That being a possible reason why certain words alleviate, they actually operate at a different level in our conciousness.

ArtRichards··on Ask HN: What hacks/tips do you use to make AI work better for you?
In Cursor I try to mention specifically and only the files where the changes need to be made.

Also, I use HomeAssistant for my Dreame vacuum, Hue lights, electricity monitoring, all hooked up with a chat GPT plugin and TTS STT... its the default assistant on my phone and watch!

Over a year ago it was the only way to get GPT assistant, but now I prefer it :) i can customize it as needed through 'homeass'

ArtRichards··on Bob Metcalfe wins Turing Award
I think around 2011, they offered the first UT Longhorns Startup course, it was cool and hip and new, and they'd flown in mentors from SV and other places, so I figured, why not?

So, after applying, I had shown up at a hotel near campus. While waiting in the lobby, playing with their unsecured wifi, a rather distinguished looking gentleman came up to me, and asked, Hey are you here for the Startup Course interviews?

Yeah...

Well, why are you here in the lobby?

Well, I was told to wait here, and its been a half hour nobody called me.

He gave me a look, direct in the eyes, and said, oh, really? And you're just going to sit here and wait?

I was dumbfounded. Of course, it made sense, but it felt.. I didn't want to piss off the organizers, right?'

"Go in there, and get it!" as he clawed the air like a tiger. Damn, he was right.

So i ambled in, looked around, found a seat near the guy organizing (Josh Baer, another awesome guy) introduced myself and sat at a table by myself, just waiting for an in...

Then the gentleman from the lobby came in and sat in front of me, with a big grin.

Hi?

Hi.

You're a part of this?

Yes, my name's Bob Metcalfe.

Cool, thanks for the pep talk. So, whats your story?

Well, I founded 3Com, and helped come up with Ethernet.

Oh... damn.. cool..

...And my life has never been the same since!

If you read this, thanks Bob.

ArtRichards··on What Is Web3?
I find it interesting that some sibling comments decry web3 and cryptocurrencies as scams. 'Crypto' doesn't scam people, scammers do. Crypto (currencies, web3, dao, defi, etc) makes it very very easy to move money or value in a way which cannot be controlled. This is a great property for those who value this ideal, and for others is frightening and disheartening. It really depends on where you place responsibility for managing your own opportunities: individual or society. Similarly, the scam aspect comes in for the difficulty of understanding the implications of your actions. Is this smart contract really doing what I expect it to? Well, how much do you invest in finding the answer to this question? I'd rather it be a question of capability, than trust. I can never know all that a bank or government does to ensure my dollars or euros are safe. Is that ideal? I don't know, but I appreciate that there is an alternative.
ArtRichards··on The Metaphysics of Morrowind (2010)
I really appreciated this deep dive into how the writers of the game wove an exploration of the meaning of gaming into the lore and story of their games.

>CHIM is the realisation that your entire world, everything you experience, does not really exist. It exists as the dream of a power, which, since it must be called something, is called God. Everything that exists is just part of the dream of God, including yourself. You are just a tiny fraction of the Godhead, that has managed to gain a modicum of self-awareness.

ArtRichards··on Tech investors can’t get enough of Europe’s fizzing startup scene
In general, as an individual entrepreneur/'business owner'/selbstandiger in germany, and also in the US, its neigh impossible in Germany to perform your own accounting/tax filings; and the idea of an LLC is very difficult to obtain (see how companies like Starbucks structure their limited liability with an 'AG & Co. KG')

Combine this with the lack of 'safety net' for someone who owns the business (you dont qualify the same as if you were a regular non participatory employee) and the lack of angel funding/froth in general... its not as simple as you may imagine, especially for non citizens.

Its possible, but its not as simple :)

ArtRichards··on The crypto movement is destroying itself
There was a time in 2014/15 where paying for goods with cryptocurrency was becoming popular. Its at this time when coincidentally, regulations towards requiring PII was instantiated in the US, essentially freezing most in/outroads of fiat. It was the end of traded goods for crypto. This coincided with many of the original arguments on how & whether to increase transaction capacity (bitcoin cash debate), we see who influenced these (core devs/miners/exchanges/regulatory reps sponsored by banks) and how they played out in hindsight. I'm not saying this was a coordinated effort, rather an oversimplification of the natural response from traditional fiat participants towards a threat to the 'status quo' at the time. However, this shift, happening at the most crucial tipping point, is what I believe to be the end of the ideal 'cryptorevolution' and instead a new compromise with the existing system. These disruptions were 'successful' But.. you know... thats just my opinion.. man...

ArtRichards··on Ask HN: Is startup PTSD real and possible?
Specific criteria set out by the DSM, the most recent version of which is essentially a checklist of symptoms for doctors to classify mental health on behalf of insurance companies for billing and labeling purposes. As a layperson, undiagnosed and untreated for any 'mental illness', and in my personal opinion, every new edition of this 'psychologists bible' demonstrates to me the entire point is quickly getting lost, and serves a different master than the wellbeing of patients. Its confirmation bias for my decision to go into technology rather than psychology, so take this with a grain of salt.
ArtRichards··on Git is too hard
Yes I agree there are issues with git, and this may be a great solution!

But the github cli tool being pushed on github as the defacto user interface feels like internet explorer all over again.

And this media flurry at the same time as the switch on github away from ssl links is disheartening, frightening, and just another example of Microsoft's fingerprints on this product and our ecosystem.

Combined with the recent DMCA takedown fiasco... I cannot wait until if or when web 3.0 decentralization makes these problems non issues.

ArtRichards··on Client-side content encryption
While not appreciating the use of encryption to paywall services, ultimately its the responsibility of the content provider. If the author of an article contributes their content to a publisher who uses this method of encryption, thats up to the content creator; and then I would hope sites like this would just stop linking to them.

In reality, this is a major paradigm shift, as it provides a way forward for peer 2 peer hosted content. Imagine that instead of sending the key and providing access, rather your access is based on some other out of band validation system, such that another peer controls your access to their content.

Very exciting, but of course this particular perversion of google with AMP is more abuse of technology, solving a problem of publishers at the expense of freedom of information.

Thanks! Honestly im looking to find a different niche than the standard module by including literally everything. I hope to mke it as fun for the DM to experience on the fly as the players. Does that make sense? Basically for people who dont have alot of XP or Time to be able to run a game for their friends.

ArtRichards··on The Lost Caverns of Tsojconth – Gary Gygax’s first published D&D module
This is super cool, I love seeing the history of modules. I recently published my first module on https://Paper-Minis.com . Its specifically for First Time DM's (or d&d players who want to run a one-shot for the group) It needs zero prep and includes minis, maps, puzzles. My experienced DM friends like not needing to go through hours to run a oneshot, and its great way to bring new groups into the fold. I wondered how many people want to become a DM or run a one-shot but can't break in, and thats why I made this :)
