AlgebraFox··on Google confirms Android attacks; no fix for most Samsung users
Faster than Google. Literally.

AlgebraFox··on GrapheneOS is the only Android OS providing full security patches
This is the correct response. I use both GrapheneOS and LineageOS. But LineageOS focus is on delivering newer versions of Android to many phones abandoned by their OEM. GOS exclusively focuses on security and privacy. If you want a reasonably secure phone but don't want Google or Apple inside your device, your best bet is GOS.
AlgebraFox··on GrapheneOS is the only Android OS providing full security patches
Yes. They've parterned with an OEM. In fact, they are making an official GOS phone with that OEM.
AlgebraFox··on I tried to build a WhatsApp bot. Meta banned me before it left the drawing board
Atleast you were trying to poke around their APIs. My WhatsApp account was banned totally for no reason. They blocked my two year old account for the only possible reason of using GrapheneOS. This company deserves to die.
AlgebraFox··on France is taking state actions against GrapheneOS?
It's true with Indian journalists. You say one thing and they twist it the other way around.
AlgebraFox··on Your smartphone, their rules: App stores enable corporate-government censorship
What about when Google pushed Android Safety Core to all Android devices out there?

And you also realize they can push modified build of any apps, now that they also own the keys to sign the apps?

AlgebraFox··on Your smartphone, their rules: App stores enable corporate-government censorship
While censorship is one thing, they forgot another overlooked ability of these app stores: pushing unwanted apps/services to our personal devices without our knowledge. The fact that the majority of people don’t care about this censorship and backdoors makes me think we don’t really appreciate the concept of freedom, and maybe we are okay with being slaves—at least until we cannot take it anymore. Maybe that’s why history repeats itself every few decades to remind us about these values.
AlgebraFox··on The disguised return of EU Chat Control
No. Signal will pull out their services from EU. Nobody will be able to download or access Signal.
AlgebraFox··on [dead]
Apple and Google dominates the entire smartphone market today. They are ad companies running on surveillance economy. In addition, their platforms are proprietary, privacy invading and freedom disrespecting.

GrapheneOS is the only security and privacy focused alternative we have today. Please support GrapheneOS by nominating them in the 2025 Proton Lifetime Fundraiser.

AlgebraFox··on Australia Mandates Encryption Backdoors
So at any point in time, atleast one government pushes for encryption backdoors. I can't wait to see the faces of these morons when the backdoor backfires on their own government secrets.
AlgebraFox··on Leaker reveals which Pixels are vulnerable to Cellebrite phone hacking
I am sure that will cause a lot of trouble in many countries. How hard is it to click Record button for the important calls? I don't think a small project like GrapheneOS should spend time on every small request users want.
AlgebraFox··on Keep Android Open
Why do you need attesation? Why do you think Google should own that device and not the user?
AlgebraFox··on What we talk about when we talk about sideloading
> as they'll detect your root

A small clarification, neither GrapheneOS or LineageOS runs as root. Rooting is different from "installing an alternate OS".

AlgebraFox··on What we talk about when we talk about sideloading
Instead it would be great if you join the fight against Google (and Apple) by using FOSS and independent distributions like GrapheneOS. It is the most secure and private option we have today. Most apps work as it is except a few those who purposefully use Google Play Integrity API to block independent platforms.
AlgebraFox··on My WhatsApp account was banned for no reason
No. Maybe a couple of messages every week to known people.
AlgebraFox··on IPv6 adoption just shy of 50%; 49.76% on 26th July
Reports say IPv6 is gaining market share. But most ISPs are delegating /64 prefix. This is as useless as carrier grade NAT. Atleast with IPv4, I can create NATed subnets for guests, IoT devices etc. That's not possible with IPv6.

Overall it's a negative progress. Worse than IPv4+NAT.

AlgebraFox··on ChatControl: EU wants to scan all private messages, even in encrypted apps
This. ChatControl proposal is an act of terrorism. Doesn't matter it's done by those in power.
AlgebraFox··on YouTube addresses lower view counts which seem to be caused by ad blockers
uMatrix is not maintained. Use NoScript or uBlockOrigin.
AlgebraFox··on Firefox 143 for Android to introduce DoH
Quad9 (supports DoH,DoT,Dnscrypt) and Mullvad are both good secure DNS services.

Choose Quad9 if you want better security and Mullvad for it's adblocking options.

AlgebraFox··on Man jailed for parole violations after refusing to decrypt his Tor node
To those who say TOR, VPN, Signal, GrapheneOS or <replace with any privacy tool> is dead, we should use more of them not less. Today privacy became crime because the tech crowd (including many in HN community) ignored slow eradication of our fundamental freedom by evil companies like Apple (Yes, Apple. Don't forget they worked with NSA.) and Google. If crowd like HN is seduced by new AI enhanced, costly and locked phones, then how can a regular citizen understand freedom or privacy?

Freedom is being taken away by govt, because we are making choices that surrender it.

AlgebraFox··on Germany is not supporting ChatControl – blocking minority secured
Encryption cannot be stopped. But Android and iOS can be backdoored. These evil companies lock down our devices, does not allow apps to run without their approval, and selectively push updates from their servers to our devices.

This is a wet dream for governments.

AlgebraFox··on GrapheneOS and forensic extraction of data (2024)
They've clearly explained here. I'm not sure how many people would keep asking the same question without even doing a simple web search.

AlgebraFox··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
They really got into your head, huh?
AlgebraFox··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
CalyxOS is already dead. GrapheneOS is the only hope.

AlgebraFox··on Wikipedia loses challenge against Online Safety Act
They might ban the CEO and employees from entering their country or arrest them when they travel.
AlgebraFox··on The future is not self-hosted
IMO, that is worst of both worlds. You still put your data out there on somebody else's computer but also get to maintain the infrastructure.

Unless you end-to-end encrypt your data, hosting on a VPS is just a marginal improvement over using Google or Apple's regular cloud.

To me self-hosted is having full control over the data. That includes where the data is stored, not just who's maintaining it.

AlgebraFox··on Microsoft Teams will soon block screen capture during meetings
GrapheneOS allows call recording. I believe LineageOS also allows.
AlgebraFox··on Getting Forked by Microsoft
This is not getting forked by Microsoft. This is getting forked by permissive licenses.
AlgebraFox··on Experimental release of GrapheneOS for Pixel 9a
What problem do you think Play Integrity solve other than keeping the user's under Google's walled garden? Play Integrity is a fake marketing term for DRM fromGoogle . It does not guarantee security of the device in any way. My 6~ year old and unpatched Android 10 passes Play Integrity and can run banking apps. That explains everything about Play Integrity. I don't use apps from developers who think they know better than their users.
AlgebraFox··on Show HN: Fast Transition from Firefox to Librewolf
