AnEro··on Developer with ADHD? You’re not alone
It's so annoying to have people that think they are just doing the 'don't throw the baby out with the bath water' but being honest how good can an executive function disability be?

It's like everyone is climbing a mountain, and they are wearing snow shoes, but I'm stuck with normal boots or worse. However, when I start having fun climbing I plucked off the ground by a ski lift that takes me to a random place up the mountain. If I'm travelling in groups or trying to reach a certain place, to not get lost I have to jump off the lift. Then I'm back to walking on foot, hurt but in an ache but not an actual damage and I have to try to keep up with the snow shoe folk again.

AnEro··on Insulin is way too expensive. California has a solution: Make its own
Honestly though some industry's products/services verifiably don't improve end user/customer experiences from maximizing profits. It's hard not to see it at this point
AnEro··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
I've been thinking the same, for me, it's also the work hours were to get ahead I have to do 60 hours on the business side AND homework to get more skills. Even just a part-time job or something to have a mental reset, money would be tight but every angle I see it could be easier to be happier.
AnEro··on Ask HN: How to encrypt data in a SQL database?
Yep!
AnEro··on Show HN: I turned my microeconomics textbook into a chatbot with GPT-3
I think of it at its peak that we are hyped/terrified about it will probably be like autocad's effect on its industry. Where now you need to know a lot more about functional and design and deep knowledge rather than some syntax. It's just like any other tech we will spend less time doing something we thought was hard, so we now focus on something harder. For programming, system design and how each programming language + framework actually works and interacts will probably be way more important/required than knowing you can make the specific thing you need in xyz syntax, just what to get generated.
AnEro··on Ask HN: How to encrypt data in a SQL database?
As I understand it, it's more scaling the company and managing the keys does become an issue if you handle those directly. Imagine explaining this stuff now to a junior dev lol. As for a database's own encryption, I would trust it as much as you trust the organization programming that database.

I manage keys with Azure since we are a Microsoft hybrid house.

AnEro··on DIY triple-screen laptop based on the framework
Thats it!!! I was wondering what vibe it gave, 100% retro futurist
AnEro··on Ask HN: How do you test SQL?
Personally I like using dimensions from each set and seeing if the business logic side lines up. So measure sales month over month with 2 different sources and/or have the full join count important fields on matches what makes it in and out of the combination as a score board.
AnEro··on Ask HN: How do you test SQL?
Enjoy, it's honestly the best resource I've seen on data teams that is open. https://about.gitlab.com/handbook/business-technology/data-t...
AnEro··on Ask HN: How do you test SQL?
With not complex data for sure, I think SQL testing is so much easier once you start having hierarchies and many to many relationships start piling up.
AnEro··on Ask HN: How do you test SQL?
Gitlabs has their guide up, I love it and use it all the time. I've been doing data engineering in a small team for about 4 years, helping hospitals with data and hopefully making it easier to understand. Something that is overlooked or undervalued in my opinion, have stark distinctions for separating out technical and business logic tests. It makes it easier communicating what's happening in the event something is 'wrong' vs wrong, and it's easier to bring a non-technically inclined team member up to speed. Also, I think it's good to learn from the SaaS side of things and not bloat up or overengineer with infrastructure as data engineering is the latest development flavour. Keep it simple. Great expectations is a great tool however I think small teams should take really hard looks at their needs and see if a simple orchestration engine and SQL testing is enough. A centralized source for testing is great, however infrastructure isn't free even when it is you are paying for it with you and your teams time.
AnEro··on DIY triple-screen laptop based on the framework
Did not expect it at all, it's so out of place I love it
AnEro··on DIY triple-screen laptop based on the framework
Great portable computer don't get me wrong. I'd make it impractical in different ways
AnEro··on DIY triple-screen laptop based on the framework
That's the coolest impractical laptop I've seen.
AnEro··on Big Tech is using layoffs to crush worker power
Very interesting I didn't know. But still I don't think they are intentionally flagging things that encourage unionization. However, I do think if it is related to their companies the will now that you say that lol
AnEro··on It's not you, it's SQL
Graph databases solve most of his issues, outside the complexity of queries.

If we are begging DB engineers for things can we get a graph layer for accessing SQL tables please?

AnEro··on Big Tech is using layoffs to crush worker power
Personally I subscribe to the 'you are what you eat' view of social media, we are social creatures, and we will always adjust ourselves to fit what we feel is THE group. Any media then makes subconscious biases whether we like it or not. I don't think YCombinator is doing brainwashing us or some crazy conspiracy, more we will conform to this audience's thinking which ultimately is about start-ups and tech company's and unions don't fit that narrative.

> Important to keep in mind this forum’s audience is a minority in everything except said forum’s viewership.

True but acting like Hacker news articles over years isn't one of the best social media based predictor of tech trends is a little silly

AnEro··on Big Tech is using layoffs to crush worker power
Doubt that will happen, we still go to this VC's website for content aggregation. Most are caught in hustle culter and want to be, and others are doing it for independance and power and won't want a union.

Ultimately I don't think our type of nerds will get together on this style of politics

AnEro··on Giving Four Months’ Notice or Paying to Quit Has These Workers Feeling Trapped
How is that still not predatory in the sense that you're then locking your skills related to that industry away for the rest of your/company's life? For what 2000? Personally the skills I have in my industry easily add 10k to 30k to my worth in my late 20's. I don't think any company can afford to make a fair compensation at scale to lock an employee out of working with any competitors aka being in the same industry again.
AnEro··on Elizabeth Holmes bought one-way ticket to Mexico after convicted of fraud
She actually said that or something like it, hence the paraphrasing warning. Also still I stand by my point outside of her own comments on her appearance, with everything we know so far. That was the only comment off the top of my head that she made could relate about playing the system
AnEro··on Elizabeth Holmes bought one-way ticket to Mexico after convicted of fraud
At this point does it matter that we are left with the assumption that the 'I'm not worried I'm too pretty go to jail' (paraphrasing) dude also tried to flee conviction
AnEro··on Stop Building on Corporate-Controlled Languages
I agree, but I do think that you have to think of the ecosystem of the language if the major cooperation steps away or dials back, maybe thinking of them more like 'dependency'. Go lived through community alone, how well will twitters projects hold up without their involvement because I imagine it's not very lean for twitter to spend time on.

I think this argument is better had for frameworks and JavaScript libs. Have caution about who you trust, especially in this new phase of everyone pivoting around AI/BI applications

AnEro··on Trusting Fatshark with Warhammer 40k: Darktide (2020)
I honestly think Cavil loves it enough to make the best possible version of what media giant approaching 40k as a series for the mainstream would be.

It is just about how good that is, and if that then captures enough non-40k fans for Amazon to justify the series as an 'Iron Man' moment. I think it has a chance because of how grim the younger public's perception of the future is and how very similar it is to the past where we were much more into the horror and Godzilla vibes at the movies. Where seeing something as dark and grim as 40k will scratch an itch we didn't think of until now.

AnEro··on GPT-3 is the best journal I’ve used
My nootropics stack is lacking obviously :c

I just had a 'wow I wish I had finished making that' moment, liked my own joke more than commenting with "Really cool, I was making something similar c:". HN could have more workplace nerd banter in my opinion

AnEro··on GPT-3 is the best journal I’ve used
Can we stop making fascinating things before I can, that would be great.
AnEro··on Genders.wtf
Pronouns if you don't need gender/ads but want a personal experience, then add gender for ad stuff and disclose it, if you don't need sex. Use modern terms where sex is referring to biology and gender as identity. Just avoid labelling and getting personal information all together when ever possible. When they do label I want it to just be the scientific definitions to keep things standard.
AnEro··on Genders.wtf
As a trans person I hate all half-assed inclusion measures, on top of the fact if I point this stuff out I sound like one of the 'bad ones'. It just made everything confusing whether it is asking for sex or gender. Medical stuff sure I'll disclose everything cause it's relevant to me getting good service. However, there are so many companies that want to just obviously use the info for ad revenue... What features are you bringing me that are improved cause you know my sex? What features are you bringing me that are improved cause you know I'm trans?
AnEro··on Ask HN: I'm 40 and feel my mental ability declining. Programming seems harder.
Why not go to a doctor/psych and start getting some blood work done to see if it's a brain fog, mental health or xyz thing? It sounds like you feel like you're loosing your working memory that you had previously, so why not see if good mental health, diet, exercise and professional insight might have. Worst case there you get healthier over all likely increased life expectancy but you're out some time/money

I don't know if this would help, but I'm in my later 20's. I didn't actually know how much my mental health played into how I performed, cause I felt fine. I went to a therapist it turns out I've been *redlining* anxiety most of my life I just got used to constantly operating at that level, and I was wondering why I wasn't getting the performance I thought I could give when doing fun non-stressful environments. It just snuck up and built up over years and that became a normal for me.

AnEro··on Politics and the English Language (1946)
So he basically predicted the current news cycle issues with American/western media political education. For example if it's not laissez-faire capitalism then it's socialism and heavens forbid the government is the one doing the work then it's communism. However, if you explain to the average person what bill/policy/plan does, alot more will agree and not care and think it's great until the buzzwords they remember to dislike come out.

Basically use buzzwords strategically, people will agree on more than one expects if you get to the core of what's happening. When you use buzzwords the connotations already is set and taints everything you use around them

AnEro··on What HHS has to say about tracking technologies in latest HIPAA guidance
Same, I'm kind of scared of what others have been doing up too now to warrant this.
