireland Wins Six Nations Grand Slam" is such an obscure, hyper-local event which should be a part of localization I guess. I understood every word, but not the whole sentence.
Aspos··on How to modify Starlink Mini to run without the built-in WiFi router
AFAIK US DoD pays for some of the Starlink accounts in Ukraine. The rest are paid for by volunteers at normal prices.

I know exactly what power-constrained application you have in mind, Oleg, and I like it.
Aspos··on Show HN: Air Lab – A portable and open air quality measuring device
I use Broan ERVS100S and Panasonic FV-04VE1
Aspos··on Show HN: Air Lab – A portable and open air quality measuring device
I have a CO2 sensor mounted right next to the vent of my ERV which pulls in fresh air regularly so the sensor gets calibrated automatically.
Aspos··on An interview question that will protect you from North Korean fake workers
Not sure what you suggest with this factoid. We hire the cheapest out of multiple equally qualified candidates.
Aspos··on An interview question that will protect you from North Korean fake workers
I suspect one of my hires may have been North Korean. He passed all the interviews and asked for less compensation than the others, so we hired him. He avoided calls but otherwise did excellent work for about a week — until our KYC and payroll provider flagged him as a fraud.
Aspos··on Raspberry Pi Lidar Scanner
Yaw drift is my problem, so I tried a bunch of IMUs. Ones built around BNO055 seem to be alright and they are not that much more expensive. I ended up using Adafruit's.
Aspos··on Raspberry Pi Lidar Scanner
GY-521 in particular and MPU6050 in general make quite poor IMUs. Why do you use them? And what for in this particular case? What do they do in this set up?
Aspos··on Brazil's government-run payments system has become dominant
And its not a far-fetched example as both VISA/MC actually have a history of effectively banning legitimate businesses for no particular reason.
Aspos··on A university president makes a case against cowardice
This is a dangerous axiom which will take you to wrong conclusions. Elected officials may be better, more efficient and less corrupt at a local level, but this does not scale.
Aspos··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
How about zipping the state string or, even better, putting it into a KV storage thus exchanging it for a 10-char string.
Aspos··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (March 2025)
Awesome. Would suggest considering a built-in URL shortener.
Aspos··on The Origin of the Pork Taboo
One does not need a microscope to see a parasite. People were well aware of meat-borne parasites. Salmonella is invisible to a naked eye, true.

Yes, they are meaningful. For example: Adjective + some natural phenomena + some flower = girl name.

May it be that laser bounced off exhaust plume?
Aspos··on My Scammer Girlfriend: Baiting a Romance Fraudster
There are quite a few pre-Islamic taboos some of which persist to this day. For example, can't give a child a name of a living person parents know of. This of course includes extended family, friends and even acquaintances. This restriction alone enforces creative naming.

Typically names consist of 1-5 elements which can be combined arbitrarily. There are literally thousands of such elements though.

Last name often is a first name of an ancestor a few generations deep and it is likely to be unique too.

So as a result first+last name combinations are quite unique.

Urbanization is changing all this of course but some traditions are still strong. In my entire life I've met just 3 people with the same first name as mine.

Aspos··on My Scammer Girlfriend: Baiting a Romance Fraudster
Sounds clearly Russian to me. Russian spoken in Yoshkar-Ola I guess.
Aspos··on My Scammer Girlfriend: Baiting a Romance Fraudster
Kazakh names are typically unique planet-wide. There is a very, very low chance of there being another person with the same name. Chances of finding another person with the same name and the same year of birth are practically zero.

Edit: Seems like this particular combination is not unique after all. Found quite a few people of the same name. Perhaps they chose a victim which can't be found trivially.

Aspos··on Launch HN: Pinch (YC W25) – Video conferencing with immersive translation
Impressive demo! Note that on 01:46 it says "You can speak Korean" in Ukrainian lol.
Aspos··on Show HN: I built a DIY plane spotting system at home
Those red-green navigation lights are enough. There is only one aircraft position which would satisfy a given relative configuration. PI camera has a known field of view and given hundreds of images one could have directions converging pretty accurately.
Aspos··on Koa – Next generation web framework for Node.js
Just a few first instalments used generators, yes, but all the subsequent releases do not, ever since await was introduced in JS.

Koa is awesome.
