Arcuru··on The useful use of cat
Using `cat file.txt | ...` has always felt more natural to me, so I still use it.

If I need to build a long command I've been using the excellent `up` tool to do it, e.g. `cat file.txt | up`

Arcuru··on Gosub – An open-source browser engine
I generally agree with that..for a for profit project.

Gosub, despite have 2.6k Github stars, has a grand total of 0 sponsors. They literally take in no money. This is someone's unpaid side project.

I expect a designer would be welcome to contribute a design, just like coders can contribute code.

Sure now that it's in the news and can give them good PR, but a week ago they weren't the ones paying for it.

It's for the casual stalker. Take a picture of a woman's dog to find out the breed, then you can pretend you know it when you go chat her up.
Arcuru··on 2M users but no money in the bank
That's too bad.

I used to contribute to Exercism a lot (I'm still technically a maintainer but haven't meaningfully helped in a while), I think it was the first OSS project I contributed a large amount of effort to. I was more or less the sole maintainer for C++ for a while and also helped with the C track.

It's definitely a good service and OSS project, I recommend it a lot. Fundamentally though people don't want to pay for things that they can get for free, or they're used to getting for free.

If people actually want OSS projects to survive, you should be giving a little bit of recurring money. I set aside $XX/month to distribute to projects and I don't even work anymore.

Arcuru··on A Real Life Off-by-One Error
The climbers had complained about an issue with the belay ropes on the right side that they also fixed.

> A few of the climbers had said that the automatic belay ropes on the right hand lane did not feel right, so the cherry picker was replacing those and not the hold that I had noticed being out of place. The climbers had noticed something wasn’t quite right, but hadn’t said anything about the out of place hold.

It was probably just two separate problems.

Arcuru··on The slow evaporation of the free/open source surplus
I think that if you use OSS projects as much as the typical HN user, you should be giving money to at least some of them.

If your OSS contribution budget is $0, you're part of the problem.

The same of course applies to companies but 1000x more.

Arcuru··on Logitech has an idea for a "forever mouse" that requires a subscription
I'm generally a supporter of paying for software with a subscription if I expect to get updates...but does a mouse need updates?

htop is great, but I've migrated to bottom which has a very similar interface with "btm --basic".

You can implement a decent "forking" feature pretty easily in Matrix at least, by using Threads. My bot does not support that at the moment though.

Interrupting output (or streaming responses in general) won't work in a non-custom chat client, but I don't tend to use that anyways.

Arcuru··on Claude Team plan and iOS app
Chaz is less mature, probably buggier, more difficult to setup, configured with yaml instead of Environment Variables (why would they do that?), and written in Rust. It also uses AIChat on the backend which isn't necessarily restricted to OpenAI compatible APIs.

I also can't tell if matrix-chatgpt-bot supports sending images, but Chaz does.

Chaz supports switching the model used at any time as well, including in the middle of the chat. So you can setup many separate models and switch between them as necessary for different rooms.

Arcuru··on Claude Team plan and iOS app
You can access it via your normal Matrix client, like the Element app for iOS or Android.
Arcuru··on Claude Team plan and iOS app
All the chats are just Matrix rooms, so...yes. Just open a different Matrix room for a different chat.
Arcuru··on Claude Team plan and iOS app
At the risk of being spammy, I wrote a simple Matrix bot that replicates the entirety of their currently announced featureset, but also supports any other model too, that you can access from a normal Matrix client.

Stop re-building chat clients, I already have one!

Ideally they would just run their own chatbot on different existing chat platforms that you could verify your API key with, but with my project you can at least run that chatbot yourself.

Arcuru··on "So that a truncated partial download doesn't end up executing half a script"
...isn't that a common pattern? I'm pretty sure most install scripts I download and run already do that, though I don't run those very often.
Arcuru··on October 2025 will be a support massacre for a bunch of Microsoft products
The main blocker is the requirement for TPM 2.0. It requires a minimum chipset (motherboard) version, which is only compatible with a minimum CPU generation. I'm not sure how much is implemented on the CPU die vs the mobo chipset, but you effectively need both.

So I think you're right, saying it's a motherboard thing may be slightly more accurate :)

Arcuru··on October 2025 will be a support massacre for a bunch of Microsoft products
Has anyone figured out how many devices are still running Windows that can't upgrade to 11?

The oldest Intel CPUs supported were released in 2017.

Arcuru··on Ask HN: What rabbit hole(s) did you dive into recently?
I started by looking into LLMs outside of ChatGPT (self-hosting ollama, API services, etc.) I got annoyed that they all had their own 'chat' interface, or that all the chat interfaces were some bad rebuild of a chat application.

So I wrote https://github.com/arcuru/chaz to connect any LLM to Matrix so that I could use any Matrix client with any LLM.

That got me writing a Matrix bot account in Rust, and I couldn't find a simple bot framework so I split out a bot framework in https://github.com/arcuru/headjack

But _then_ I realized a really easy bot I could write that would also be very useful for me, and I wrote https://github.com/arcuru/pokem which is sort of a clone of ntfy.sh but using Matrix. Send yourself (or others, or a group) a ping on Matrix using an HTTP request or a simple CLI app.

Arcuru··on Downgraded my website to GitHub pages; couldn't be happier
I host a number of services on a cloud server, but my website is still just using a static site with Cloudflare pages. If you just need a static site they are so simple to setup it's not been worth it to bother hosting myself.
Arcuru··on Some Fritz!Box modems might have been hijacked

Arcuru··on The Rust calling convention we deserve
You have to implement the C version manually, so it's not that odd you'd need to do the same for Rust?

You've described, basically, a custom type that is 8 Options<u8>s. If you start caring about performance you'll need to roll your own internal Option handling.
