AmericanOP··on The internet's “town square” is dead
Demanding "Free speech" is just a lever for people on the fringe to bully for promotion via recommendation algorithms. It has nothing to do with values and everything to do with achieving objectives.

This was like the golden age of individuals furthering the zeitgeist of entrepreneurial discovery. A glowing recommendation from a luminary was like finding a missing piece of the puzzle.

AmericanOP··on Louis Rossmann calls community to leave Reddit
All of this is happening because Reddit Coins is a meme of a paid tier.

Discord understands its not about comments, its about communities. Give users a way to boost/upgrade the subreddits they love, so users have a better experience on those subreddits.

AmericanOP··on I am Steve Huffman, the new CEO of Reddit. AMA. (2015)
"Are there any specific plans for the Alien Blue app that you can share?"

> "I have lots of ideas! But, I'm sad to say, I don't want to publicize them here until I've got more support internally. It's shitty if you're on a product/dev team to come into work and find everything's been upended without any of your input."

Took three years but now we know the answer.

AmericanOP··on Reddit Doubles Down
There is definitely something wrong with discovery UX on youtube. I have many interests, but each of my devices has converged down to one topic based on usage. I don't know how to explore new topics, it's like I can only flip between my recommendation algorithm or global trending.
AmericanOP··on Reddit Doubles Down
A little crazy to me that Discord can create an attractive subscription tier while Reddit flounders.

Well, maybe not so surprising with their product team.

AmericanOP··on Reddit Doubles Down
Because its us vs them, don’t you get it? Us noisy, violent users getting in the way of the Snoos tribe big shiny IPO.
AmericanOP··on Reddit Strike Has Started
They wasted half a decade not building promised moderation tools for the people who create value on Reddit.

Instead they were busy running cost/benefit analyses on how aggressive the dark patterns to drive users to the maligned mobile app should be.

AmericanOP··on Black holes might be defects in spacetime
What I find curious is the “observed” properties of the whirlwinds within each and every proton & neutron are so phenomenally complex, I would not be surprised at all if the mathematical abstractions of strings represent another quantum ecosystem we may never be able to observe
AmericanOP··on Downtown San Francisco Whole Foods Closing a Year After Opening
The problem will persist until there is a major shift in local norms for policing and law enforcement.

A segment of the homeless can not be reached by social programs, and crime tourism is rampant.

The unspoken deal is law enforcement doesn't have to put themselves at risk for performative arrests, and the wider Bay Area doesn't have people pushed outwards from the city.

AmericanOP··on Ask HN: What helps you focus and get things done?
At age 35 I was diagnosed with ADHD. Woah! I try to minimize medication.

A few tricks..

1. An ADHD diagnosis looks at 5 areas, Activation, Effort, Memory, Attention and Affect. I struggle with Activation and Effort.

If I am inactive, I now know enough to say, "Activate!" And this gives me a trigger to change my behavior.

2. ADHD folk oft describe a phenomena where they excel under pressure or when doing tasks for others. There was a recent thread on /r/adhd where people offered to clean other's houses because they recognize they don't do things well for themselves!

As a mental trick, I externalize myself. I create myself as a person I want to do things for. Part of this is recognizing that when we do things for others, like cook a great meal or do a spring clean, we don't expect them to appreciate every detail of our work. We just want to impart a feeling of deliciousness or well-being. Similarly, do not ask your future self to marinate in every detail of your work- the goal is the overall feeling.

3. Thanks to life experiences, medication, and a lifelong infatuation with builder games like Factorio, I know what I am like and what I can do when a project engages me and I give it my full effort. Identify, Organize, Create/Act, Debug, Repeat. I now understand that moments of inspiration, medication, and grit & discipline are different paths to attain this state. Thus I have some control over summoning that state directly.

4. I now understand there is an emotional signal sent by the cerebellum that facilitates executive function- the impulse to get stuff done. Physical exercise, eating well, sleeping well, core things that reduce depressive feelings are correlated with improving executive function. Embrace it, treat your body well.

4. ADHD research & brain scans have identified two key mental states. The first is DMN, a passive-receptive state where memories and stimuli flow more freely. The second is TPN, when we become focused on tasks and the brain inhibits these stimuli. In people with ADHD, the DMN rarely quiets down. So now I can recognize that engaging with memories, good and bad, and various stimuli, are a part of how I function. I can somewhat identify that function, accept that its happening and maybe interfering, and politely ask it to relax.

I hope this helps.

AmericanOP··on Entrepreneurs who regret starting businesses

AmericanOP··on Joint statement by the Department of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and FDIC
SVB has assets but not liquidity. This is not like 2008 where the assets themselves are worthless.
AmericanOP··on Yellen says government will help SVB depositors but rules out bailout
Before people get too excited about letting it all burn, I recommend everyone watch this talk by an economist on the 2008 recovery:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrFSO62p0jk

Spoiler alert (18:30): It was entrepreneurship that turned the economy around. Not fed policy.

SVB put their deposits in US Treasury Bonds. Commonly regarded as the safest investment vehicle there is. Then the fed raised interest rates, completely screwing over this strategy. Then VCs panicked, like sheep.

So now we're in a situation where the most successful startups in the innovation sector are at risk of being wiped out while the US economy is being guided toward recession to cool inflation. Go watch that talk- then tell me you really think its a good idea to let it all burn.

AmericanOP··on Black holes as the source of dark energy
Similarly I recommend the ‘History of the Universe’ channel for an understanding of cosmology:

https://youtube.com/@HistoryoftheUniverse

AmericanOP··on Black holes as the source of dark energy
The expansion of space-time is an observed property of space. It has always been expanding, but at different rates.

My interpretation of this theory is that spacetime beyond the event horizon is also expanding. This expansion increases vacuum space, which contains vacuum energy.

This either correlates or is coupled with vacuum energy in our observable universe.

AmericanOP··on Why dark matter feels like cheating (and why it isn’t)
For a lay person with an interest in cosmology, please check out the History of the Universe YouTube channel. It’s really superb:

AmericanOP··on Ask HN: Why did medium.com "fail"?
Youtube has amazing infotainment right now. Its a super cool emergent phenomenon that there are soo many amazing niches filled by content creators putting out information dense 45 minute+ videos. I don't mind the ads in this case (vs some short clip), and they all seem to have sponsors as well.
AmericanOP··on Ask HN: Why did medium.com "fail"?
I cant think of a single platform thats doesn't ultimately lose relevance and get replaced that does this.

A few days ago people here said their Google trick is appending 'Reddit' to the query. Not Quora. Not other dedicated Q&A sites that have been around as long. Reddit the free (minus the dumbass mobile app prompt.)

Same for log-ins. Pinterest? Forget it. Twitter? Just missing a replacement.

I don't know what analytics compel these guys to put a gate in front the platform. Just accept what people are willing to give you. I guess they wake up one day and realize everyone just moved on.

AmericanOP··on Ask HN: How do you find stuff on the internet now?
Google is a better search engine of Reddit than Reddit. Especially the app search which is a bloody mess.
AmericanOP··on Ask HN: How do you find stuff on the internet now?
It is amusing I uninstalled the Reddit app because I use google as an entry-point so often and it’s really a pain universal links forced me to open the app for a worse experience.

Stupid product strategy to ignore Google!

AmericanOP··on Physicists teleport bullshit through wormhole
I enjoyed a recent panel by celebrity physicists where the point was made that current theories have plateau’d into the realm of metaphysics. Some were surprising sceptics of the use of purely mathematical models for things we will never be able to test experimentally.

Personally, their descriptions remind me of the early Christian eschatological debate that raged for centuries about the nature of an embodied god. I expect we’ve come full circle about things that remain stubbornly unknown.

AmericanOP··on Physicists teleport bullshit through wormhole
Oi. The great weakness of academics is the obsession with semantics. Debating the words used is a poor subsitute for exploring the concepts.

The experimenters are clear their ‘wormhole’ is a computational “hologram” of a one-dimensional wormhole. These operational words are the concept.

This was a computational experiment designed to show something akin to ER=EPR, or the idea that entanglement is equivalent to a wormhole, an ER bridge. Its a fascinating line of inquiry into what makes the stuff of our universe, and hopefully a few laypeople get to learn about it because of their work.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ER_%3D_EPR

This was never an experiment about the wormholes of science fiction, if that is how people read the headlines.
