Anonyneko··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
I'm lucky in that I learned to ignore it over time, so I'm not too bothered by it when I go to sleep. But when I'm particularly mentally exhausted it's much louder than even my retro fridge. Got a noise combo too, as my eyesight is also full of TV static.
Anonyneko··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
Still a thing with some of the Finnish banks, as I've recently learned. In my bank it costs ~20€ - unless you can't physically use a smartphone, in which case it's free. But you kinda have to know that it exists.
Anonyneko··on Qwen3.8-Max: A New Bar for Coding and Cowork
Full model or a 4-bit quant? I have a 5090 and I'm not sure whether I should use a quant that fits within the VRAM or a much bigger version where I'd have to offload a lot to 64GB RAM and a beefy CPU (but still a CPU)
Anonyneko··on KOReader
It's a great reader app, but as a reader of Japanese light novels it's sadly not fit for my personal purposes - last I checked vertical text is only possible in a really, _really_ hacky way (using a font that is turned sideways), and dictionary support for Japanese (or, say, Finnish with its complex lemmatization) is lacking behind browser extensions such as Yomitan, or mobile apps like Hoshi Reader that have Yomitan dictionary support.

I don't think KOReader handles fixed-size epubs terribly well too, and most of my manga (usually bought on Rakuten Kobo) comes in that format.

For reading English or native language books on non-Android e-readers it's a godsend.

Anonyneko··on OverpAId – Fire your CEO. Hire the future
In the post-Soviet world it's a fairly normal practice to have a "CEO on paper" who's only there to go to jail if things go wrong, and have a completely different person or people make all of the business decisions and handle deals and big customers. E.g. in one of my former workplaces this formal "CEO" was the bookkeeping guy who handled our salary payments and whatnot.

This practice is old enough that it was parodied in "The Golden Calf" in 1931...

Anonyneko··on US citizen charged after GrapheneOS phone wipes during airport search
Not enough, e.g. when crossing the Russian border (even as a citizen) your phone can be connected via USB to a device that uses exploits and whatnot to download all of the data. Surely US border guard can do something similar.

And using encryption will only make you more suspicious, and may be a reason to get jail time until the situation is "cleared up" one way or another (e.g. by getting even more jail time).

Only a second phone works, if you can make it seem like a device you're actually using (though also not a silver bullet as e.g. a lot of messenger metadata is available to governments and border control can physically coerce you to log in to your real accounts)

Anonyneko··on Measuring developer productivity with the DX Core 4
That's exactly what they're introducing all of that crap for, to make people quit voluntarily, layoffs are more expensive...
Anonyneko··on FreeInk: Open ecosystem for e-readers
In some jurisdictions the act of removing DRM and any other similar kinds of protection is actually illegal by itself.

Ethics-wise, hard agree.

Anonyneko··on Qwen 3.8
It's probably in Chinese, which would cut out most of us here.
Anonyneko··on OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe
"Hacker's choice" phones don't appear to sell enough to justify the costs, although they can be a decent strategy for building the initial brand awareness.

Financially speaking, OPPO was right to gut OnePlus all those years ago and streamline their production into selling the same models (with minor tweaks) under the brands that are more known in this or that region. Saves on hardware and software development costs a lot, and once OnePlus was a household brand among the general public it no longer had to appeal to the hacker crowd anyway.

Sad as it is. I bought the One when they were still invite-only and mained it for years, amazing device for the time. Went a bit full circle and using a Nord 3 right now, but I didn't get it because of the brand (just needed a basic secondary smartphone for traveling and got a good deal on it, it's clearly just a generic OPPO brick).

Anonyneko··on GLM 5.2 beats Claude in our benchmarks
>why so many people seem to want the best model available

In my case, I rarely ever go over the Claude/ChatGPT subscription limits, so might as well use those considered-best models. If I had to generate millions of lines of code, maybe I would've used the open models more.

Anonyneko··on Your ePub Is fine
Amazing! Do you know if anyone tried to run this on a Sage?

After getting that Kobo I realized that my hyper specific reading needs require a web browser with extension support (in particular support for Yomitan or similar dictionaries; the built-in dictionary functions on e-readers are awful for most non-English languages even with custom dictionaries, and KOReader isn't any better in that regard)

Anonyneko··on Squillions: How money laundering won
Considering my country of origin is using crypto for sanction busting at an enormous scale, I just take this line as absolute truth.
Anonyneko··on The Pirate Bay Remains Resilient, 20 Years After the Raid
E.g. ext.to aggregates torrents from a lot of public trackers, very often you can find good releases there.
Anonyneko··on Exit IP VPN servers mitigation rollout
I wish Mullvad would focus on censorship breaking. These days anything that doesn't implement something along the lines of AmneziaWG/Xray/Shadowsocks/Outline feels like a waste of time, sadly.
Anonyneko··on Microsoft open-sources "the earliest DOS source code discovered to date"
We still used them in the university as late as in 2010...

Anonyneko··on Hardware Attestation as Monopoly Enabler
We will be truly screwed when internet providers will only allow attested hardware to access the internet. Doesn't even seem like an outrageous outcome anymore.
Anonyneko··on The X-Files has made me nostalgic for a time I never experienced
My country had a complete economic collapse in the 90s and people could barely afford food, so mileage varies.

As an oil exporter country we were saved in the 00s by oil prices ballooning to the moon, so that was the golden decade for us instead (relatively speaking, and mostly in the big cities).

Anonyneko··on Your phone is about to stop being yours
I actually had no idea, I thought they retired these, but it seems that one of the models is still available. Thanks for the heads up!
Anonyneko··on Your phone is about to stop being yours
See, the thing is, here you can't use banking on your computer without having a bespoke authentication app on your phone. There used to be a system of one-time codes sent via paper mail, but even that has been scrapped by now, so using bank ID apps is literally the only option across all of the local banks. In my bank the ID app and the bank app are even different apps, and it's the ID app that's the truly important one to have (and that, of course, hates rooted/modified phones with a passion).

The government services also go through these ID apps, although there is a poorly supported alternative that uses USB smart card readers. I have not seen a single person actually use it, probably for a reason, though I'm planning to get one just to have a backup...

Anonyneko··on Your phone is about to stop being yours
I've resigned to the fact that I'll need to use two phones, one with locked down Android/iOS for banking applications and government services (those require strong bank ID around these parts), another with some kind of a Linux or unlocked Android for literally everything else. Oh well, such is life, most people don't care enough about this to pressure Google/Apple/banks/governments into yielding.

A big reason why a non-locked-down OS is absolutely vital to me is that sometimes I (reluctantly) have to travel to places where I need to install obscure VPN/proxy services to be able to access international internet. Most services present in app stores have been banned for years now, and the government sometimes even succeeds in making Apple/Google remove the more effective ones from the stores.

Anonyneko··on Using coding assistance tools to revive projects you never were going to finish
How well does it work with Godot? Engines like Unity and Godot are very focused on using the editor UI, so I've always wondered if there's any better workflow than generating code snippets. Unless you're going full .NET/GDExtension...
Anonyneko··on Using coding assistance tools to revive projects you never were going to finish
Russian too. There is a subset of words which are referred to as "it", but for most words "he" or "she" are used regardless of whether these are living things or not. With loanwords we just decide by similarity to other words. Claude is definitely a "he" as the word is the same as a common male name.

This trips me up occasionally when I'm translating things into English. Once, when I referred to an indefinite gender player character in a gacha game as a "he" (because the word "player" is a "he"), quite a few people got mad! Even though in my head I was never trying to imply one way or the other.

Anonyneko··on Investigation uncovers two sophisticated telecom surveillance campaigns
The Russian leaked ones have proven to be legit many times over by investigative journalists cross-referencing those with other databases (e.g. flight tracking or leaked food delivery databases).
Anonyneko··on Investigation uncovers two sophisticated telecom surveillance campaigns
Yeah, that of course is a bigger concern for the government right now. I sometimes forget that it's neither 2019 nor even 2021 anymore.
