ArrayBoundCheck··on Why is recruiting developers so difficult?
Some things that happened to me when I went for interview

- Refusing to tell me salary range, I stop speaking to them - Them not contacting me after my questions (salary range, vacation days, if I'm expected to do front end, etc) - Them stop contacting me when I say I am not interested in working with technology X Y and Z (usually java and mongodb, sometimes I'll ask if they use PHP then say I rather not touch it, I don't outright say I will never work with it) - They have a non technical person interview me who gets lost and think I'm bad at communicating when I can't see their face and have no idea what part I lost them - They have a technical person interview me who can't accept when I disagree with them

ArrayBoundCheck··on How fast is 12th Gen Intel Core?
Maybe it's my imagination but it seems like more cores isn't helping performance as much? Does it seem every core after 6 cores is about 1/2 or 1/3rd the performance gain?
ArrayBoundCheck··on Using unwrap() in Rust is okay
> the article specifically covers catching panics

I see 3 mentions of catch, all in the same paragraph. It says you can catch it, offers no reasons why you want to then provides an example of output when you don't

That doesn't sound like it "specifically covers catching panics"

ArrayBoundCheck··on Using unwrap() in Rust is okay
The third sentence was the point. I don't want browsers being less reliable and terminating randomly due to unwraps
ArrayBoundCheck··on Using unwrap() in Rust is okay
Does this mean using C inside of rust is ok? I'm pretty sure the original team kept hitting memory problems and it was in fact not ok. Browsers crash often enough that I don't want unwrap making it worse
ArrayBoundCheck··on To uncover a deepfake video call, ask the caller to turn sideways
People asked stuff like this 15years ago (do bunny ears on yourself or pretend to pick your nose). Usually to see if the other person is catfishing with a prerecorded video. It usually happens if the other person types instead of speaks (because it's "late" and people are sleeping)

The only thing interesting about the title is the possibility of real time deepfakes for calls. If it's not realtime then 15years ago called and they want their technique back

ArrayBoundCheck··on Git In Two Minutes (updated after 8 years)
Compare it with `git branch -a` and `git remote -v`. That's my point. Not only are they all different flags but you'll get half the data you could be getting and not know why. It's impossible to google
ArrayBoundCheck··on Git In Two Minutes (updated after 8 years)
Correct. That was a simple example that's easy to understand

Anyone with half a brain can understand that if they can't keep something as simple as printing a list consistent you better believe nothing else will be straightforward. Which is my point. NOTHING is straightforward and I haven't met a single person who likes the CLI if they do anything more complex than a commit, push and pull. I know people who still refuse to use rebase and don't understand bisect or blame. They use a GUI to restore files

ArrayBoundCheck··on Git In Two Minutes (updated after 8 years)
I wish they made a breaking change in the next version and make the CLI actually usable.

Before you downvote, ask yourself how do you list tags, branches and remote

ArrayBoundCheck··on Technical reasons to choose FreeBSD over GNU/Linux (2020)
AFAIK I and most people can't run it due to freebsd not supporting our hardware. Does it support intel wifi and GPUs? (I'm using an amd GPU). Can I run netflix or prime and get 1080 resolution? (note on linux I need to use a addon to achieve this)
ArrayBoundCheck··on Gitlab U-turns on deleting dormant projects after backlash
I'm still wondering why there isn't a bittorrent for git
ArrayBoundCheck··on We're improving search results when you use quotes
I've been using quotes in google forever ago

Google made quotes basically not do anything forever ago. But there were a few good years when it did what people wanted

ArrayBoundCheck··on Google’s video chat merger begins: Now there are two “Google Meet” apps
I'm pretty sure google jumped the shark 5years ago but somehow the pandemic caused googles stock to :rocket-ship-emoji:
ArrayBoundCheck··on How to use an iPad as a secure calling and messaging device
The OS is likely less secure than signal. Google and Apple seem to play a game of wack a mole
ArrayBoundCheck··on How to use an iPad as a secure calling and messaging device
I might get bashed for this but open source isn't secure at all. Have we had a month where no heavily used dependency gets infected?

Proprietary code that's been audited is already better then most projects

Not sure why phone number matters. Pretty much anyone can find your phone number

ArrayBoundCheck··on Formally Verifying Rust's Opaque Types
Just FUD while spreading FUD? Are you trying to say release mode doesn't have runtime checks inserted?

What I want is a check outside of the loop then every access inside a loop unchecked and fast. Which isn't what rust does. Then it throws your memory away if you did an oops and went out of bounds

ArrayBoundCheck··on Formally Verifying Rust's Opaque Types
> automatically-placed bounds checks on array accesses

That's exactly why I get annoyed. How will it be fast if it branches on every access

> where the compiler could 'prove'

The compiler doesn't prove shit. It lets the optimizer do it. It's extremely easy to fool the optimizer

> there any 'systems programming' languages

The ones that don't make false claims (so not v or rust) and don't insert code I don't want

ArrayBoundCheck··on Formally Verifying Rust's Opaque Types
Look at my username. I didn't like it since rust called themself memory safe and didn't force us to do an array bounds check. It's been 10years and they still haven't done it

(Also all the hype and fearlessness is obnoxious)

ArrayBoundCheck··on Running Zig with WASI on Cloudflare Workers
I'm uninformed. So cloudflare has workers which run wasm and the article is about zig->wasm? Why not use linux containers?
ArrayBoundCheck··on Carbon’s most exciting feature is its calling convention
Having slightly better optimizations due to changing ABI doesn't sound worth the friction of having another language in the codebase. Especially when the guys who invented it (google) is famous for sunsetting things and couldn't get their peers to use bazel, the other thing google invented

I don't care if this sounds uncharitable, I see the pitfalls and I seen so many people get sucked in to prior pitfalls

ArrayBoundCheck··on Why the term "open source" is important
Whens his OS coming out? I'm stuck in August 25 1991 and it hasn't come out yet
ArrayBoundCheck··on Carbon’s most exciting feature is its calling convention
Calling convention? That's the most exciting feature? It doesn't boost productivity, reduce compile times, offer a larger standard library or create a boost a reasonable language would provide?

No thanks google. I've been saying that for years now. You jumped the shark

ArrayBoundCheck··on WebContainers are now supported in Firefox on desktop and Android
I rather have something completely new to replace the web. It's actually stupid to fix something when 100000s of different places depend on the bad behavior. Especially when one of them is the author of the most popular browser
ArrayBoundCheck··on Google’s Nest will provide data to police without a warrant
I don't 'hate' this but how the heck would google detect something like this? Why do I feel like they're analyzing every word we say in our homes and building some kind of profile (for ad reasons). On second thought I do hate this
ArrayBoundCheck··on Am I an idiot for wanting a dumber phone?
Well if I stopped at want 2 the rest are fullfilled. 2 are maybes and one was a no notification if there are apps. There are plenty of devices with a not to spec web browser and back in the day people use to write java apps for phones which only used the java api. I thought that might be what the app situation might be if there are apps but I'm completely fine with text+contacts being the only app

Actually I forgot one more requirement. I'd like either a headphone jack (or bluetooth) and music player for when I jog

ArrayBoundCheck··on Am I an idiot for wanting a dumber phone?
Why is it $270?? Pinephone is $150-$200
ArrayBoundCheck··on Why is it so hard to give Google money?
Why would I pay google with money when I pay in user data?

They know how long my ass is in my chair and my route to various errands. They know if I bike, drive or walk there

ArrayBoundCheck··on Am I an idiot for wanting a dumber phone?
I want a dumber phone. A camera would be nice but I don't need one. All I need it to do is (how do I do a line break? 2 spaces at the end doesn't work)

- Make standard mobile phone calls and text (with a touchscreen)

- Support calls using SIP/VOIP

- Maybe an app or two, specifically signal so I can look at pictures, I don't need video to work

- No notifications (besides text when it's not on silent)

- If possible a really shitty browser that doesn't support JS but can handle searching google+wikipedia

ArrayBoundCheck··on The tar archive format, and why GNU tar extracts in quadratic time
> I decided that learning the tar file format and making my own tar extractor would probably be faster than waiting for tar. And I was right; before the day was over, I had a working tar extractor, and I had successfully extracted my 1.1TiB tarball.

That's awesome!

I once did the same thing (something else, not a tar). I was on discord at the time and typed in messages about the stupid stuff I noticed while writing my own code. A guy told me I'm an asshole and a shit programmer/personality because I wasn't willing to use stick with/figure out standard tools + blocked me. Which is weird because why wouldn't you want more tools available. I gave away my source at the end

Don't be afraid of writing your own stuff!

ArrayBoundCheck··on Embed is in C23
Implementing it without embed. With embed the author says

> It feels like I wasted a lot of my life achieving something so ridiculously basic that it’s almost laughable

Which makes me think I should never get involved with an ISO committee, not something I want done fast at least
