AnneTheAgile··on Antidepressants taken during pregnancy increase risk of autism
Nobody has mentioned in addition to drugs, talk therapy, food can be a lifesaver wrt depression. Specifically, I and a medical doctor had the same experience that taking fish oil, ie high quality omega 3 DHA/EPA was a lifesaver. Also getting off sugar+ is a huge change to the brain's chemical load.
AnneTheAgile··on How Silicon Valley CEOs conspired to drive down tech engineer wages
Since CA is one of the few states that bars non-competes, I doubt this lawsuit could have been brought forth in any other state. Lawyers out there, am I right? In NYC for example, the non-competes are draconian, and there is far less movement between companies. In SiV, fortunately, movement is the norm.
AnneTheAgile··on Bloomberg begins quest to challenge the West Coast for supremacy in tech
I agree! I also favor government giving its largesse back to the actual owners, in any format. Here, "The city is offering real estate on Governors Island, Roosevelt Island or at the Brooklyn Navy Yard at virtually no cost..." I hope it works! Those areas are a little off the beaten path. Roosevelt Island is very interesting because it is very close to NYC.
AnneTheAgile··on Google.com detecting malware and notifying search users
Is that an argument for doing googling over https? Or maybe trying to get first usage of the new secured DNS (I apologize I am off-news and don't know how that will be working...)?
AnneTheAgile··on Code reviews at Google
The open source implementation, Rietveld [ http://code.google.com/p/rietveld ], sounds very interesting. Perhaps it could be used in programming classes and might also fit in with pair programming training.
AnneTheAgile··on Ask HN: Why do people not like news personalization?
I liken this problem to browsing a library or bookstore vs searching its card catalog or asking for specific information. If I have a problem, I know what I want and it may not be something I've wanted before. If I want to relax and browse, I often want something different than I've wanted before.

So I think it is a hard problem, as said here, serendipity is hard to program. However, I am absolutely sure we have not yet figured out the best way to browse. Search seems pretty good, but internet browsing can easily be too time consuming and aimless.

AnneTheAgile··on If your database has Mass. residents, you need a security plan per Massachusetts
For reference, the law's URL, which was cited in slantyyz's reference, was out of date. Here is the current link; http://www.mass.gov/Eoca/docs/idtheft/201CMR1700reg.pdf
AnneTheAgile··on If your database has Mass. residents, you need a security plan per Massachusetts
I do like the idea of encrypting user names across the wire, but "to maintain a Written Information Security Plan (WISP) and file it with the state of Massachusetts" goes way too far, imho. I am not a lawyer nor a database geek, so perhaps your take will differ...

UPDATE: "Massachusetts does not require that written information security programs be filed at this time, just that they exist," according to a second article, http://www.informationweek.com/news/security/government/show... . That is alot better.

AnneTheAgile··on Obama administration wanted warrantless access rights to most US email
At the risk of being further downvoted :). The proper definition of "rationing" is ; Government allocation of scarce resources and consumer goods, usually adopted during wars, famines, or other national emergencies. http://www.answers.com/topic/rationing

The conflation of private and governmental actions is exactly one of the things that has gotten us into the current troubles. If I choose to buy cake and not pencils today, I am not rationing myself. If the government says I can only have so many pencils or cake, I am subject to rationing.

Government is the only authorized agent of force. Private citizens are not allowed to force others to do their bidding. That is against the law: you cannot take my cake from me by force. Unfortunately, with our government becoming more and more unlimited, the force it can exert is correspondingly larger.

AnneTheAgile··on Obama administration wanted warrantless access rights to most US email
Here is a link I found. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,540965,00.html

It is well established that socialized medicine entails rationing.

AnneTheAgile··on How To Defend Your Reputation
Scott Adam's syllogistic analysis is only true if his items form an exhaustive set of possibilities. One thing time does tell us about human nature is that it is easy to overlook causes for other's behavior.

In this case, as an advocate of Objectivism, I would like to point out two things. First, the definition of "crook" seems to vary widely: some people would like to call former Pres. Clinton a crook because he had an affair. In my book, an affair may be immoral, but it should not be illegal. Second, if the 'game' in politics, as it seems to be today, is not protection of rights but allocation of loot, who do you attract? People who like to dictate allocations, not people who like to create more pie.

AnneTheAgile··on Algorithm for nice graph labels
For easy reference, this article points to the book, Graphics Gems (Hardcover) by Andrew S. Glassner (Editor) 1990. There are no Amazon reviews for it at http://www.amazon.com/Graphics-Gems-Andrew-S-Glassner/dp/012... .
AnneTheAgile··on DC Code-a-thon for government citability needs coders AND librarians
Also, get this, there is a nonprofit: The League of Technical Voters ... dedicated to motivating and assisting technical experts to improve lawmaking and governmental process. http://www.leagueoftechvoters.org/
AnneTheAgile··on Posterous (blog with email submission) now has time delay.
With scheduling of posts for particular times, it's easier to seem like a pro, so I like this feature. Implementing it as keywords in the subject is a bit unwieldy I suspect due to subject line length limits, but at least they offer it. In the comments I also read about the site lettermelater.com, which offers delay of email. (PG has a blog on posterous.)
AnneTheAgile··on Ask HN: Good, lightweight bug tracking system for small team?
Based on posts here I found the "Task-focused API" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Task-Focused_Interface . There are lots of extensions available based on it: http://wiki.eclipse.org/index.php/Mylyn_Extensions . For example, from gmail, you can add a task by tagging a message! This Extensions page also seems to be a good reference list of todo aka project management trackers.
AnneTheAgile··on How I got my leg tied to the radiator because of Facebook
What do you think about the Twitter Sign-in API? I like that Twitter involves delimited, public information, so linking it to other accounts may be less problematic.
AnneTheAgile··on How I got my leg tied to the radiator because of Facebook
I like that GUI, but it is unclear what your username is for if the password is not given to you. I think you mean that the password is given by the login provider, but then does that mean the user has two loginid's with you? [One for you and one for the provider] I am not the user who thinks you should google for your facebook account, but unfortunately I guess I am a bit confused! I wish I weren't because I really like the OpenID idea and haven't had troubles with the GUI myself... except it does take more screens it seems.
AnneTheAgile··on Ask HN: Writing for Americans
I tried to google and find your post but could not see it. I would think the word scrumbut is a typo [or perhaps crass], but without seeing the byline or the article I would not know for sure.

Please don't curse in your writing but any local color is very nice! Personally, just as I enjoy hearing foreign accents in real life, I enjoy seeing them on the web. It helps remind me that the web is a many splendored and located place :).

AnneTheAgile··on Tell HN: Giving away programming books to HN members
FYI, nowadays if you have more than one [I think 2 is the number] of priority mail items, you can request a USPS pickup!
AnneTheAgile··on Readability
Thirded :).
AnneTheAgile··on Should your source code be in one folder or should it be nested?
I love the breckyunits posts and this topic is of interest.

It seems to omit the obvious problem with flat structures: modern IDE's require certain folderings.

But if you use VIM and work alone then I guess that's not an issue.

AnneTheAgile··on Crime in America keeps going down, yet the American public refuses to believe it
A reason I am not optimistic about crime in the USA is the continuing escalation of so-called smaller issues. With crime, "a stitch in time saves nine." Catching a small incident and having the person change behavior leads to enormous changes over time.

For an example that many consider trivial, cursing is at an all time high. Cursing's purpose in life is to convey and share anger: it is not conducive to high quality, cheerful life. There is research in psychology that shows that expressing anger leads to more, not less, of it. I actually consider quitting HackerNews entirely due to the poor quality of auto-removal of cursing in titles, text, and remarks. I am very repulsed by the ruby community for the same reason. For exaple, ruby sub, an email client has an homepage that features cursing. I just feel ick and don't even want to try it any more.

A second glaring example, imho, is vandalism. Nowadays, when I accosted a vandal in NYC, he gave me the NY Times' justifications for his crime. He said "it's art!" and "I'm black and I'm angry!" He has absorbed all the anti-capitalist myths; I am sure he never read Atlas Shrugged! The amount of property destruction is enormous. That is crime and that is way way up.

In some ways, the world is getting alot better: Ayn Rand's philosophy is being developed and publicized. Those who uphold her ideas of independence, rationality, etc, are very civilized. Thus it's a race between her ideas and those of Kant.

AnneTheAgile··on Erik Naggum on Atlas Shrugged
> It makes the claim implicitly that catastrophes only happen to people that deserve them

Ah, no. It is a novel. You seem to be confusing fiction with fact.

AnneTheAgile··on FleetDB
Is it not true that a major purpose of a DB is to handle datasets the are too big for RAM? If the items fit in RAM, isn't speed ~1/1000th (ie ratio of RAM access to HD access time) the issue it was?
AnneTheAgile··on Is Google killing discovery to enhance search?
Thank you Dalke, I'll take a look at that.
