Angostura··on Vint Cerf, “father of the Internet”, is retiring
I interviewed him a few times, when I was a tech journalist in the 90s - a very impressive man.

However I never forget my surprise, Idly flicking through TV one evening and coming across Earth Final Conflict - and there was Vint in a fairly substantial role

Angostura··on Please stop the AI confidence theater
> i dont think there is any software on the planet that i would consider "truly life changing",

I think the combination of web server and web browser comes close.

Angostura··on Half-Baked Product
Reading this made me hyperventilate
Angostura··on CERN bids farewell to the LHC and enters Long Shutdown 3
Not a physicist, but isn’t the issue here that these are experiments? Failure to find a potential particle at a predicted energy shouldn’t be seen as ‘nothing to show’ or a failure. I presume it tells us something really valuable- if perhaps disappointing
Angostura··on Asahi Linux 7.1 Progress Report
Let’s not conflate total App Store revenue and Ad revenue.
Angostura··on We moved our Bluesky data to Eurosky
You have to be pretty spicy if you are getting banned from Reddit, as opposed to being modded. In the later case, you can set up your own subreddit, surely?
Angostura··on Professor denounces mass AI fraud on an exam at Brown
In the UK the majority of exams are in person and on paper. Doesn’t seem to be a particular problem
Angostura··on The MUMPS 76 Primer – anniversary edition
You obviously never read doctors notes in the 70s. Black humour was de rigeur
Angostura··on Marfa Public Radio Puts You to Sleep
Marvin Minksky's AI lecture series FTW
Angostura··on Marfa Public Radio Puts You to Sleep
In Our Time. Is always fascinating and always puts be to sleep - I have to consume it in 10 minute nightly chunks
Angostura··on If your product is Great, it doesn't need to be Good (2010)
You include it but with no mention of it. Allow recoding to be activated with an obscure undocumented button push.

Leave a subtle hong somewhere that someone clever can find out. Wait for news of the functionality to go viral and additional products to walk off the shelf bought by people who feel clever.

Angostura··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
My LG one has had smomething like that - a coupkle of years old. Seems quite nifty though - it tumbles the load dry for a while and alledgely uses the patterm of weight shift to determine what kind of load it is - the materials etc - and adjusts the wash accordingly
Angostura··on Sixty percent of US consumers say 'AI' in brand messaging is a turnoff
I think AI has also become synonymous with slapdash, low effort, probably steals my data
Angostura··on The history of butterfly swimming
You’re familiar with the walking competition?
Angostura··on Apple's weird anti-nausea dots cured my car sickness
Has worked very well for my wife who notably couldn’t look at her phone for even a few seconds without feeling ill
Angostura··on Leaving Mozilla
I hate this. It basically takes as axiomatic that anyone in an administrative position in an organisation has zero interest in the goals of the organisation -and that those at the coal-face have no interest in the organisation and that there is little or no overlap in interest. Its reductionist, divisive and stupid.
Angostura··on David Hockney, Who Restored the Human Form to Art, Dies at 88
Or perhaps they know it has been owned by News Corp since 1981 - Murdoch owned
Angostura··on David Hockney, Who Restored the Human Form to Art, Dies at 88
Lovely story, thank you for sharing
Angostura··on Claude Fable is relentlessly proactive
It sounds like you learned lots of things related to the tool, but not so much about the problem that you were using the tool to solve?

Is that fair? Not trying to snark? I see similar results myself

Angostura··on The Future of Email
So... not e-mail then
Angostura··on A €0.01 bank transfer could compromise a banking AI agent
Yes. I was being humorous. Apologies
Angostura··on A €0.01 bank transfer could compromise a banking AI agent
Jokes on them. My bank will just truncate it to 10 characters.
Angostura··on The Quiet Numbers Station: Decoding Nineteen Years of GPS Cryptography
So, a number station sending a message 'detonate the bomb' isn't a number station, because most people don't have the bomb?
Angostura··on India's surprise baby bust
If not money, what are the types of issue you face?
Angostura··on Gov.uk has replaced Stripe with Dutch provider Adyen
I can’t remember the last time I paid using anything else in the UK. Occasionally a credit card if I need additional protection
Angostura··on Did Claude increase bugs in rsync?
This tool is claimed to be able to find and fix bugs.
Angostura··on Communication on European Tech Sovereignty, and an EU Open-Source Strategy
I mean, yes - if your biggest external source of energy declares war, and your hitherto trusted defence partner goes rogue - it's going to have a chilling effect and the measures needed to address that will hit both the economy and the populous
Angostura··on London's Free Roof Terraces
The odd thing is you certainly used to have book
Angostura··on Microsoft Office 2019 and 2021 for Mac view-only conversion
Meanwhile 2016 is still working fine…. Until Rosetta support is dropped.
Angostura··on Greg Brockman interview [video]
Perhaps the commenter would just like to lead a contented life without having to bother with all of that
