AjithAntony··on How to encrypt your entire life in less than an hour
I like Keepass becuase it is not tied to any ongoing subscriptions or providers. You can use the file sync tool of your choice to distribute your file. The downside/feature is not having tight browser/app integration.
AjithAntony··on One week with the Google Pixel
The smatttering of any of the google apps is all you need. One you contaminate the device with google and google play services, then all bets are off. Your opportunities to turn off google tracking are the same for these as the pixel or other nexus phones.

Like don't use the google "now" or "pixel" launchers. Turn off google on tap. Etc..

AjithAntony··on Most Germans don’t buy their homes, they rent
Yeah, not married, so there is not that particular stakeholder motivating cosmetic repairs.

As a landlord I want my current and future tenants to respect the valuable asset I have entrusted to them and maintain a good relationship. Fixing the little things is important in a "broken windows theory" way.

AjithAntony··on Most Germans don’t buy their homes, they rent
> If the paint in my personal home starts peeling, my incentive to fix it is higher - I don't want to walk down the hall and see peeling paint.

> If the paint in a corporate-owned tenement starts leaking

LOL. It's the opposite effect. If I own the place, and The paint is peeling, and I have to fix it... then maybe I'll just live with it until it gets worse, or I plan to sell. If it was a rental, then I complain to the landlord to fix.

AjithAntony··on Why eat less meat?
agreed.

> 100 calories of grain we feed animals

100 calories grain we feed animals...

...that humans cannot consume ...that is produced more efficiently than any other crop ...grown on land in climates that is not suitable for "vegetables" ...that makes the most productive use of the land ...that requires few people and simple mechanization to tend

The entire midwest is just a "solar farm" for our diet using vast amounts of land to sequester energy in arbitrary grains that are used as the fuel for the next level.

Might be useful to link this on the front page too. Also, I usually do a "<ctrl-f> rss" to try to find a link when it doesn't show up in Pocketcasts.

well, yes, of course all the space users are using the <tab> key.

AjithAntony··on My Airbnb Nightmare Reality
Yeah, it looks like a pretty modern bathroom and tub. It certainly has an overflow drain.

Edit: Two other notes. 1) The age is irrelevant, even some Victorian-era claw foot tub would have an overflow. 2) I can imagine a scenario where the drain itself is hairclogged at the tailpiece such that it is draining slower than the tub is filling, thus potential overflow.

Edit: From Sharon's video, a trip-level stopper/overflow plate: https://youtu.be/CKuTdZ5T8Ao?t=138

AjithAntony··on Stalking your Facebook friends on Tinder
One could say that there is an expectation that only other tinder users will discover you. Kinda like going to a bar or a strip club, which are activities that your community may disapprove of. Thus, you only encounter members outside of your community, or community members who are cool with it.
AjithAntony··on Vim GIFs
Major reason for me is that I rarely work on a local desktop. Most work happens on remote hosts. A local computer is an SSH term and a web browser. All the tools are remote.

Even in the rare case that I do something local, I prefer to keep using VIM becuase I know it so well and it is super lightweight.

AjithAntony··on How I'm fixing the 401(k)
Yeah, what is the secret sauce that lets them be profitable on only 3bp and provide a fund expense of only 10bp? All the roboadvisors are a 15-25bp wrap and ~16bp funds fees. A 401k provider is naturally more costly since there are compliance issues.

AjithAntony··on ‘Stop using paper checks,’ says agency in charge of them
> The physical check itself – the piece of paper – has to be genuine,

This is wrong, right? There is no such thing as a genuine check outside of conventions for repudiation(out of order check numbers, not on my check paper). Whether it came from the checkbook my bank sent, or out of my printer, it is just as good. Legally, writing it on a napkin would probably work, but draw lots of scrutiny becuase it looks suspicious and can't be processed automatically.

AjithAntony··on ‘Stop using paper checks,’ says agency in charge of them
No actual news, just ACH as it has been for many years. The author was annoyed that credit card companies allow users to pay by "eCheck" without prenote or deposit confirmations.

> The good news is that online ACH fraud is relatively uncommon, just because it’s rare to find an online vendor who will allow you to pay using ACH rails instead of your debit card. The case of paying off a credit-card bill is a unique one, because you can’t use a credit card to pay off a credit card.

AjithAntony··on Chicago Police Dept. Plagued by Systemic Racism, Task Force Finds
I like hackuser's analogy of "Building quality into the process" vs. playing whack-a-bug.

I don't have any idea how to fix the process but here's some stories that we can throw in the backlog:

   - As a homeless individual, I'd like stable shelter
   - As a low income individual, I'd like higher quality housing opportunities
   - As a mentally ill individual, I'd like support and treatment to manage my illness
   - As an unemployed individual, I'd like a job where I can earn enough income to support myself and family
   - As a member of a victimized population, I'd like my peers to refrain from perpetuating a cycle of violence among ourselves
   - As a parent with limited means, I'd like my child to attend a high quality school
   - As a working parent with limited means, I'd like quality child care
   - As an hourly wage-earner, I'd like consistent full time hours so I can better plan my schedule, finances, and future
   - As a working individual, I'd like affordable, reliable, and timely transportation options to travel between my home, work, and school
