Anderkent··on A Plea for More Mikado
>That deprecated usage should be replaced before it is removed; and if we're talking about skipping multiple major versions over a long period, the replacement likely didn't exist in the older version, so this method still wouldn't work.

the answer to that problem in this approach is to do multiple step upgrades, rather than skipping

serious frameworks/languages do not remove methods in the same version that introduces a replacement, that's the point of having a deprecation mechanism in the first place

Anderkent··on Whenever I buy things I try to prioritize cost per use
The Boots theory is funny because it's absurd. It's not actually applicable to life in powerty. There is no class of items where if you are poor you spend more on it than when you're wealthy. People in poverty spend more _time_ on things, yeah, but not more money or money per use.

You can see some discussion on that from people who actually grew up poor in https://mastodon.social/@danluu/111068036776213383

Anderkent··on So what’s next (personal news from developer of popular CoreJS polyfill)
yes
Anderkent··on U.S. credit card debt jumps 18.5% and hits a record $930.6B
but since they charge the same prices to holders of credit (2% fee) and debit (0.05% fee), users of credit cards are de facto subsidized by cash/debit payers in the US

so as an individual it still may pay you to have one

Anderkent··on A non-constructive proof of the Four Colour Theorem
>It's so inappropriate that in the field that's actually trained for this, they're disallowed by compact, even with extensive evidence.

The field trained for this is not refraining from this because it's hard to get right, but because it undermines the privacy promise they give their clients! not an argument applicable to people who do not have that professional reputation to uphold.

Of course you should speculate about mental health of people when it's relevant to the topic - it's a factor heavily shaping many people's behaviour!

Anderkent··on Ask HN: I have diagnosed ADHD and cannot work with Slack anymore – advice?
set profile description telling people to call or text you if urgent
Anderkent··on Epic is turning off online services and servers for some older games
but also amazing things built by community

I remember the first time someone built a dedicated server for WC3 custom games (dota) that supported players reconnecting after a dc. it was mindblowing

Anderkent··on Accidental Google Pixel Lock Screen Bypass
roll to disbelieve. i think someone was pulling your leg

especially the bit with samsung devices, i've had the misfortune of setting up a samsung phone for a family member and the amount of crap on those is just unbelievable

Anderkent··on The Preppers Were Right All Along
how do you figure it's of little use? big difference between breaking in to loot a house you know is unarmed, versus one known to be armed and possibly keeping watch
Anderkent··on Most people don’t finish online job applications
obviously no one has issues with this scenario where both employers know. but the recent overemployed scheme where you get multiple jobs, do nothing for months while taking advantage of remote & people understanding that it takes time to get started, then look for a new job once you get fired from one - that's clearly abusive & wrong
Anderkent··on Gas Leak in the Baltic Sea
hasn't stopped 'green' parties from shutting down nuclear power, so it's all a question of PR
Anderkent··on The optimal amount of fraud is non-zero
re: 1; since payments processors compete for business, ones that can convincingly claim to reduce fraud rate can charge higher fees of the merchants
Anderkent··on Ask HN: Why is company letterhead a valid form of auth in 2022?
It takes pretending to be someone you're not from 'a prank' to 'fraud', and as such is actually valuable
Anderkent··on BMW’s Heated Seats as a Service Model Has Drivers Seeking Hacks
You spent some amount of money on the car, money that you would otherwise have available to either spend or invest, when you eventually replace your car you will get less if anything. So even if the car just sits in your garage you are paying for it (or really already have)

this might be less than you would be paying for renting a car (or more! depending on how often you'd need to rent), but it's obviously not 0

Anderkent··on What’s going on with Google and Facebook hiring freezes?
if it's the best offer you can get, would you quit just because someone else on another continent is being paid more?
Anderkent··on BMW’s Heated Seats as a Service Model Has Drivers Seeking Hacks
>Costs $0 to just sit in my garage

this is not true of your bought car, you're ignoring opportunity cost for the capital & depreciation

Anderkent··on BMW’s Heated Seats as a Service Model Has Drivers Seeking Hacks
the proposed counterfactual is that BMW pays someone to brick the heating before the first sale
Anderkent··on BMW’s Heated Seats as a Service Model Has Drivers Seeking Hacks
> Car extras are already very much a thing and always have been – the alternative is that BMW physically has to remove the heater components or disable them permanently, so as a second hand buyer, I'd be permanently locked out of the upgrade. Forcing the car maker to have to physically neuter the hardware out of "purity" strikes be as something a bit silly.

this is buying into a market differentiation approach that I see no reason to tolerate

it's one thing to differentiate by installing something extra (at cost) to charge a price higher than the cost to some market segment. sure, do that as much as you want, makes sense

Anderkent··on Amazon instructs New York workers “don't sign” union cards
> Well, who the hell is in the teachers union if not teachers?

well, union higher-ups are basically politicians, they're not usually working in the job by that point

Anderkent··on Amazon issued 13,000 disciplinary notices at single U.S. warehouse
pretty sure we've all been in school, and while it's not a great experience, you can work with it

i'm pretty sure amazon's optimizing the work more so that my shitty thing gets delivered at all, rather than 0.002 seconds faster. which is very valueable to me, as it happens

Anderkent··on The Uber leak exposes the global war on workers
> It’s between an underpaid job, and a well paid job with less profits for shareholders and owners

what reason you have to believe that is in fact the option? there are really quite few businesses with profit margins so high you could meaningfully raise pay purely by reducing profits.

> If your particular business can’t exist and pay people well, it needs to die to make room for one that can.

and how does that unspecified higher-margin business (if one even exists) achieve it? presumably the main way would be to be much smaller, charge higher fees & target more exclusive customers, so that only the rich get the benefits of the business, and vastly fewer people even get the opportunity for a job. sounds great.

trade-offs exist and your inability to acknowledge them is not constructive

Anderkent··on Amazon issued 13,000 disciplinary notices at single U.S. warehouse
yeah, mid management being incompetent and not noticing that the metrics are fucked up for a location i can totally believe. hopefully after some time with outlier retention issues the facility would get some attention from someone competent? ;/
Anderkent··on Amazon issued 13,000 disciplinary notices at single U.S. warehouse
I empathize with people working the tough jobs! That doesn't necessarily mean I think the jobs must be made less tough, even if I'd prefer they had better options to choose from.

A claim that the produced warnings are selectively used to fire black or unionizing workers would be much more interesting, but I don't see enough evidence to make it yet. It also doesn't really connect to the big headline of 13000 notices at one facility - if that was the purpose of the system, you'd hardly need so many.

Anderkent··on The Uber leak exposes the global war on workers
>The choice between homelessness, starvation, and working an underpaid job is not a choice made voluntarily.

and removing the underpaid job from the equation leaves someone with just homelessness or starvation - clearly a better position, right?

feel free to tip $20 for your uber rides if you feel that helps

Anderkent··on The Uber leak exposes the global war on workers
Obviously taxi drivers will not be happy talking about uber, they were beneficiaries of an insane and unjust guild system that Uber finally broke down.

Unless you can show me someone forced to drive for uber, any claims of worker exploitation are incredibly suspect.

Anderkent··on Amazon issued 13,000 disciplinary notices at single U.S. warehouse
Given that, are the warnings a serious issue? If management keeps getting those and knows the workers are not at fault in this particular warehouse, the only reason to act on the warnings is political. which yes, might well be an issue, but just the number of warnings issued is meaningless without knowing how they're acted upon.
Anderkent··on Why don't more people use throat mics?
And choice of headphone! Open versus closed headphones lie much different on your head; clamp strength and weight vary hugely as well. I'm on my third set of AKG k702s as the only headphones I can wear for hours; finding the right pair for anyone takes time.
Anderkent··on Forebruary is a wall calendar that you do not need to replace every year (2013)
Except the wall calendar has the current month on it in big letters, so all you need to know is what month it is. This thing does not tell you if it's showing you the days for Jun or Jul

also the entire point of a wall calendar is that you can make notes on specific days, isn't it?

Anderkent··on A brief history of one line fixes (2014)
Every 'how is this possible' was sarcastic
Anderkent··on A brief history of one line fixes (2014)
Yeah, the sarcasm is completely counterproductive (as it usually is). The same sentiments expressed sincerely would be a much better read
