ArrayBoundCheck··on Git log is not a changelog
> The purpose of a git commit message is to answer the question “why does this commit exist?”

Why? Every time I have asked this people say because you'll search the logs (which I have never done in my life) or because "it's good practice"

ArrayBoundCheck··on Lessons from Writing a Compiler
I dislike zig for lack of destructors and "no hidden control flow". I'll probably dislike your language too but is there one big thing difference from zig and austral?
ArrayBoundCheck··on When rustc explodes
So you wouldn't say you feel fearless about concurrent code?
ArrayBoundCheck··on When rustc explodes
Rough. It seems like there's a lot of poor engineering in the compiler :( I almost wonder if the new gcc backend will be better but then I remember clang is significantly faster than gcc
ArrayBoundCheck··on Zig and WASM
There's two things I always wanted to know

1. Why wasn't realloc part of the spec? When I looked at wasm and emscripten it appeared that realloc was essentially malloc+memcpy? That'd be painful when arrays are bigger than L2 or L3 cache. I think I heard arm cpu's all standardized to have virtual memory in 2005 or 2010 so I don't think arm hardware was an issue?

2. It seems like 100% of system calls would have to be implemented through javascript? Why wasn't there some things wasm implemented itself like a way to get time or rdtsc, realloc and other very common operations?

ArrayBoundCheck··on Zig and WASM
Curiosity is getting to me. Why on earth would you use wasm outside of a browser instead of a container like most people?

When you said I was wrong I knew right away you either never actually tested or you're talking about outside of the browser. If it wasn't clear I was talking about wasm in chrome/safari/firefox this entire time

ArrayBoundCheck··on Zig and WASM
Why did mods delete the post with the link showing this commenter is the one in fact making things up?
ArrayBoundCheck··on Zig and WASM
How you use it in real life has to be taken in consideration. From memory system like calls go through JS and there's no realloc. I didn't want to say it in my first comment because I notice the more someone writes the more likely others will argue. I rather someone else post the SQL benchmark but apparently everyone drank the kool aid and had no idea wasm isn't that fast. I certainly would rather use JS than write c++/rust. I wouldn't be surprised if that list of companies using wasm only use it for one or two large projects then stuck to js because of how much work wasm is
ArrayBoundCheck··on Slower Memory Zeroing Through Parallelism
I'd say something unintentional is a bug. Perhaps someone can use this in a DoS attack
ArrayBoundCheck··on Zig and WASM
Varied? You're joking they're all math

This guy found sqlite to be 19x slower. https://ricomariani.medium.com/wasm-sqlite-for-web-products-...

ArrayBoundCheck··on Zig and WASM
I'm not sure which implementation browsers use but only one engine wasn't on average < 3x slower https://medium.com/wasmer/benchmarking-webassembly-runtimes-...
ArrayBoundCheck··on Zig and WASM
> the speed is close to native

The numbers I seen suggest wasm is 3-5x slower then native which isn't bad IMO. JavaScript is also 3-5x slower than native. Is JS close to native speed? I don't think you can say it about one but not the other

ArrayBoundCheck··on A $3B Silk Road seizure will erase Ross Ulbricht’s debt
> Yes, reform the legal system sensibly. No, we don't let drug kingpins who have built up a serious crime organisation walk.

He ran a website. I don't call that a kingpin

ArrayBoundCheck··on GCC Rust Approved by GCC Steering Committee
No. LLVM is faster than GCC so most likely it'll be slower. If the way the frontend generates code for the backend is completely different then there's a chance it won't be terrible and will have reasonable build speeds. However there's a chance it'll be inconsistent with llvm output but chances are noone will notice or care if it's not buggy
ArrayBoundCheck··on A $3B Silk Road seizure will erase Ross Ulbricht’s debt
So because you pissed off someone in the government you get life in jail? That's not justice. That could be what happened but idk I hate the idea he's not getting released and IIRC he killed noone and robbed noone
ArrayBoundCheck··on A $3B Silk Road seizure will erase Ross Ulbricht’s debt
Ross got a raw deal. I think 15yrs would have been reasonable
ArrayBoundCheck··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
Lets take this silly example.

Lets say apple engineers all have kids who use tiktok and some of the kids or engineers do something shady and someone gets blackmailed. As a consequence apple launches 3months later and in the meantime someone from china launches a killer phone with the same or almost as good tech specs. Sure the apple fans may wait it out but that could be a billion dollars of sales to china that would have went to USA

That's one of the point of espionage. To get a competitive or monetary advantage. If facebook did this to other companies within the states, at least the country isn't losing money

The other would be things used to jail innocent people but for the most part I don't think thats how tiktok is being used

ArrayBoundCheck··on Uber broke laws, duped police and built lobbying operation, leak reveals
More like it's pointless to say you can't do X behavior but someone else can

You mostly need to outlaw all of it or someone will keep doing it. Going after smaller companies won't change anything

ArrayBoundCheck··on Uber broke laws, duped police and built lobbying operation, leak reveals
His point was going after newer and smaller companies is a joke when larger companies are basically getting away with murder, or more accurately doing nearly the same thing you're punishing smaller companies for doing (at a larger scale)
ArrayBoundCheck··on DRY is an over-rated programming principle?
> EVERYTHING HAS TRADEOFFS

Bullshit. What's the tradeoff on using `gets` vs any other function?

Nothing. Absolutely nothing. `gets` is wrong 100% of the time period.

If you're wrong its not a trade and a lot of things in this article and about dry is wrong

ArrayBoundCheck··on Apple previews Lockdown Mode
Same. Its too bad general browsing is nearly unusable with JS turned off.
ArrayBoundCheck··on Making IRC better
Waiting for QUIC
ArrayBoundCheck··on Making IRC better
Also who wants to run IRC on their phone? I rather not have my battery zapped by having an active internet connection
ArrayBoundCheck··on Making IRC better
The 80's called, they want their technology back
ArrayBoundCheck··on How normal am I?
It did the same for me, except I was 65% average
ArrayBoundCheck··on Zig is becoming more production-worthy
Its a great language. I suspect the problem was it tried to out java java (GC!) and it kind of tried to out C++ C++
ArrayBoundCheck··on Zig is becoming more production-worthy
You mean rust shouldn't allow easy to write out of bounds errors?

I'm still waiting for a flag to disable runtime bound checks

ArrayBoundCheck··on Is the Ride over for Uber?
Chasing? I'm pretty sure they only had regular people in regular cars give you a ride when lyft came around. They had to match the service or lose customers
ArrayBoundCheck··on V 0.3
My original comment was confirming to a poster that other people experience matches his. I never asked a (non rhetorical) question here or said anything untrue
ArrayBoundCheck··on V 0.3
> Rather than assume, you can use V and find out for yourself what works and what doesn’t.

Why would I bother? It's been shown the author says one thing while reality shows another
