Anon_Forever··on Tell HN: Reddit Removes Multiple Moderator Teams of Large Subreddits
>I find these types of comments interesting, have you moderated a subreddit yourself?

What if I have? What if I haven't? To answer your question, yes I have, including medium sized ones.

>The majority of subreddits on Reddit are moderated by moderators who only mod one or maybe a related subreddit.

Possibly, but all of those combined probably have less users than a single median sized subreddit. Their impact, userbase, views, etc. are miniscule.

>Quite a bit of work goes into it, especially on the more active ones.

It's a tough job hammering out all dissent, shaping the narrative, and dictatorially destroying communities!

>Is there anything specifically you don’t like about reddits current moderator system?

Almost everything? How about automatically being banned from subs for posting or following wrongthink subs? How about mods arbitrarily banning and removing anything and everything because they feel like it and there's no recourse for the community, and everything is kept in the dark. A cursory look at /r/watchredditdie provides more than enough specifics about what's to dislike.

Anon_Forever··on Ask HN: What is the morale like inside Reddit, as an employee?
>There are liberals and moderates who are annoyed by people who are aware of the plight of minorities?

No, that's a poorly constructed strawman. Even conservatives care about the plight of minorities. There are liberals and moderates who are annoyed by "woke" leftists who believe acronyms are White supremacy [0], men can get pregnant, taking your top off at a White House event is a positive thing, etc.

Anon_Forever··on Why I Live in San Francisco
>My numbers come from a far better source, with 1,475 data points

Not at all, levels.fyi is hilariously off, with many junk data points.

Let's settle this once and for all and go to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (which captures real compensation from tax returns, payroll, etc.) and see:

Tampa: $110k [0]

San Francisco: $181k [1]

>This is much more realistic to what software eng here can expect to make.

Not at all according to these facts.

>And that COL index is laughable, when it's housing is 3.5x SF to Tampa.

That COL index is sourced from COLI and is recognized by the U.S. Census Bureau and U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. [2]

>As median rents, 3.3k to 1.9k show, your actual net cost of housing is nothing like 3.5x.

Median rent means nothing when you can rent an entire 2500sqft house in Tampa for less than what it costs to rent a 1000sqft hell hole in SF. COLI factors that in which is exactly why the 3x factor stands.

>Buying a $1.5m SF home vs. $500k Tampa is as much an investment as it is just a housing cost...

Immaterial.

So back to the numbers:

$110k * 1.79 = $196k. You again come out ahead in Tampa, over $15k ahead.

QED.

Anon_Forever··on Why I Live in San Francisco
Your numbers are way off.

SF average base salary is $154k [0]. Tampa is $97k [1]. COL index is 1.79 [2].

$97k * 1.79 is $173k, and the COL does not cover California income taxes.

You're actually ahead in Tampa by almost $20k.

Anon_Forever··on Why I Live in San Francisco
Florida beaches are second to none as far as the continental US is concerned. With a lower cost of living in cities like Tampa versus San Francisco, it's somewhat of a no brainer.
Anon_Forever··on Comparison of different Lemmy Instances
This sounds like it boils down to "everyone I dislike is a Nazi." The mirror image of this would be:

> Group A: “We should punch commies, we actively encourage punching commies” > Beehaw: “Hey! You can’t advocate for violence towards people!”

> Group A: “They’re commies, they deserve it”

Something along those lines. In this case not exactly “punching commies”, but advocating something “should happen to commies and their ilk”.

I know who John Brown is, but that history is completely immaterial to the topic at hand.

Anon_Forever··on Comparison of different Lemmy Instances
Lemmy has/had the other extreme where it was full of "Gen Zedong" people.
Anon_Forever··on Comparison of different Lemmy Instances
>As a result, we find historical figures such as John Brown very admirable and hold strong opinions on what should happen to slaveholders and their ilk. Beehaw doesn't seem to like that.

What does this even mean in the context of a social media site?

Anon_Forever··on Reddit CEO Triples Down, Insults, Whines
I should have clarified I'm looking for user engagement numbers, not stock price. There are dozens of Tech stocks that have had prices slashed: https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/07/here-are-10-of-the-worst-per...

>If that isn't abject failure, what is?

Users fleeing the platform and no longer providing revenue would be abject failure. Companies pausing advertisement dollars as rates rise and tech generally having a tumultuous time in the market isn't an "abject failure".

Anon_Forever··on Reddit CEO Triples Down, Insults, Whines
>and Elon isn't actually doing a good job with Twitter anyway

Are there any user engagement numbers to back this statement up? I constantly see and hear this, but a lot of the people I followed that initially left Twitter for Mastodon after Musk took over have recently returned.

EDITED: not financial, but user engagement.

Anon_Forever··on Ask HN: Would more people take public transportation if it had business class?
Many train lines across the world do have the concept of classes. First class trains have more room and nicer amenities.
Anon_Forever··on The US government is buying troves of data about Americans
>yeah, so in other words, might makes right in the world that the US has configured.

yeah, so in other words, might makes right in the world that humans have configured.

FTFY. Violence is the supreme authority that all other authority derives from.
