Yeah I was taken a back as well, "sell gold? To whom??" To the people buying gold, is not reasonable to have to pinpoint who exactly that might be given there is not shortage.
AmbroseBierce··on Making a Small RPG
"Señora Benitez venga con nosotros... Que? A mi no me importa cuántas letras tiene nuestra agencia? Inhalar tanta pólvora a debido de afectarle el cerebro!"
AmbroseBierce··on Making a Small RPG
I bet "spare black powder" is one of those sentences that automatically puts you in some kind of list at some 3 letter gov agency.

The person behind www.pixellab.ai has been trying to make a SaaS out of that idea for about 2 years already and it just isn't there, the examples in the homepage are extremely cherry-picked, I bet most of their paying customers just use it as a starting point and then spend hours manually fix the sprites, which may be more than enough value for $12 a month and that's great but what is shows is that we are not as close as one would like to imagine, the "one leg in front of the other at about the same depth and the same color" is still problematic to this day; if most pants in the world had a different color for each leg I bet most of its animation issues would be solved, unfortunately we don't and most of the training data involves single-color pants/legs.

2D animators can still feel safe about their job, I asked it to generate a sprite sheet animation by giving it the final frame of the animation (as a PNG file) and asking in detail what I wanted in the spritesheet, it just gave me mediocre results, I asked for 8 frames and it just repeated a bunch of poses just to reach that number instead of doing what a human would have done with the same request, meaning the in-betweens to make the animation smoother (AKA interpolations)
AmbroseBierce··on A $1k AWS mistake
Imagine a world were Amazon was forced to provide a publicly available report were they disclose how many clients have made this error -and similar ones- and how much money they have made from it. I know nothing like this will ever exist but hey, is free to dream.
AmbroseBierce··on I am stepping down as the CEO of Mastodon
@dang if possible please stick this reply to the top, @gargron is the author himself (the CEO stepping down)
AmbroseBierce··on Show HN: Explore 2200+ games with Zero reviews on Steam
Ha, I made the fix but now Github is failing and I can't push the changes! Microsoft pls! Well I manually implemented a simpler fix while they git their s*** together, so try again and tell me if it worked.
AmbroseBierce··on Show HN: Explore 2200+ games with Zero reviews on Steam
Try scrolling down. From here when I open it in an incognito window (Chrome) it works fine, I just tried on Firefox too (which I never use) and its working fine there too, can you tell me what browser are you using? What do you see in the console? Maybe is due some extension that you are using?
AmbroseBierce··on Don't blindly trust what AI tells you, says Google's Sundar Pichai
Should I know, I mistakenly trusted Google when it told me there was a live music event last Sunday in a local bar, turns out Google's AI got confused because there is another bar with the same name in a different city here in Colombia, so I dressed up and everything just to go to a bar that was closed that day.
AmbroseBierce··on Blocking LLM crawlers without JavaScript
Maybe your agent is smart enough to determine that going against the wishes of the website owner can be detrimental to your relationship the such website owner and therefore the likelihood of the website to continue existing, so is prioritizing your long-term interests over your short-term ones.

Oh I wasn't talking about that part of the equation, in the money regards I think in the people_money table we would be better off running "truncate"

AmbroseBierce··on Using Generative AI in Content Production
Totally, Titanfall 2 is one of my favorite games ever, but by the time I discovered the multiplayer was pretty much dead, no players and no recent updates.
AmbroseBierce··on Using Generative AI in Content Production
Not me, the mix of parkour with multiplayer shooting with beautiful highly detailed maps it's something I like a lot, nothing even compares in that regard, I know the game is a shameless skin store but I do appreciate the former, although I also hate how small a lot of maps are, glances at Nuketown
AmbroseBierce··on Using Generative AI in Content Production
Or they can do like Call of duty, that just makes skins "heavily inspired" by other franchises they don't own, the week Borderlands 4 came out they put a few cell shaded skins that heavily resembles the look of that game's characters, there is one that skin that is pretty much like reptile from mortal Kombat called "vibrant serpent", they got a bit of heat in May of this year for releasing a skin that looked too much like one from another game called High On Life, and the list goes on. It reminds me a lot of the disguises they sell on Spirit Halloween during every October.

And yes I know they do legal and agreed partnerships like with the Predator franchise, or the Beavis and Butt-Head franchise (yes they exist in CoD now...), and those only count for a tiny number of the premium skins.

AmbroseBierce··on My Git history was a mess of 'update' and 'fix' – so I made AI clean it up
I would be more interested in an hybrid approach, an AI that when has low confidence in a generated commit message asks the user for their input: "Was this change meant to fix a bug? y/n" and about splitting commits "you changed 6 html files and 1 SQL file, they seem unrelated" should I split that into 2 separated commits? y/n"
AmbroseBierce··on Sued by Nintendo
Google AI Studio by mistake let me generate this image of mario hanged, I know it was by mistake because further attempts always throwed unspecific legal reasons, even if nothing that could be perceived as violent was included, I think I am gonna put it on a t-shirt soon, if for any reason someone here wants it here it is: https://i.imgur.com/j4ebG2D.png

I think this falls under the fair use doctrine for being a satiric piece (says "nintendont" instead of nintendo) but you never know these days.

AmbroseBierce··on My Git history was a mess of 'update' and 'fix' – so I made AI clean it up
Yeah, same rationale that Elon shared for renaming Twitter to X, so for good or evil you have that trillionaire mindset pinned down.

Sorry but I am voting for the opposite solution, meaning:

    with Session( engine ) as session:
        youngest_ids_subq = (
            select( func.max( People.id ).label( "max_id" ) )
            .group_by( People.name )
            .subquery()
        )

        purge_stmt = (
            delete( People )
            .where( People.id.not_in( select( youngest_ids_subq.c.max_id ) ) )
        )

        session.execute( purge_stmt )
        session.commit()

    unique_idx = Index( "uq_people_name", People.name, unique=True )
    unique_idx.create(bind=engine)

Brenda has been getting slower over the years -as we all have-, but soon the boss will learn that it was a small price to pay for knowing well how to keep such house of cards from collapsing.
AmbroseBierce··on When stick figures fought
I think it made teenage me empathize a bit more with my parents, about how bleak can existence feel.
AmbroseBierce··on When stick figures fought
I made a few Flash animations and a couple made it to and MTV show here in Latin America called "Flash MTV" that featured some of the animations people sent them, unfortunately I no longer have a copy of any of them and they don't seem to be online, although you can find some made by other people on YouTube.

My initial career idea was to become an animator but I found forums of senior animators complaining about low wages and long hours and it made me second guess myself about all that and I slowly picked up programming instead, I did get a copy of a great book called "The Animator's Survival Kit" by Richard Williams, best known for directing "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", the book still lives in my library and I hold it in great steem.

AmbroseBierce··on When stick figures fought
These animations got me into Flash and soon after into programming thanks to ActionScript, one copycat music video that maybe made even stronger impression in teenage me was a sad adult-themed music video from 2004, I just found ii after looking online for a bit: I love death - Lodger (Finnish band) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=BoFQV4jXun4
AmbroseBierce··on Google pulls AI model after senator says it fabricated assault allegation
Perhaps we should make sure that the human sources are liable for making false allegations and therefore the likelihood of those fabrications existing in the first place is significantly reduced, so any machine -or any other entity- using public information available is more likely to be correct.
AmbroseBierce··on Show HN: Why write code if the LLM can just do the thing? (web app experiment)
I should know I am one of them, I mean exclusively the robot part.
AmbroseBierce··on Facts about throwing good parties
I think that making people doubt about it like you just did it's intentionally a bit of the comedic value.
AmbroseBierce··on Facts about throwing good parties
Yes but it probably has a bigger overlap with the kind of people that would use Google to find an article that says how to throw a good party.
