Apaec··on Flaws in Coronavirus Pandemic Theory[pdf]
Would love more scrutiny on the PCR test for the coronavirus. If no one challenges the test based on the large number of false positives, quarantine will go on until the vaccine arrives.
Apaec··on Do we need a web API?
But now you added the GraphQL layer on top of HTTP.
Apaec··on Blogging Like a Hacker (2008)
I've seen this a lot in OSS. Virtuous developers will at least give credit.

Others will claim it was their own work, spice up the wording and build their own personal brand.

Could we refer to these cases as "plagiarism"? It's the proper definition after all. Forking is different as it relates to code, not ideas.

Apaec··on Flakes – Proposed mechanism to package Nix expressions into composable entities
> Viva la monorepo.

Absolutely. Look at edolstra take on this though https://github.com/NixOS/rfcs/pull/49#discussion_r305450668

This is why I'm scared of this change.

Apaec··on Flakes – Proposed mechanism to package Nix expressions into composable entities
That's mentioned by edolstra in a comment on the proposal.

Apaec··on Flakes – Proposed mechanism to package Nix expressions into composable entities
This proposal makes me scared for my bet on going full with NixOS.

To me it seems like a really complicated technical solution to a social problem(the monorepo approach doesn't scale).

If more people are needed to maintain the nixpkgs repo why instead not focus on ways to increase the community size.

Missing docs have been a problem for NixOS for a long time, most awesome features are lost on some proficient users tweets. Having better docs would do wonders for the community.

I think if NixOS wants to copy some of Rust strengths, quality docs should be its first priority.

Apaec··on Anomalous CPU utilization on Windows build node caused by ads
It's still an stupid mistake MS made that could be once back. That's enough for me for staying away from the MS tax for life.
Apaec··on Runs on the Librem 5 Smartphone – Week 2
Just be happy for industrial competitiveness and stfu dude.

Honestly, I've been noticing this trend of bashing the newcomers or defending the monopolists more and more here on HN.

It doesn't really feel more like a startup/hacker news.

Just trying to promote awareness here.

Apaec··on Runs on the Librem 5 Smartphone – Week 2
Web centric didn't work for FirefoxOS.

Contrary to popular trends, programmers can know more than a couple of languages and not everything has to be javascript.

I'm sure many hackers would be more excited to make an app with go, rust, haskell, etc than to do js, that just feels like work.

Apaec··on Gmail confidential mode is not secure or private
What's the problem with Google having a competitor, why are you so hyped about?(This is why I think you're a fanatic)

Also, why are you so eagerly defending the big guy/monopolist in the room. Is this the attitude of an entrepreneur or hacker? One that is part of the "hacker news" community?

Apaec··on Gmail confidential mode is not secure or private
The hacker news guidelines explicitly mention avoiding calling names like idiotic/idiots.

@dang: does this merit a flag or ban?

I think toxic fanatism make hn a worse place for discussion.

Apaec··on Show HN: Catj – A new way to display JSON files
I much prefer jq[1]. Actively developed and written in C.

Apaec··on A belief in meritocracy is not only false: it’s bad for you
Articles always miss that Bill Gates takeoff with DOS was thanks to his mother having ties with IBM CEO John Opel.

So that example has nothing to do with meritocracy.

Apaec··on Google Decides to Monetize Maps
A discussion about Mapillary vs OSC https://github.com/openstreetcam/openstreetcam.org/issues/60

I'll go for OSC for future projects. Thanks for sharing.

Apaec··on You Are Not Google (2017)
I guess it can't be proved that this guy is a shill for AWS.

But this kind of toxic fanatism(yet trying to sound logical) is just harmful for the HN community.

dang: Can this kind of behavior be punished?

Apaec··on Defence Against the Docker Arts
NixOS offers the same benefits(more actually). Without containers.
Apaec··on Microsoft acquires Citus Data (YC S11)
Why is an acquisition a win for the company? Seems to me like the big company is killing the small one and absorbing its soul(brand).

Shouldn't sustainability be the primary goal instead of making big bucks temporarily?

Apaec··on Applying programming language research ideas to transform spreadsheets
Excel seems like the ideal frontend for CRUD apps. It already has all the controls one needs, reusing these would be better than reimplementing them again and again in custom webapps.

Has anyone integrated Excel with a db like PostgreSQL?

Apaec··on Applying programming language research ideas to transform spreadsheets
I guess this kubernetes piece[0] would be the epitome of n00b code.

Apaec··on Do We Worship Complexity?
Rust is another favorite of mine, and with Rust you also get efficiency besides correctness and reusability.

I wish Rust would have gone with an ML syntax though, in particular the Hindley-Milner type signatures allow me to reason better about code reusability, the "fn" and braces just adds noise to me, too much Haskell I guess.

Apaec··on “Stress Hormone” Cortisol Linked to Early Toll on Thinking Ability
Does anyone know the relationship between stress and hair loss?
Apaec··on PostgreSQL 11 Released
Vim should learn from psql, not even ctrl+d works there.
Apaec··on Do We Worship Complexity?
Wanted to state the main idea first. I definitely agree about one-liners, Perl and APL come to mind.

There are some other aspects to this idea of code economy: correctness and reusability. This definitely depends on the programming language.

In Java(or oop for that matter) you can get correctness but to get reusability you need a whole hierarchy of classes, lots of added code/cost.

In Python you get more reusability out of the box but to get correctness you need to add swaths of unit tests, lots of cost.

In contrast with a functional language such as Haskell you get both with less effort, fp plus a rich type system reduce code enourmosly.

Apaec··on Do We Worship Complexity?
What that kind of people need to understand is that "code is a liability, not an asset". Every piece of adhoc code is added maintenance cost, hence the less code the better, no matter the programming language or paradigm.
Apaec··on If You're Not Writing a Program, Don't Use a Programming Language [video]
Code doesn't have to look like that, look at the Haskell version:

  gcd x y | x == y = x
          | x > y = gcd (x - y) y
          | otherwise = gcd x (y - x)
Much more close to the math notation.
Apaec··on Functional core, imperative shell (2012)
I learned this through Haskell, it enforces the "functional core, imperative shell" approach through the IO monad. Now I find myself repeating the same pattern in other languages(js, java).
Apaec··on Don't learn Dvorak
Kinda the same reason why I only used an Ergodox EZ for a couple days. I realized that collaboration is hard and also wasted too much time configuring it. Restrictions do free sometimes.
Apaec··on Death by Database
The db is not only about tables, there's a reason why views exist, the users/managers should only query views, these are easy to change whenever the underlying private schema changes.
Apaec··on Low.js – Node.js for embedded devices
I like js, but I won't sacrifice all the performance aspects in the sole name of productivity.

Node(nor any GC lang) is simply not designed for embedded dev. I'll gladly switch to C or Rust that are designed for this kind of work.

Apaec··on In killing Inbox, Google takes another swipe at its most passionate users
If you want to be passionate about a piece of software, make sure it's OSS.
