Ashanmaril··on An impersonator issued a fake Reddit take down notice against SaveVideo
Bad moderation can also drive away good people and good discussion.

I still tend to keep up with most Android news on /r/android but the mods there went super full crackdown on moderation the past several years, constantly removing threads for minor infractions of the rules, and breaking up good discussion in the comments section of a post because the OP was breaking some rule or another.

Ashanmaril··on My trust in software, an all time low
A computer is nothing to most people without compatible applications
Ashanmaril··on My trust in software, an all time low
You won't get all content on PC though because not every game gets ported there.

I think a lot of people are pretty happy with a PC + Switch combo, since there's straight up no hope of Nintendo porting their games to PC in any time soon. And a Switch is relatively inexpensive (especially if you go for the Lite model)

Sony also has a lot of exclusives on their systems (Bloodborne, Spider-Man, Uncharted, Last of Us, God of War, etc)

Ashanmaril··on My trust in software, an all time low
> The fact that Linux is still underrepresented on the desktop just shows that we're willing to put up with it to get the shiny thing.

I don't know if I would call Windows a "shiny thing." It's cemented as the standard because of years of backwards compatibility.

Ashanmaril··on The cost of the “new way to message on instagram” (2020)
This article doesn't even mention how horrible the implementation is, too. It didn't merge your conversations with a person into a single thread across Facebook Messenger and Instagram. Instead it created 4 permutations of threads with a person.

* Your Messenger + Friend's Messenger

* Your Instagram + Friend's Instagram

* Your Messenger + Friend's Instagram

* Your Instagram + Friend's Messenger

Each of these conversations will result in a new, separate thread, even if your Facebook and Instagram accounts are linked. It's such a mess.

Ashanmaril··on LinkedIn breach reportedly exposes data of 92% of users, inferred salaries
That's good to know. And it seems like there's a good handful of other people with similar experiences (though that could be bias of the type of people who would be in a thread about linkedin)

Maybe I won't discount it. The dark patterns of the site are just such a turn-off, it really doesn't make a great case for itself in the UX.

Ashanmaril··on LinkedIn breach reportedly exposes data of 92% of users, inferred salaries
Is LinkedIn actually an important thing to have?

I made one years ago and used to occasionally go in and update it, but with my most recent job I didn't even take the time to add it. The past few years I've really re-evaluated what should be public, easily-accessible information for anyone who knows my name.

And all I get from having an account is recruiter spam, and emails for connection requests that are oddly written in first-person and have the person's name as the sender which seems weird.

Ashanmaril··on Virtual DOM is pure overhead (2018)
> This article avoids the fact that declarative programming has proven to be more pleasant for most people.

No it doesn't. Second-to-last paragraph:

"It's important to understand that virtual DOM isn't a feature. It's a means to an end, the end being declarative, state-driven UI development. Virtual DOM is valuable because it allows you to build apps without thinking about state transitions, with performance that is generally good enough. That means less buggy code, and more time spent on creative tasks instead of tedious ones."

Ashanmaril··on The Lightness of Windows
Did we watch the same Windows 11 announcement? It was horribly cringey and corporate.

I swear at one point a presenter said something like “the start button is in the center because the product puts you at the center,” and assertions about how Windows enhances how you "engage with the product"

Ashanmaril··on Moving from Hey to Fastmail
I mainly just want out of Gmail because all of my internet accounts are tied to that address and it's known that your account could just be terminated by a bot for no reason and the only way to get it back is to make a stink on social media until a Google employee with connections sees it and takes the time to bang on some doors during their lunch break.

I'll probably switch to Fastmail and get an address set up with my personal domain so I'm not tied to any service. But yeah, as a service I don't really have any issues with Gmail.

Ashanmaril··on Moving from Hey to Fastmail
Just this week I started looking into Gmail alternatives (as well as de-Googling myself as much as possible) and while I haven't pulled the trigger on anything yet, Fastmail is looking like the top contender at the moment.

Hey was on the table for a bit, but no matter how much I read about their alternative workflow, I just don't understand how it would be an improvement over my typical method of archiving emails as I get through them. My email is essentially just a to-do list. Once I've dealt with something, into the archive it goes, and I don't think about it again unless it shows up in a search result when I'm looking for something later.

I've just never had a problem with it so I don't see a need to reinvent the wheel and learn a new method of using email.

Ashanmaril··on Google extends third party cookie deadline until late 2023
Isn't it our jobs as the people who understand these things and are implementing the technologies to not take advantage of the fact that most people using them are ignorant to how this stuff works?

I wouldn't expect the people who built bridges to install technology that secretly tracked you every time you crossed over them.

Ashanmaril··on Microsoft is bringing Android apps to Windows 11
Stop being so intentionally obtuse, you know what I mean
Ashanmaril··on Microsoft is bringing Android apps to Windows 11
Actually, in some cases mobile apps are higher quality than desktop versions. Mainly because the standard for mobile is to make native apps for the platform, while on desktop everything is Electron
Ashanmaril··on HTML Data List Element
> And what happens after 10 years when new UI trends become popular and we need new ui elements?

Design trends change, but the basic components that make up form elements have remained the same. We still have buttons, text fields, check boxes, radio buttons, etc. Those aren't going anywhere.

Ashanmaril··on Did Windows 10 slow down with each feature update?
I built my mom a moderate Windows PC for her accounting work a few years ago. Pretty standard Intel build, no graphics card cause it's not like she needs that.

And for the most part it works fine, until every few months it'll slow down to an unusably slow crawl and I'll have to hop into task manager, see what rogue Windows service is bugging out this time, Google it, and find some forum post somewhere telling me what registry edit I have to do to disable some service that restores it to full speed.

Ashanmaril··on Git undo: We can do better
The Jetbrains IDE git GUI is by far the best git GUI I've used, I feel lost trying to use git without it.

There's a user request that's been sitting around for a while to pull it out into a dedicated application, which I could personally get behind since we have one project at work that's pretty difficult to run outside of Eclipse

Ashanmaril··on Ask HN: Have you found a good desk chair?
I bought myself a moderately expensive chair last year after using cheap little computer chairs my whole life. It's a Secret Lab Omega and... meh.

Didn't change my life. Even like half a year later, sometimes I'll touch an area under the chair that's constantly covered in oil and makes my fingers black, even though i've wiped it down several times. The left arm rest has a long crack across the length. And I found it bizarre that when you assemble it, the main part of the chair just plops down onto the roller base, and doesn't actually click in anywhere, so if you were to lift it up vertically the base would fall off.

Later on I bought an Autonomous standing desk and it felt like a much better investment. I think no matter what kind of chair you get, if you're sitting all day every day, you're gonna have back problems. I'm still getting used to it, but if you have the option, I'd go for a sit-stand desk over a chair.

Ashanmaril··on Employees are quitting instead of giving up working from home
Yeah, all of that stuff is WAY worse over screensharing/calls.

Being able to turn your head over to a coworker and say "hey take a look at this" and they take a few steps over to see your monitor is much less of a hassle than ringing their computer for a video call and screensharing which may be better or worse depending on either of your internet connections.

Not to mention depending on your monitor sizes it might not even work properly. i.e. if you're using a larger monitor where everything is rendered smaller so more can fit on screen, it will probably be too small for them to see on their laptop. And in the case of ultrawide monitors, just give up the idea of screensharing on that entirely. At least if you use Teams where you can't share a portion of your screen. -- only the entire thing, or a single window which has problems of its own. Oh and Teams doesn't even let you draw on the other person's screen so they can't point to things!

Alright this is turning into a Teams rant now.

Ashanmaril··on Cities with the Best Work-Life Balance 2021
The title makes it sound like it's the top 40 best cities but it looks to actually just be 40 big cities ranked in order.
Ashanmaril··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Google Photos?
The earlier Google Pixel phones included free unlimited original quality backup of photos/videos, but in recent phone generations they dropped that, and they also confirmed future Pixel phones won't even get free unlimited compressed backups.
Ashanmaril··on Twitter confirms Twitter Blue
>Is there no consequence on twitter for this type of stuff?

Ideally there would be social consequences for stuff like this, but there's absolutely no risk in trying to drum up lynch mobs against people online, but there is potential career benefit to be gained.

Ashanmaril··on App Store Arguments
We're also now reaching the point where the game consoles that first enabled purchasing games digitally are having their storefronts taken down, and suddenly everyone is realizing that their hundreds or even thousands of dollars in digital purchases can just be revoked on a whim.

Ashanmaril··on Learn CSS
> Tailwind is basically a cleaner way to do everything as inline styles.

I'd say that's underselling it. For one thing it keeps you within a design system. By default you're given spacing that works in increments of 0.25rem, a handful of colors, etc to work with (which can be replaced/extended) so you have to go out of your way to break the design system that's in place.

Also inline styles don't allow for hover, focus, @media, etc. Which were always a pain in the ass with normal CSS anyway. Using Tailwind was the first time I didn't find writing a responsive UI to be a giant hassle. You just design for mobile and then for anything that needs to change on bigger screens you put a sm: or lg: or whatever breakpoint style and you're done.
