AlfredBarnes··on In Praise of RSS and Controlled Feeds of Information
Something else i HIGHLY recommend is subscribing to youtube channels Via RSS. You ACTUALLY KNOW WHEN SOMETHING IS NEW. I've gone way down on my youtube watching rabbit holes since I only engage with it when I have a new video.
AlfredBarnes··on In Praise of RSS and Controlled Feeds of Information
I recently made a little RSS feed reader, and its barebones lives on my machine, and is powered by python.

I never could get into any of the RSS reader software it all seemed very happy to put random things in the feed that i didn't care about. A strict timeline of things i want to read is all I want. If there is nothing new there is nothing new and I'm okay with that.

Thanks for the write up and read.

AlfredBarnes··on Microsoft blocks Israel’s use of its tech in mass surveillance of Palestinians
Why build something near or semi near conflict?
AlfredBarnes··on Microsoft blocks Israel’s use of its tech in mass surveillance of Palestinians
A tale as old as time.
AlfredBarnes··on Just let me select text
One of my ticks is repeatedly highlighting text over and over. I blame years of drone splitting.

It also helps me focus on reading.

AlfredBarnes··on I regret building this $3000 Pi AI cluster
My pi's are just an easy onramp for me to have a functional NAS, PIHole, and webcam security.

Not at all the best, but they were cheap. If i WANTED the best or reliable, i'd actually buy real products.

AlfredBarnes··on Epistemic Collapse at the WSJ
The internet has allowed anyone to build a voice/following. Whether they should or not.
AlfredBarnes··on iPhone dumbphone
I think it can be starting point for some, then slowly reintroducing the distractions when they build up those muscles.
AlfredBarnes··on I tried every todo app and ended up with a .txt file
I use a very basic system similar to this idea of running TODO.txt, but they are notecards i write every day. I sit them Infront of me and any timed tasks go onto the calendar. Outlook Calendar has notifications so those are my prompts for time based activities.
AlfredBarnes··on So Much Blood
A nice write up! Thanks for making it.

I used to donate ever opportunity I could. I only stopped for medical reasons. I know there are a lot of companies that sell the blood, but it's still needed and can save a life.

AlfredBarnes··on Someone at YouTube Needs Glasses
I used this to make a Youtube viewer "application" that lists my subscriptions most recent videos, and i can watch them when i get a chance. Just a list. no thumbnails, no click bait, no random algorithm recommendations, just stuff i want to watch.
AlfredBarnes··on Someone at YouTube needs glasses
Also if you do watch shorts, they are ALL added to your liked Videos.
AlfredBarnes··on The Danglepoise
I was just about to make a retractable light setup for my workshop. I hadn't thought of automating/motorizing it.

A simple pull reel was my goto, but that doesn't work in this application. Amazing work very smart and looks like a fun project.

AlfredBarnes··on I do not want AI to "polish" me
Do you know if there is a windows equivalent? I cant seem to find one that is as well done as this MacWhisper.
AlfredBarnes··on How much do I need to change my face to avoid facial recognition?
I would be very surprised if every large grocery store isn't already trackin every customers movement. It would be relatively cheap to implement.
AlfredBarnes··on OpenAI o1 system card
Thank you for doing that work, and even more for sharing it. I will have to try this out.
AlfredBarnes··on Sitters and Standers
I was getting consistent headaches at work, and attributed it to my coworkers being obnoxious. Then I brought in an air quality monitor, turns out my building had some serious ventilation issues, and there was not clean air at my desk.
AlfredBarnes··on Fish have a brain microbiome – could humans have one too?
How much of the thinking/feeling would be due to this microbiome? Is this how people develop mental illnesses? Such an interesting topic! I hope it gets the funding it needs!
AlfredBarnes··on The rise of digital housekeeping: the hidden work of smart technology
I thought this article was going to be about organizing things in our digital lives.

A lot of devices are pivoting to being "smart" but they aren't viewed as appliances. They need to just work, not be fancy. I have a lot of appliances that have some sort of wifi connection ability, but i don't need a notification on my phone when my laundry is done it already sings a song, or I've set a timer.

The items in my house that actually are helpful to have on our wifi, and be "smart" are the ones that I fret about being off or closed in the case of our garage door, or outside lights.

AlfredBarnes··on Electrobun: Cross-platform desktop applications written in TypeScript
Interesting to watch it grow. I'm not going to jump in right away, but this is a great project!
AlfredBarnes··on Hand Tracking for Mouse Input (2023)
I did a very similar project a few months back. My goal was to help alleviate some of the RSI issues I have, and give myself a different input device.

The precision was always tricky, and while fun, i eventually abandoned the project and switched to face tracking and blinking so i didn't have to hold up my hand.

For some reason the idea of pointing my webcam down, didn't dawn on me ever. I then discovered Project Gameface and just started using that.

Happy programming thank you for the excellent write up and read!

AlfredBarnes··on Coca-Cola's annual Christmas commercial this year is AI-generated
I sincerely don't think people care. Coca Cola doesn't care either. It was cheaper for them to create, and they can now use those funds for more dispersal of the ad it self. They are just trying to get people within the first 2 seconds to think about Coke.
AlfredBarnes··on IMG_0416
What a lovely idea!
AlfredBarnes··on OpenVMM – A New VMM for Windows and Linux, Written in Rust
Rust was something i thought was a cute little language years ago, much like i thought python was. I didn't pay attention for like 2 years and it feels likes it's everywhere and everything.

Time to learn.

I am also in this boat. I don't want to have to buy in for ink for $50 every 3 months.
AlfredBarnes··on Halo 2 in HD: Pushing the Original Xbox to the Limit
Nostalgia runs hard! So many hours spent in that game. I'm happy someone is also as in enamored with the magic as I am!
AlfredBarnes··on Two nights of broken sleep can make people feel years older, finds study
This is one of those "no shit" articles.
