I'd be far more curious about the correlation between consumption of various social media platforms and Far-Right voting...
The lack of filters combined with allowing slop means for example, it's impossible to find a paint by numbers app because when you search in the app store, it's 100+ clones that all charge $5 weekly OR have the most obnoxious adverts imaginable making it unplayable for people who aren't very technical. I'd have paid a straight $10 or $15 depending on the app, but if there is one with a single payment it's impossible to find.
Combined, the app store is unusable unless you already know exactly what app you want to install.
Now? Now the search bar is at the top. If you've scrolled down through categories while looking for something, then decided to just use search, or to just look in movies or shows, you now gotta scroll up & up & up.
Is that really enough to get a representative sample across 340 million people? Also, with tech as it is, why is that the best they can do?
Thanks for the rec for "rust for rustaceans" I'll have a look into it.
I've only been using chatgpt for points where i'd normally go ask another dev for another set of eyes to debug something, otherwise all my learning and doing has been mostly the rust book, crates, and blogs about rust, ecs, roguelikes etc etc. It's been so fun!
I like the idea of the throne public bathrooms. Not requiring payment, but identification instead. I wonder if you just enter your phone number, or if they text you a code you have to enter to verify that it's your phone number?
This also feels like the sort of problem the Chinese social credit system is meant to solve. With cameras everywhere & facial/gait recognition, they can identify people anywhere in public, and punish bad behaviour below the level of crime.
I also remember the UK years had a psychologist change the wording/structure of some tax forms to increase % of on time payments, and it worked so well they set up a department to do it in other areas of govt. I wonder what happened with that...
Anyway, it's an interesting problem space.
I don't even mean to be political, but one of the two parties here is notorious for lying, so much so that there's a wikipedia page dedicated to the falsehoods they have come out with: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_or_misleading_statements...
First line:
> During and between his terms as President of the United States, Donald Trump has made tens of thousands of false or misleading claims
To have a productive discussion on HN, I'd like to ask a question I've always wondered about the USA: How come, given how the media represents things, there haven't been any new media companies, no new news shows, no new newspapers/websites, dedicated to honest, factual reporting, that have gone mainstream/nationwide?
Is there something preventing this?
I wonder if this will become a competitive advantage? States that publish nothing will get less FDI or local investment because the risks are harder to calculate?
Actually, will this affect different types of insurance?
It's such an insane problem for a developed nation to have, has anyone given serious thought to the long-term affects of this?
Do I think the software ecosystem is superior? I _hate_ using the app store with a passion. I _hate_ trying to find an app for my needs(most recently a gym app) and there's 40 options and they're all a monthly subscription. I _hate_ the advertising that my children get trapped in while playing a game(I sometimes have to switch to data so that my pihole isn't used so that the ads can load so that the game will work at all), but the ads don't have a timer or an X in the top right, you have to interact with them the right way to escape.
But most of all, I _HATE_ that all my daughter wants is a draw-by-numbers game and there's literally hundreds of almost identical games which all charge $10+ a MONTH for the privilege.
Nah, I don't think the software ecosystem is superior. Although Google trying to stop sideloading does make me think they're happy racing to the goddamn bottom.
I like his suggestion of VPN via cloud. I might set up something with wireguard or tailscale for that.
I don't really use youtube, but my family does, so If anyone knows a way to get a better ui experience as a google tv app I'd be keen to hear it?
I read HN & Reddit, but the only "social" media I still use regularly are group chats with <10 people in them.
Because you think you can create the product/service before you go bankrupt, and that you can then sell it for a price the market can bear that will allow you to make a profit?
It's not just a coin flip, which is the impression you get looking at statistics too much.
- UK, Canada, Guyana, probably more countries shared intelligence on suspected drug vessels in Caribbean
- US Coast Guard accosted said vessels, searched them, arrested everyone if anything illegal was found.
Now it's:
- UK, Canada, Guyana, have all said they're not going to share intelligence, decreasing(by whatever percentage) the chances of finding a drug smuggling boat, and increasing the chance of it making its way to the USA.
- US Navy blows up what boats it does find without checking them for drugs, increasing(by whatever percentage) the chance of killing innocents, and degrading intl law & norms.
What does the US benefit from this new policy?

and are now recommending not to buy online because the doses are completely unregulated. They even reached out to companies like iHerb and asked them not to sell to Australians.
So, whatever dose you think you're taking, assume it's a bit of a guesstimate...
So far I have uninstalled all themes & plugins except the kanban board - I'm working on it. I'll use core obsidian and that's all.
Also, it's going to affect all our lives somehow, even if we're not watching from the inside.
> Develop and deploy global MISSILE DEFENSES to defend the American homeland and American allies, and to provide a secure basis for U.S. power projection around the world.
> Control the new “international commons” of space and “cyberspace,” and pave the way for the creation of a new military service - U.S. Space Forces - with the mission of space control.
They really just kept at it, huh. Although this part is interesting:
> The Joint Strike Fighter, with limited capabilities and significant technical risk, is a roadblock to future transformation and a sink-hole for needed defense funds.
Wonder why it wasn't cancelled then? Change of mind, or just too many greased palms?
I wonder about this part. Will they have time to do this if they have to release an updated vaccine annually, like the Flu?
Edit: Sorry, apparently this is supported. I'll give it a go!
Or even just altered their algorithmic feeds to show much more positive messages, suggest hobbies & push them towards more positive social circles, or something for these teens?
But no, we can target them with ads instead.
This just sounds really ominious to me. It's like they're training empathy out of their management team by letting them practice on an AI that begs for it's life just like a real human.....
I think it’s being reversed because it cratered global oil prices and that would be a terrible horrible very bad thing _for Russia_.
- Ever since I've updated to the latest iOS 18, my watch complications(weather doodad) stop working randomly because they just lose the location services permission. Then in settings, the location services permission list acts like the weather app isn't installed.
- The new Mail app now automatically classifies your email, but still gives you the "All Mail" option. But the unread count badge on the app only works off of what they classify as your "Priority" mail. There's a setting to change that, so that it shows you the unread count of ALL mail, not just priority mail, but when you change that setting nothing changes. This is my biggest problem with new iOS.
- Keyboard sometimes doesn't get out the way any more when it should.
These are just off the top of my head. It used to be such a nice, polished experience. Their competition was just outclassed. Now, when my phone dies I'm going to have a good look at all the other options.
> By charging Chinese-owned or -built vessels each time they dock at a U.S. port, the administration hopes to discourage ocean carriers from buying more ships from China
> U.S. exporters also would be required to meet targets for shipping their goods on U.S.-flagged vessels, rising from almost nothing to 15 percent of the total in seven years.
In addition to all the tariffs?
I feel like the USA is going to instead be isolated from global trade as countries work overtime to remove trade barriers between each other and source their stuff from Not-America. Isn't this kind of what happened in the run up to the great depression?
> The EPA also will take aim at rules restricting industrial pollution of mercury and other air toxins, as well as separate rules on soot pollution
While this sucks for Climate Change, it also sucks for peoples health.
It's really moving costs from companies complying with regulations on pollution to people dealing with the health effects of pollution, and with the American health care funding model, it's basically another move to tax poor people and let wealthy people off.
I guess the concept has gone from "We don't support this at all" to "We support it but won't be evil, you have to trust us."
How much do we trust Mozilla/Firefox? You could always go read the code yourself: https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central or just do what most people do and hope someone else audits it :)
