Alleyfield··on How to build discipline and brainwash yourself
I already have one. :)

I didn't question whether this book has worked for you or not, it's good if it has and more power to you.

It's about the reader's own attitude towards it. If you really believe in those passages (which, based on the passage, seem to be written like horoscopes) then of course they're going to work for you. Just like horoscopes magically seem to work into every situation.

In my humble honest opinion, advice like "I will persist until I succeed" just creates train wrecks. Especially when repeated 75 times in a month. I also believe that self help books like this one tend to cloud the reader's judgement and inflate their egos - which is not nice.

Alleyfield··on How to build discipline and brainwash yourself
Why couldn't I just make a little book for myself that would include inspirational quotes from my own personal heroes and just read them out aloud them every day?

I mean seriously... That example scroll just seemed kinda tootsy wootsy, some might even say "gay", like in a harry-potter-fantasy-world kind of way.

Alleyfield··on Napping at work. A company that gets it.
I feel that some absolute time limits for napping is a no no for me. I grab my keys to my other hand and I extend that hand over the bed. It takes some time to get used to the idea of having the keys on your hand while trying to nap, but soon enough you'll forget you're holding the keys on your hand. Eventually you'll drop the keys at the exact moment you doze off and that's a clear sign from yourself that you've hit the time limit of a nap. There's no need to set your alarm clock for a 20-30min nap.

The alarm will inevitably go off during the wrong moment.

If you try to keep something in your hands (which will make a sound once fallen) you'll get the alarm at the exact moment you strive for.

Alleyfield··on Google's new data center in Finland
To fulfill your curiosity - No. I knew it beforehand as I'm a Finn myself.

And here's the first logo of Nokia. It's quite, uhm, interesting compared to what they're doing at the moment, wouldn't you agree http://www.about-nokia.com/images/nokia-logo1.jpg

Alleyfield··on Google's new data center in Finland
We're talking about the baltic sea here. Its average depth is 55m.

Besides, it's already quite contaminated so there is a lot of environmental protection going around it.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/eb/BalticSea...

As you can see, there really isn't places for the water to flow back and forth, so it's not a case of "the ocean is going to handle it"

Always consider the context.

Alleyfield··on Google's new data center in Finland
What's even more interesting is that prior deciding to produce mobile phones - Nokia's biggest asset was producing rubber boots.
Alleyfield··on [dead]
It was more than a non-answer.

Steve knows what's best for Apple. It's his company.

Making multiple versions is not what makes apple's products stand out. It's not something that makes them special. Making multiple versions would dilute Apples core products & business logic.

Alleyfield··on [dead]
The author is asking Apple to dismiss its business logic which has made Apple the best.

What kind of an answer did he seriously expect?

Alleyfield··on Ask HN: What do you know about stocks/securities barriers and startups?
Those aren't exactly questions I know how to phrase for Google, nor are highly published or easy to find.

...

And that's exactly why no one is going to give you that information free even in a friendly community like HN.

this is literally the first hour of research I've put into this.

And in that lies the reason why the person who has the answers views your request as an insult.

Have some understanding for your fellow human being.

Alleyfield··on Ask HN: What do you know about stocks/securities barriers and startups?
At least to me, those questions imply that you wouldn't be ready for that kind of a startup.

Look it up yourself. Somewhere out there people are starving for that knowledge.

And anyway, wouldn't it take the fun out of the journey if someone were to actually answer to your questions?

Alleyfield··on College students spend less and less time studying, leisure time on the rise
It's somewhat depressing to see this in action as well - but I don't really mind. It's easier for the nerds to stand out from the rest.
Alleyfield··on Ask HN: What are some good examples/templates of business plans?
Your question seems a bit silly to me.

Just answer to these questions in your business plan: -When can the VC expect profit? -What makes your team/product so special?

If you're going to make a business plan based on a template... Well... How are you going to stand out from all of the other templates?

Alleyfield··on Study: Older Profs Better at teaching in Advanced Courses
Older profs are better in general imo. They've used to teach with finite methods of conveying your points...

Now there's these new professors who have been blinded by the boundless possibility of telling too much stuff with powerpoint slides - you can always create another slide to tell everything...

Alleyfield··on Ask HN: I have a startup idea, the project is 90% done. But..
Dating advice for a person who's shy are as useless as a chocolate teapot - the problems are in the fact that he's shy, not that he'd desperately need dating advice.
Alleyfield··on Ask HN: I have a startup idea, the project is 90% done. But..
Emotional obstacles? They are something you have to overcome by yourself.

You're like a shy person asking for dating advice.

No one can help you but yourself.

Selecting the features seems complex and very alienating for less geeky customers.

"Idea Tagging"

Okay, the average user has no idea whatsoever of what you're trying to sell. He clicks for more information.

"Allow your users to tag ideas. Top tags are optionally displayed in a tag cloud widget you can drop into your layout."

Now there's more questions than answers.

I'd suggest that you'd keep in mind these two valid concepts:

- Design for people who don't read http://www.joelonsoftware.com/uibook/chapters/fog0000000062....

- You can't tell people anything http://habitatchronicles.com/2004/04/you-cant-tell-people-an...

Alleyfield··on Ask HN: What are your best life hacks/best tools in life/time savers?
I understood that he meant being in a bus/train/van-pool/subway/ferry. The point that I was trying to make was that trying to do "something useful" while commuting is, at least to me, pretty annoying - there's so much distraction going on around you that your chances of actually having attention to the task you're doing are slim.

And time without attention is time wasted.

Ultimately you might find yourself using 24/7 of your time in practicing things - and realizing that you've understood nothing.

And then you're ready to welcome the burnout

Alleyfield··on Ask HN: What are your best life hacks/best tools in life/time savers?
I highly doubt the effectiveness of polyphasic sleep. I myself found myself physically fatigued when I tried something like that.

So, based on my own (little) experience, my muscles need the long rest that a good night's sleep gives.

And doing "something useful" while commuting... Well ain't there a sure sign for disaster?

Hmm. Now don't get me wrong, but your post seems to be coming from a guy who's heading enthusiastically straight into a total mental burndown...

Alleyfield··on How to Afford Anything
The point I was trying to make was that accusing someone of being stupid for shopping in boutiques tells more about your lack of perspective for other people - which is one definition of one being stupid.
Alleyfield··on BP buys 'oil spill' sponsored links for search engines
Well ain't that great pr...

I believe that BP's pr department consists of old pr people past their prime - people who're still living in a world where there's only a couple of information sources (TV, Newspapers) and they're putting those strategies into use in the modern world...

And the end result?

Endless blog posts about how BP has done an awful job of clearing that mess up

Alleyfield··on Freeing Europe's top tech talent to build pioneering companies
Oh wow.

The cliche with a little snippet of code asking the audience to raise hands ("look at us we're such nerds!")... Tasteful.

They spoke a lot but said nothing.

Somehow it's funny to see how the audience might be a little more informed than the presenters... Especially the question at around 23:00 to me seems like a big "fuck you" to the presenters. The sigh at 23.22 sends chills through my spine as the presenter knows that he hasn't got any clue of how to answer to that nerd-question - but he won't be able to admit that because then he wouldn't be such a nerd he thinks he is.

I love it.

Alleyfield··on Freeing Europe's top tech talent to build pioneering companies
The site is just way too "IN YOUR FACE" for my liking.

Because it's so "IN YOUR FACE" and "made for nerds" I almost get a feeling that the whole thing is a huge insult to every serious hacker out there.

...Especially the flow chart seems so fucking insulting to me. Yaddayaddayaa, yes, every geek likes starwars & light sabers, yes we've read the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, yes, we've seen the back to the future trilogy etc.

In my opinion, funding entrepreneurship shouldn't be about making jokes on stereotypes. We're talking about peoples livelihoods here - not about star wars kids.

I like the idea but not the execution.

...And the art is in the execution.

Alleyfield··on How to Afford Anything
We love Wal-Mart and Costco. They have the best prices on almost everything. We're not afraid to admit it; we think people who shop boutiques to buy the same things in fancier surroundings are stupid.

So you go to a walmart, see the elderly greeters at the door, feel sorry for them, then walk miles just to get the one thing and get back to the cashier to stand in a line...

vs.

You drive near a boutique, you get real personalized service, there's someone to help you all the time if you have any questions, the surrounding is a lot nicer, the whole process of buying that thing is much faster and much more comfortable.

Saying that people who shop boutiques to buy the same things are stupid just conveys a message that you are too constricted in your own scope of cheapness... And that's maybe a bit stupid.

Alleyfield··on I am designing and developing free websites for startups on HN
Hmm.

If you're going to sell your work for free... Well, imo, you're making the market of web design worse for every player of that market, which would, consequently, lower the general bar among web design in the long run

But that's a bit far fetched.

The first comment has a point, if you haven't read that article... Well, you should.

Cheers

Alleyfield··on Cells. A massively multi-agent Python programming game.
Why the down vote? Is someone trying to imply that Cells isn't a sophisticated version of the Game of Life?

I might be blunt, but I'm not trying to be rude on purpose

Alleyfield··on Cells. A massively multi-agent Python programming game.
So... Basically "cells" is nothing more than a sophisticated version of John Convay's Game of Life? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conways_Game_of_Life
Alleyfield··on How or where to meet geek friends?
You're asking how to meet geek friends (with the help of internet - in a forum full of geeks...)

Doesn't the answer lie in the question?

Alleyfield··on Ask HN: At what point does a 'website' become an 'application'?
Do you consider facebook as a site which has applications or is it an application?

If someone were to speak about the functionalities of the site called facebook - then would using the term "site" make facebook sound less serious?

Alleyfield··on Ask HN: At what point does a 'website' become an 'application'?
imho that's just semantics.

Make the terms clear at the start of the discussion - argument why you're using a term application instead of a website.

Wouldn't that clear it up?
