Apple requires a hardware activation, especially if you forgot to sign out from Find My Mac before a factory reset. So the answer is no.
Aldo_MX··on Coming Soon: Fedora for Apple Silicon Macs
There's a matrix where you can find which hardware is supported in a specific model: https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/Feature-Support

My non-educated guess is that the hardware currently in WIP (like Thunderbolt or DP Alt Mode) is the one they'll release at the end of August.

Aldo_MX··on Zig: Upcoming release postponed two more weeks and lacks async functions
I really appreciate the honesty. It is not the end of the world to delay a highly anticipated feature, especially when the delay was a consequence of prioritizing the long-term stability of the codebase over the promised delivery date.

I'm not sure if the Jetbrains model backfired with the Ukraine war, considering most of the dev team was Russian and they decided to close the Russian offices.

I remember that the launch of the 2022 versions had a drop in quality, I don't remember when was the last time I had crashes in a Jetbrains product, but with the launch of 2022 versions crashes occurred on a daily basis to the point I really considered cancelling my subscription, and I activated for the first time the option to block updates in Jetbrains Toolbox.

Months later they launched their promotion to keep the current pricing for 3 more years and I renewed. I acknowledge that promotion was a genius move by them, but I'm unsure if that promotion was a result of a drop in income for them.

Well, back in the day the FF devs said "no" to background-position-x and y in CSS (when we didn't had HTTP 2 and we used CSS sprites as a way to load websites faster by decreasing the number of connections).

My reaction was to "sabotage" FF users by prioritizing IE and Chrome and not actively testing my websites in FF, but only waiting until users reported bugs.

My thinking back in the day was: Why would I write N times more lines of code for a browser that had way less market share than Internet Explorer, especially when Chrome was faster and worked better?

By the time Firefox corrected course and prioritized parity with other browsers (ie. the -webkit fiasco), their market share was already an order of magnitude smaller.

15 years later, I don't feel proud of my actions, but my own conclusion is that every individual action added up. Now I feel sad to see Firefox with less than 3% market share because the damage is irreparable now.

In my own experience, I found out GNOME 40+ to be more polished UI-wise than MacOS. I was really surprised when I installed Fedora Silverblue the first time. And also I'm a bit upset that MacOS seems to have stalled, and when Apple adds changes is to make it look more and more like iOS.

For the mobile apps the missing piece of the puzzle is Capacitor.

Also, look for React Testing Library to complement Jest.

Aldo_MX··on Facebook says Apple is too powerful – they're right
Do they? The last time I checked news about Windows they were making big efforts to make Linux apps run[1].

And considering the state of the art of Linux GPU Drivers, maybe using Windows will be the only feasible way to actually run Linux apps.

> You wouldn’t have an Electron app on iOS anyways.

You're missing the forest for the trees. The issue is not building an app specifically with Electron, but building an app which requires a browser. The browser is expensive in terms of resource usage, which results in less battery life.

Using a browser is OK for an app intended for a light usage session (like booking a flight). But not OK for an app which is intended for heavy usage sessions (like browsing pictures in an infinite timeline).

There's a reason Slack (which already has a reputation of impacting your battery life) decided to create a native app for mobile instead of using an Electron-like framework like Capacitor[1].

Aldo_MX··on Facebook says Apple is too powerful – they're right
I don't know, let me ask the anti-Electron gang their thoughts about less battery life just by running a browser environment instead of a native app.
Aldo_MX··on Facebook says Apple is too powerful – they're right
> that's only because Tumblr wanted to be on the App Store

Yeah, because the iOS ecosystem is well known for allowing competition, especially competing stores.

Many of the issues that Apple create wouldn't exist if competing stores were allowed to exist.

Aldo_MX··on Notes on WebAssembly
> If it hasn't happened yet, it probably won't happen at any time in the future.

Remember that ads is an unethical arms race and there was a time where ad companies were using VBScript to create system-level popups which defeated any popup blocker.

The question is not if it will happen, but when and what will be the consequences.

Aldo_MX··on Zig self hosted compiler is now capable of building itself
I think it is better to compare Flutter with Apache Cordova / Ionic Capacitor, as Flutter actually has a DOM tree behind the scenes, but instead of using a Web View to render the application Flutter renders the app directly to a GPU Accelerated surface using Skia.
Aldo_MX··on Show HN: Warp, a Rust-based terminal
How to make me completely gain interest in a piece of software: Announce it as being Rust based as mitigating an entire class of memory issues is an important feature I do care about.

> It seems weird to add all this syntax and not have any way to leverage it during runtime.

Just because they're not leveraging them today, it doesn't mean that they won't do it tomorrow. If a proposal requires a big effort to implement it, it will probably never become adopted.

Aldo_MX··on First look: adding type annotations to JavaScript
This is like saying compare the lines using generators or proxies vs the lines using type annotations.

Just because a feature is not widely adopted it doesn't mean that is not useful to the people using it, especially when the feature is used to mitigate the entire "cannot find property of undefined" type of errors.

Aldo_MX··on First look: adding type annotations to JavaScript
> but I've been using JavaScript for close to 20 years now

How dare you use JavaScript for anything else than validating forms!!! What is that jQuery thing??? Stop trying to make JavaScript into something it's not!!!
