AnEro··on Elon Musk’s private jet emitted 1,895 tons of CO2 in 2022 – ElonJet Wrapped 2022
It was very clear from the start, especially seeing his past with how aggressively he litigated even minor criticisms of the tesla as if it was slander.

* edit: I forget down voting is a thing. Why I thought i was clear from the start: If someone actually cared about their private jet privacy they would be renting jets... Cause its common knowledge that one can be tracked publicly with ownership information. Or he could push for a change in gov policies, he certainly doesn't mind sharing his political opinion now.

AnEro··on Where does ChatGPT fall on the political compass?
Speech that doesn't insight hate to any %, avoiding use of any abrasive language hyper focusing down to the identity and being uncultured is offensive.

I didn't think it be so crazy to assume the people caring the most about not sounding offensive produces the least amount of offensive material to harvest for free

AnEro··on Where does ChatGPT fall on the political compass?
I feel like it makes sense the people that hyper focus on the safest speech had enough text online to pass through standards to not make the AI accidentally hateful
AnEro··on PostgREST – Serve a RESTful API from any Postgres database
I'd say you could either just use vue + django and have use AJAX to fetch data from your Rest API of a database. Theres ways to handle auth aswell but its annoying. Or just not use vue with this project, personally I think we've overestimated how much interactivity/real time updates are needed in an MVP. I personally prefer to rewrite stuff entirely, cause there is always newer shinier solutions, but I also try to keep my projects small or scrappy because of this*

*when it comes to side projects and fun projects that I am the primary user

AnEro··on Ask HN: Good Metabooks?
This is a textbook as a book, personally I'd do a reading/study group to get the most out of it. I don't have a math specialty but even with some of mid-level uni math courses around signals, random processes, and machine learning I still feel uhhh behind for this book
AnEro··on Bra size calculator
Theres a bunch, but ultimately its a marketing and knowledge issue. There are okay calculators but its alot more like glasses, where you need to wear one to know how you feel
AnEro··on PostgREST – Serve a RESTful API from any Postgres database
Big fan of Supabase and bigger fan of PostgRest, I have so many weird side projects I wouldn't have done if it wasn't quick and easy to set up this stuff.
AnEro··on Bra size calculator
This is probably one of the more surprising front page HN posts I've seen on here. Didn't think I'd see anything woman focused especially if it wasn't looking for capital!
AnEro··on Tesla stock marks lowest close in years as investors worry about Musk’s focus
I have as well and agree he is still acting the same however I don't think that automatically means he is in a good position. I think we are just now watching his marketing machine collapse, and now we are seeing the markets' evaluation of his companies if he isn't seen as a genius.
AnEro··on DBT Cloud increase Team plan price by 100% and limit features at the same time
Oh I just meant you actually start getting value at a team size of 3, not that once 3 people touch a repo it's unmanageable lol
AnEro··on DBT Cloud increase Team plan price by 100% and limit features at the same time
Only reason I'm kinda okay with this is because of the open source side is still strong. It's 90% of the features needed for a product, but the cloud offering is the same 90% but better for teams bigger than 3 and larger organizations.

I genuinely think that this pricing increase is justifiable, and also will spark more competition to DBT Cloud's features in the open source space to get select cloud features. Since they are objectively forcing out a large amount of small teams and start-ups

For instance, I was planning to organize the data side of my consulting side there, but it doesn't make sense to do that anymore. So if someone's doing that now, it Christmas is gunna be fun switching over to your own solutions

AnEro··on Effect of Low-Carb, High-Fat Diet versus High-Carb, Low-Fat Diet
Exactly why it is normal that nutritional science is taken with a grain of salt, not cause researchers are slacking or producing bad studies. Just the fact they have data sources with a giant astrix attached.

Imho i think this also plays into the misinformation in the space. It's hard to prove anything and I find I mostly wait for a good meta analysis before putting my eggs in that basket

AnEro··on Modern data modeling: Start with the end?
I'm all in on DBT for several reasons:

1. One source of transforms for static data 2. Easy to do plug-in or changes, even 'materializations', are Jinja. So I can have custom implementation for a specific issue 3. DBT to Metabase documentation, still super new but imagine other tools getting intake of metadata and metrics from dbt 4. I'm the data team, and managing a huge amount of workflows. If I just use a select and not DML style of writing the queries, it will 'orchestrate' it for me. 4.1 I can have a quick version controlled workflow for a new report/kpi/metric that we don't know if it is even important yet. 5. The speed trade-offs are made up for with the time saved from point 4 6. Embeddable in to the datamesh I dream of no one knowing I use DBT or any software at all, its all just [company branding] magic

AnEro··on Why aren’t medical breakthroughs in obesity a bigger deal?
100% agree, however I do think we have to apply way more empathy cause losing weight is extremely hard and there are bigger factors that make it harder even if your fully educated and have good will power. Like time and money

I went from 250 to 200 then 200 to 170 pounds, first run I could afford the healthy alternative foods the second time I couldn't. It was 10x harder to lose the 30 pounds than the 50, not just cause higher body fat caused it to be easier to lose but cause the food filled me up. I couldn't afford to get the ideal ratio of protien or even really get about 90g of protein a day on my budget. I then had to be making all this food myself in order to have any filling meals, which took up the last bits of my free time as I was struggling to find contract work.

Of course you can make it yourself, but now you have to learn a bunch about nutrition and cooking, then also have the time to cook it. The super high calorie foods are exponentially cheaper, when you factor your time into it. Mcdoubles have a similar macro density if not better than a protein bar and are more filling. Before a price raise I could eat for 5 bucks in 10 minutes or eat for 1.5-2.5 be filled but lose 1-2hours research, gorceries, prep, and cooking. all of which is cheaper than giving up time you could be working or resting to work better.

I think the time and money to put to dieting is a luxury. I do agree we need to cut the BS excuses, but I do think that someone has a choice to be over weight if they only have a few hours to themselves opt to not spend those hours working but for their health and accept the consiquences. I think we need to focus on finding solutions for that person not the person with no drive to figure it out

AnEro··on Translate Between JSON and EDI
Even after the contracts being signed to make it complient, it was the pricing for what it is that gets us. It would be cheaper to write our own translation tool for our specific needs after 3 months of usage, and we are at a smaller scale than most for api calls.

Not sure which sweet spot they want to hit with this

AnEro··on Show HN: Open source data discovery and observability platform
Well like adding a test from panadas/great expectations, software looks great when its set up and already added. So trying to add one myself I just have to imagine, so great expectations make sense probably an API hook set up. But I'm using panadas mostly so how do I add one? Is it going to be more work to use existing tests? If so how much? Really I'm trying to timeline how long setting up everything from my pipeline inside the product as well. Since I want a junior doing alot of this aswell is this going to be weirdly hard for a math uni grad? You know?

The online demo I didn't see abilities to do that on that type of account, which idc just part of gauging how long it would take to go from 0 to running to useful for the company.

Thanks for the help I'm going to keep an eye out for the product in the future for sure. It’s just at the point it is still more work for me to see if I want to do the work to use it

AnEro··on Show HN: Open source data discovery and observability platform
Its not confusing its well written I just want more, but I get it's a community project and it takes time to do all this stuff for free. I'm just ~not so~patiently waiting for docs more around the person looking at set up vs the conceptual
AnEro··on Show HN: Open source data discovery and observability platform
I did see that and was disappointed. It described the features in full but I was looking to see the features set up to see if it is something I can easily integrate or not. Don't get me wrong love the idea and its young I don't fault the team but I'm not going to get a docker running just to find out i have to reformat all my tests or write way too many new connections to enable any of these features.
AnEro··on Show HN: Open source data discovery and observability platform
I can't wait until documentation gets filled out enough to see if I want to spend an afternoon importing all my pipelines to then see if it's useful for me
AnEro··on Why aren’t you using pretrained models?
People don't understand ML and AI well enough to do this, and don't realize a surface understanding of the math is all that is needed to create cool tools like this.

I ask you kindly to stop showing people, so I can keep feeling smart for knowing discrete mathematics /lh

AnEro··on The Anxiety of the Moderate
I get the author's point, I was a moderate too now I'm a 'doomer' because we 'moderate'-ed ourselves into useless discourse because a surprising amount of our political discussion is fluff. Even if solid science showing a correct direction for incremental change, getting all these ideologies to get their bases on the same page for it is impossible. There are a surprising amount of votes that are purged by region, and surprisingly obfuscated voting system to make it harder to vote properly, requiring more from voters than other western nations. So both sides realistically are pandering to 100-200k people that actually have the voting power for the rest of the nation so w/e they think and feel is what matters

What America understands as liberalism is actually a 'moderate-conservative' ideology in line with neo-liberalism. Where they will be socially liberal but fiscally conservative by most of the western worlds standards. Where the burnie holds the most popular ideas with majority of Americans surprisingly, but those who vote lean more neo-liberal so he is the underdog.

The right is more conservative ideologies big tent, including everyone from social to fiscal conservatives and everyone in between. Evangelicals are their main base, so they tailor everything to pivot around them, and now more so the trump base.

I feel like once anyone starts diving into the differences of ideologies in those in groups with each of those two groups, you become slightly less moderate. Then, if one looks at how each side's representatives on either side actually implemented policy, and the lobbiests all these figures speak with, they'll quickly find themselves not to be a moderate but a doomer.

AnEro··on Economic estimation of Bitcoin mining’s climate damages
sure
AnEro··on Economic estimation of Bitcoin mining’s climate damages
I see it as any other computer usage for new tech. I get what you're saying, I just word vomited, I'm more upset about the power gird situation. Especially in my area, anything being privatized enough to inflate prices but not enough that you have a choice in what 'grid' you get power from.

I am honestly very jaded about any news about climate change, shifting attention consumer side after seeing all the leaks happening. Sure bitcoin is wasteful but people are paying to be wasteful and are allowed to be doing that. I'd rather sort out the renewable energy source before convincing crypto bros of anything

AnEro··on Economic estimation of Bitcoin mining’s climate damages
Im not a web3 person at all but I find these comparisons to say Bitcoin is hurting the climate pointless. It's the electricity source is the problem. Sure it takes a ton of electricity to mine but why is it the consumer's fault for using a service they don't have another option to use. Are we supposed to switch powergirds? Are we supposed to all create our own green power grid?

It's awfully convenient it's the consumer's fault not large organizations and governments not upgrading a power grid when we knew this was an issue for decades

AnEro··on Character.ai
Is it unnecessary, or did they save spending money on your instance of an AI when you probably weren't going to pay them anyway?
AnEro··on Who cares about diversity?
I think people are confusing corporations vs people.

People want diversity and care about diversity, who optionally wants to exclude someone that has merit to participate in the work/activity. Of course bigots exist, but largely people try to respect people.

Corporations, care as much as it is profitable that is the purpose of the organization is to generate wealth for stakeholders.

The issue in my opinion is how subjective 'merit' is, where studies show two resumes with equal qualifications a name implying a race or gender alone is enough to change the results of which resume was chosen subconsciously.

People see this problem as how do you measure someone without bias? How do you measure the cultural impact one can bring? How do you measure <something we suck a measuring currently>

Corporations see this problem as, how do we stay diverse enough to not look evil? How do we make measure our diversity to prove that? THEN they approach the people's point of view on the issue, because above everything is shareholders earnings and therefore the optics. It's not even intentional to a degree, stop gap solutions to make corporation happy and people tolerant of the corporation

Calling it Orwellian is crazy though, it's just capitalism and governments trying to find a way to keep it fair for non-capital owners.

AnEro··on Ask HN: If academia is rewarding, why care about conferences and sabbaticals?
I was going to go into academia, however I sucked at it compared to private sector. Why? You have to hyper focus on one thing possible for years or decades to make an impact, this is either a strength or a weakness depending on the person. So how I see it, from someone that would love to really drill into every possible question into a subject:

Conferences are a great way to network, still get work done yet feel like you are participating in a larger community. My professors largely were mostly hermits to a degree, sure there were meetings but mostly to secure funding to organize with their junior hermits with their hyper focuses. So actually getting a chance to breath and hear what others are doing can be fun, also showing off your work must be incredibly satisfying to just be DONE.

Sabbatical, great way to refresh after hyper focusing on only a few topics, not getting much breathing room for other things. Largely I see this as a method for staying creative and staying up to date with what you otherwise would have missed.

AnEro··on Facebook shuts down its game streaming app after struggling to challenge Twitch
They snagged a few mid to larger streamers a year or two ago, then once contracts ended alot of them immediately moved to youtube for a fatter contract at the time or back to twitch for the viewership/community for growth.
AnEro··on Ask HN: Which startups are thriving in the downturn?
Knowing people that make under 60k a year, and how harder their lives got and how hard it is to pay back loans and other obligations they where ulitmately strong armed into taking to improve their position. Not to mention how alot of western nations have a large majority of people are pay check to pay check regardless of their tax bracket.

Working class is a good litmus of how the economy is doing vs S&P because speculation can ultimately make it look like everything is fine until it isn't

AnEro··on How rare is a Supreme Court breach? Very rare
Oh right just be rich or not live in red states, how could I be so stupid as to worry
