AnnikaL··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
I think it is good for people to want the best for their children. It doesn't follow that one should care more about some children who aren't related to you than about other unrelated children, because of their skin color.
AnnikaL··on Religious scholars met with Anthropic
Plenty of Internet companies are still around after the dot-com bubble crashed though.
AnnikaL··on In Ukraine, distributed renewables foil Russia's assaults
The idea is that if you promise to drop nuclear weapons on any country which attacks your capital, Russian tanks will not attack your capital. Whether this is a wise strategy is unclear, but countries like Pakistan[1] and Israel[2] have employed such a policy, and none of their unfriendly neighbors have yet managed to send tanks into Islamabad or Tel Aviv.

University students are presumably not "unskilled" --- they're learning some skills at university, and probably got admitted on the basis of some skills! Maybe the jobs they are working are unskilled, but that's not what we were talking about.

Also, talking about "maintaining a homeland for white children" is eerily reminiscent of the white supremacist 'fourteen words' slogan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fourteen_Words

AnnikaL··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
No, some resources aren't shared (for example, human capital: things that I know how to do aren't shared, since nobody can 'borrow' my knowledge) or are effectively infinite (for instance, you can travel arbitrarily far into outer space and not run out of space).
AnnikaL··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
I also drive a Hyundai Kona. Here are some things I use the physical buttons for that I wouldn't want to use a screen for:

- turning the air conditioning up or down (or off) while I'm driving and feel too hot/cold

- adjusting the volume of music or the radio while driving

- turning on the radio

- turning seat heaters on or off

I don't want to fiddle with a touchscreen to do any of these things while the car is in motion.

AnnikaL··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
The article does say that the electric Corolla is to be priced at $30k, about $3,000 more than the hybrid and $5,000 more than the gas-powered one. That may not be objectively 'low cost', but it's comparable in cost to the lowest-cost new EVs, and probably similar total cost of ownership to the hybrid/gas cars when considering cheaper fuelling.
AnnikaL··on Feds Target AI Critics as "Foreign Agents"
Would this not mean that if you oppose the Iran war because it's bad to kill civilians or you want gas prices to go down, that's OK - but if you oppose the Iran war because you're trying to help the Iranian government's foreign policy goals, that's acting as a foreign agent?

(Similarly, demonstrating in support of Israel because you think the US-Israel alliance is good for the US vs. good for Israel.)

AnnikaL··on Raspberry Pi blocks changing RAM chips
The legends are true. I remember begging my parents to get me a Raspberry Pi sometime in the mid 2010s, and the cheap model was US$25 (and the less-cheap model was $35).

Admittedly, this may be closer to $40-50 in today's money (and didn't include an SD card, but those were more common back then in the era of digital cameras)...

AnnikaL··on Houthis 'take control' of key island in global shipping route
More than one thing can be bad at once. Opposing unprovoked wars and illegal West Bank settlements doesn't make theocratic law any less bad.
AnnikaL··on Diesel prices in U.S. top $6 a gallon for first time
This year I bought a 5 year old compact electric SUV with 94% reported battery health (gets about 20 miles under its EPA-estimated range) for under $12k.
AnnikaL··on Diesel prices in U.S. top $6 a gallon for first time
Huh, how does having options of ICE or EV cars mean high oil prices won't mean people try to use less oil?

If gas prices go up, expensive public EV chargers will be more appealing. I hope you get better infrastructure re: charging soon; here in California (not known for low energy prices nor for infrastructure-building capacity) most fast chargers are between US$0.50 and US$0.70 (£0.37-£0.52) per kWh, so it is definitely possible. (You also need non-fossil-based electricity generation to truly decouple from oil/gas prices.)

I share your worries about industry, though — although trucks, earth-movers, etc could theoretically run on batteries or hydrogen or something, industrial processes using petroleum and natural gas may be around for a lot longer.

AnnikaL··on Any Human Ever – One life, drawn at random from all who have ever lived
I died of malaria at age 1 in the West African Sahel!
AnnikaL··on Credit Card Rewards Became a $9.2B Wealth Transfer
I'm American, and I don't use the extra cash flow (in fact, I make sure to keep more money in my checking account than I spend on the credit card, so I can always auto-pay my bill and therefore never pay any interest).

If I could get a debit card that gave me 2% cash back on all transactions, I'd use that instead!

AnnikaL··on DeepSeek pause fundraise after comments on compute gap to US leaked (transcript) [pdf]
Yeah, wouldn't it makes sense to increase fundraising, so as to acquire more compute to close the gap?
AnnikaL··on The Visual 6502
I got 22-33Hz on an AMD Ryzen 7640U on power-save mode and 50-55Hz on performance mode.
AnnikaL··on New US homeownership measure puts people first
I wonder if some of this will reverse once more electric cars are available on the used market, which are cheaper to fuel and require less maintenance. Already some of the explosion of non-luxury EVs with >200 miles range around 2020ish are starting to be available used, albeit a bit more expensive than gas counterparts.

If battery degradation isn't too great, maybe in 10 years people can buy 15 year old EVs that are cheap to maintain and run (for those who can accept the tradeoffs of EVs - and that would reduce demand on ICEVs). We'll see.

AnnikaL··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded
I think it doesn't have to be insecurity. I drive a Hyundai Kona, and have no particular desire for speed or performance; I'm happy for other people to have sporty, fast cars even if they are modded, but I do get annoyed by very loud vehicles (regardless of performance; e.g. small motorcycles or pickups that are very loud are also annoying).

I'm not blaming OP specifically for this, but I don't think you have to drive a sports car to be allowed to be annoyed by loud cars without it being 'insecurity'.

AnnikaL··on What even is food authenticity? Why we guard carbonara, and flatten chicken rice
Adding onions, non-cheese dairy, bacon, chives and/or udon noodles to carbonara sounds delicious. If I am cooking for myself, I care more about that than fidelity to traditional Italian recipes.
AnnikaL··on EV Stupidity Checklist
Happy to say that the electric car I drive checks every box!
AnnikaL··on The four-day workweek in Australia: insights from early adopters of 100:80:100
Well, yes, but the courses I've taken for the computer science portion of my degree feel much more like math or engineering than science; experimental/empirical verification of natural facts are hardly present.
AnnikaL··on Princeton mandates proctoring for in-person exams, upending 133 year precedent
I'm in Mudd's class of '27 (and I was on the honor board for 2 years), and I do think the honor code system has gotten somewhat less functional over the time I've been here. But I think a majority of students and faculty still want to make it work.
AnnikaL··on Princeton mandates proctoring for in-person exams, upending 133 year precedent
Wait, why can't the students be punished?
AnnikaL··on Period tracking app, Flo, found to be selling user data to Meta
50% of the human population will at some point in their life have periods, perhaps; but presumably (due to childhood and menopause) less than 50% of the human population has recently experienced a period.
AnnikaL··on Am I German or Autistic?
Is Kantian morality popular in Germany? I admittedly know few Germans but they do not seem to be especially deontological in morality.

I kind of want to try some project like this sometime, but I wouldn't even know where to start...

AnnikaL··on Spain’s LaLiga has blocked access to freedom.gov
Should the Spanish government decide what is "misinformation"? Should it be forbidden to read false or misleading statements on the Internet?
AnnikaL··on Irish man with valid US work permit held in ICE detention for five months
Green cards are for permanent residency, so it makes sense to me that someone would live in the US for 30 years with one. That seems very different than spending over a decade in the US without any permanent status, just temporary visas.
AnnikaL··on Memories of .us
The notion that community colleges can't use .edu no longer seems true. When I took community college classes, I got an @my.smccd.edu email address.
AnnikaL··on Where do the children play?
